Got a link to export of my data. Once I’ve got to my PC to grab MY data; it’s going to be deleted from Strava together with my account.
Kind of par for the course at this point it seems. They’re just doing things to do it without really fixing the underlying issues users want to see fixed.
I think I’m slowly starting to understand what Strava are trying to stop now - and I think it is something that is worth them trying to control - but their communication is terrible ![]()
So, for example, in the case of me, Strava and TrainerRoad…
I set it so only my followers can see my Strava activities but I also share those activities with TrainerRoad.
Currently, unless I also set my TrainerRoad account to private (which I do), all those Strava rides that I have tried to hide become visible to all other TrainerRoad users. Essentially providing a window into Strava that I may forget about in the future.
I actually think that is something they might legitimately feel like that should try to stop.
Edit: Apologies to TR if the above isn’t the case - I haven’t actually checked - but can imagine it being true on other platforms if not TR…
Strava has always had poor business people and poor developers (bugs that last for years). They’ve wanted to monetize this into a billion dollar company but don’t have a magic revenue generating formula. The premium features they build only appeal to a small number of athletes. Most riders just want the kudos and to see that they rode more miles than their friends.
Strava would have been a great medium sized business with tens of millions of revenue but they got private equity goons who want a billion dollar pay day.
Strava took away features and people still didn’t sign up. They just got annoyed.
This latest change looks like they were or are going to try to extract license fees for being the hub - Apple, Garmin, and Wahoo can contribute to their bottom line Now, they have backpedaled a bit with the > 10,000. We’ll see if it works.
This year I set the majority of my rides to Private and stopped playing the Kudos game.
Now with its latest anti-consumer move I hit the cancel button. Garmin - TR - TP are the main platforms I use. No reason to have another annual fee for an app that isn’t useful.
How long did it take for them to send it? I’ve been waiting since shortly after this all started. That’s not too long, but I saw someone also say it only took a few hours.
Few hours for me.
Anyone “LEFT ON” Strava seems more appropriate ![]()
I continue to get likes on this post and I now need to caveat that it’s certainly doing its best to NOT be the data broker that we all love it to be.
I’ve also been waiting since yesterday, and still no link. I have over 4,500 activities in there, but I can’t imagine that would make a difference. Could just be flooded with requests I suppose.
Yep, saw that message too when I checked this am.
I first requested mine a couple of weeks ago, before this all kicked off, and they never sent me the link for that request…
After waiting a long time I requested it again and this time was sent the link pronto, within 15 mins I think.
I received my data export request after a few hours I believe. I requested it a few days ago, not because I’m leaving Strava, but because I was curious what the CSV looked like of all my rides. I’ve kept a manual Excel spreadsheet for over 15 years now and keeping up with it gets time consuming and a bit annoying, but I love having all the data. Would really like to automate something that’s a bit easier to keep up with but is not housed on someone’s servers that could get hacked/shut down/etc. I realize the chance of losing data is very minimal, but I don’t like putting data I hold dear in the sole hands of others.
One odd thing I noticed is that my CSV export doesn’t include any of my manual-entry rides that I added to Strava from years ago. Has anyone else noticed this?
As noted on the API thread, I cancelled my Premium subscription today and asked for a refund on any remaining months.
TBD if I delete my whole account…definitely a possibility.
Just got my refund after a week. I am seriously thinking about deleting the account. They still get my rides “for free.”
I am there at least till July 2025 when my annual sub ends.
Not a social thing or because of analyticals or segments and koms. Just like to see the year totals and create a route from time to time but I guess I can really get without it. ![]()
I’ve had Strava since 2013 and have never paid them a penny. I’ve done a few of their free trials of Premium and never felt remotely enticed to pay for it, which kind of says a lot about their product IMO. The route creation tool interested me the most, but I was really underwhelmed and even annoyed at times with its functionality. I enjoy the social aspect and seeing friend’s rides, browsing segments, etc. Until they put some of those core functions behind a paywall, I will never have a reason to give them any money. That being said, I’m quite happy with the free product I’ve received for many years ![]()
Strava deleted my soft spot for the route-making, social data hub it was. In response i deleted my account. Don’t know if i will miss it… As a garmin owner (fenix+ edge) who’s winter go-to’s are Zwift and Trainerroad, i’ll probably only miss the routes parts during the summer. There are alternatives for that. But the whole thing is a pretty shittie for anyone who’s using strava relaint tech or platforms. At the least Strava could provide a paid option for being the data hub.
