As the title says, I am tired of paying through the nose for what is essentially Maltodextrin, fructose and salt mixed in a 2:1 or 1:0.08 ratio and have decided to go down the route of making my own.
Other Aussie folks who are already doing this, where do you get your powders from? I’ve been combing the internet for the best deals that also don’t feel like I’m going to get poisoned or my identity stolen. What I’ve been running into is either that the powders don’t actually work out that much cheaper than just buying a mix, or I’ll find great deals on the powder, but the shipping costs more than the actual product.
As I’m just dipping my toe in, I’m not ready to buy 5 kg+ at a time yet. Any tips on where to look?
Me too, for maltodextrin and I bought fructose from a health food shop in a local shopping centre (wasn’t very cheap). Even finding Gatorade is a pain now, Coles and Woolies seem to have stopped stocking it. But I tend to just use sugar and a bit of flavouring now. FWIW I recently tried the Pure Nutrition race fuel and for me it’s much easier to tolerate than any of the DIY mixes. Just a shame it’s so bloody expensive. I use it on race days only.
Woolies table sugar. Sodium citrate from eBay. Some soda stream flavouring (sugar free Sunkist or solo are my fav) syrup from woolies.
Combined with the “saturday: pro fuel & hydration” app for mixing quantities.
Even with the small subscription fee for the app it’s still the cheapest way I could find to do it here in Aus.
Simple, tastes good, I don’t eat everything in the house after getting off the bike anymore.
