Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to check them out. ![]()
we stream using Fubo.tv for local channels and stuff. The Tour de France appears to be on USA Network.
Yup, everyone is right here. If you don’t have an opinion on announcers the Peacock is the easiest. I think this is the year I give up on Peacock. I don’t think I can handle the Phil-isms and romanticizing of the doping era…
What VPN do people use? Love GCN for cross and everything else I watch from them.
I may or may not use surfshark VPN, as it was the cheapest last time I looked. (Alex Dowsett has a code on some of his youtube videos for a few months free on a longer sign up as well.)
Below is for Canada, not USA, so maybe there us hope for US coverage sooner than 5 years. (edited)
FLO has the cyclocross world cups and lifetime gp events… coverage for the GP has been horrendous. Think I’m going to go VPN route for all cycling… maybe. ![]()
Just gonna mention again that Peacock / NBC Sports has always had the international broadcast as an option for the Tour, which is Phil and Bobke free and also commercial-free. Just not certain who the announcers are this year….
But if you like GCN anyway and already have a subscription, then getting a VPN makes sense.
I think I am going to try to international feed first. Thanks for the tip, I didn’t know it was an option!
International feed announcers are Ant McCrossan and Nicholas Roche. I’ll give them a listen.
Yeesh….Ant just doesn’t work for me and Roche was about as dry as Melba toast. I can’t imagine the two of them together.
But I’ll give them a shot and see how it goes.
This link has a listing of times and different shows for Peacock and USA Network coverage:
I watched it live this morning on peacock. After an Offensively long Ad Break Phil Ligget comes up with an Absolute Gem
After Lampaert dethroned Van Art with a time of 15:17, Phil riffs;
We have no pictures of it because we were waiting 15 min Bob, and 17 seconds. Van Art will not believe what he’s seen.
Typically I watch it on replay. Even though I have peacock I stream the Eurosport feed. No ads and better commentary.
It’s the box. I ordered one last year to get Peacock for the TdF but never installed it. We just set up a guest room in our house with a tv and I put it in there and set it up yesterday. It has all the apps but there is no way to reorder or remove unused apps. I have a Chromecast with Google TV on the TVs we use often and it is so much easier to use and customize. The Flex box might be an ok device but the UI is awful. It was worth the $15 to get peacock tv for free though.
He’s a buffoon……it is embarrassing now. During the ‘92 Tour, I heard him say that Atle Kvalsvoll won, placed second and took third at the 92 Tour DuPont.
IN THE SAME SENTENCE!!!
I’ve watched both Peacock and GCN+ broadcasts. IMHO, the GCN+ presentation is head and shoulders above the Peacock version. It’s well worth the additional cost and VPN hassle, especially if you also want to watch the Giro, Vuelta, classics, and other races. Many of their documentaries are also quite good.
GCN is superior to both…but especially the USA coverage. I could accept the Int’l broadcast OK (despite their errors yesterday), but GCN is still the best coverage, IMO. Rotating the announcers throughout the broadcast helps keep things fresher and new insights get brought in as a result.
The global feed, mostly because I prefer KMs to Miles and because there’s a certain commentator on the U.S. feed who … let’s just say, he rubs me the wrong way.
But rather than focus on the negatives of Peacock, I’d rather talk about the things I like about the GCN+ feed. First off, it seems like there are fewer interruptions. Second, I just really like the personalities of many of the presenters and how they interact with each other. Wiggo was never my favorite rider, but I love his excitement when he’s reporting from the back of the bike. I also love “The Breakaway” show that bookends the races. The way that Dan, Orla, Adam, and Robbie banter and take the p__, while also providing interesting insights into the race makes it very entertaining.
I’m a casual watcher, and last year GCN at $25 it was worth the hassle to watch it on my computer. But my preference is an Apple TV app, and Peacock+ International feed is pretty good plus its only $5 for TdF and $5 for Giro. I never ended up taking advantage of the other GCN+ content.
I’m doing peacock this year, it’s just too easy and cheap when I have roku’s on multiple TV’s vs. messing with VPN and streaming from computer with VPN. I tend to watch the international feed, no commercials when you go with the $10/mth option (US feed is only commercial free on replay, not live). I actually like Bob and Phil, just not in their current roles. Phil could maybe be a sidekick to a strong lead or maybe do special segments. Bob is an interesting dude in real life and outside the commentators box, it’s just not a good role for him being a play-by-play man.
I hear you about the hassle of using a VPN with a Roku, “smart” TV, AppleTV, etc. That said, I’ve got a home network setup such that it’s just a quick tap on my phone to switch everything to route through the VPN. Of course, that’s probably not something non-techies will want to bother setting up and maintaining.
As far as presenters go, love or hate Bob and Phil, for me they just don’t hold a candle to breadth and experience of all the ex pros on GCN: Dan Lloyd, Wiggo, Adam Blythe, Robbie McEwen, Rob Hatch, Bernie Eisel, Mat Stephens, and on and on.
