In day to day training, I use Styrkr carb mix. It’s perfect; mixes well, goes down a treat in volumes upto 120g/hr.
I’m looking for something with a lower fructose content for easier workouts, or for the backend of more intense workouts where I’ve ended up front loading my carb requirements.
I’ve tried SiS, OTE and Torq - all mix kinda poorly and leave a thick lining in my mouth/throat or taste horrible. OTE is the best of the bunch I’ve found so far
I’m wondering if anyone else has found something that works well that they can recommend
Making my own drink mixes hands down has been the best nutrition related change I’ve made. It’s wayyy cheaper, like not even close, and I can experiment with different ratios, grams per serving, and flavors.
I use Cameron Jones’s (NZ gravel / mtb racer that won Unbound this year who also loves a 200g carb intake https://www.instagram.com/p/DK0xk5wRLps/) formula of 1tsp baking soda, 1/3 cup Maltodextrin and a pack of Raro (NZ) which from a quick google is available in the UK. Lots of flavours to choose from (just need to ensure they have sodium citrate #331) Raro - New Zealand
I’ve had good luck with squeezy basic and sponser long energy both low fructose having lighter tasting and mix cleanly. If you want flexibility Infinit nutrition lets you custom blend carb ratios to dial sweetness down.
Well I had considered this, but my thought process was that if it’s so easy to create something that mixes well, tastes good and doesn’t leave a film in my mouth/throat, I’d have found something besides styrkr that can achieve all three by now.
Or maybe it’s just down to choice of ingredients and flavourings. Is there a resource somewhere that explores all this?
Neversecond (gels and C30/C90 drink mix) is 2:1 and is the first product that has given me no issues both during an event and the day(s) after an event. I used to use Maurten which worked great during an event but the gut rot afterwards was bad. I got through 11 hours of Leadville this year at about 100g/hour with Neversecond and felt great afterwards.
Neversecond is too expensive to train with all year so I started looking for cheaper premade options before going down the mix your own route. I discovered The Feed sells their own 2:1 high carb drink mix for only $20 for a fairly large bag. I know they ship to the UK but maybe the shipping doesn’t make that economical for you.
It just arrived yesterday for me. I’ll report back on how it worked.
The thread that @Pbase linked is a good resource. HERE is a general recipe I follow, but typically play around with different flavors. It mixes really well and never have any issues with it not mixing well.
I can’t really speak for the filmy feeling in mouth and throat. Maybe using a bit more water to dilute it could help? I do think that sort of thing just comes with the territory of slugging back a highly concentrated dose of carbs.
