In the last year they discussed on the podcast some of the different probiotics out there while talking about nutrition. Looking for the most potent, but reliable enough to know it is “clean” for competition as that makes it less likely to have hidden chemicals/supplements.
Upon the podcast recommendation i tried these to help relieve some gut discomfort issues on the bike. They made some difference. However I’m not taking them anymore. I figured if they were happy in my gut them they would still be alive after 2 months of seeding.
I take the NOW capsules as well as consume probiotic foods like saurkraut, kimchie, Greek yogurt, etc. Trying to have one small serving (big spoonful) with at least one meal everyday.
Fresh veggies also give your gut something to do and help one feel full.
YES, finding a good probiotic that’s both effective and safe for competition can be tricky. Have you checked out any third-party tested ones? Brands like Seed or Just Thrive seem to have solid reputations.
And keep in mind that if you want probiotics in your gut you also have to eat prebiotics (like fiber) to feed them and keep them happy.
I tried functional medicine approach for a couple of months after struggling with bloating and inconsistent digestion. What convinced me was how they explain the science behind what they’re doing—it wasn’t just buzzwords. I also liked that they offer a way to learn about gut and longevity through their site and newsletters. I noticed better regularity and less post-ride stomach weirdness.
I do both. For me it’s usually a fork full of sauerkraut after my meal.
The guidance I got from the sports dietician I worked with last year was: If you feel like things are okay day to day and you are eating at least one serving of fermented food a day, you can cut the capsules. If you have to go on oral antibiotics, then you should consider adding capsules back until your gut is repopulated.
TLDR if you’re gut is in good shape, capsules aren’t going to add anything, provided you’re taking care of things EVERY day.
