Anybody switch from zwift to training peaks virtual?

if you switched from zwift to tpv, how has the transition been? I’ve spent way too much time evaluating and playing around with the various platforms, rouvy, mywhoosh, tpv, zwift.

do you miss a lot of zwift features? as much as I THINK the social features would be a motivator, it’s never really stuck with me on zwift. I don’t race much but would like to start including it 1-2 times a month but I am not sure if that is enough to go with zwift. and with tpv I know I can quickly create private races with bots and race against them as I don’t really care if it’s bots or humans..

anybody use both? maybe that’s what I can do. I have training peaks premium paid through november. and I could just pay for zwift during that same period and keep using both and see what sticks.

honestly, the social part is why I am leaning toward more TPv usage for the rest of the winter. I don’t want to be in a workout and have an acquiantance that I passed try to strike up a conversation with me in the app.

TPv is still a bit rough around the edges in some aspects, and the amount of routes is less than stellar, but it has been getting frequent updates. Another feature I like is that they do allow gpx course uploads for race recon/simulation, and it feels more real-world in terms of physics vs zwift is much more gamified.

Still using zwift becuase upgrading bikes is my closet addiction. But since I already have a TP subscription, it’s a no brainer for me at this point

It’s definitely nice that TPV has pretty frequent updates. I know they’ve sharpened up a few of the routes with with some extra scenery.

TPV is great for doing workouts and not having my eyeballs assaulted. The social stuff on Zwift is cool but it just isn’t where I’m at right now riding.

I always think I’ll make use of the Zwift social features but I don’t really. And group rides are okay but I usually do those on weekends if at all and TPV usually has enough of those on weekends.

I switched over because I didn’t see any reason to pay for both TrainingPeaks and Zwift when I could get TPV for free.

Not having TR workouts auto sync is a bit of a pain, but I just use my Garmin head unit and make it think I’m doing an outdoor ride.

Racing is a bit lacking in real humans to race against, but I don’t really mind as I’m only doing races occasionally as an excuse to do an all out effort to where I’m at.

As someone else said, uploading GPX files is nice and a good way to ride a TT course to get a feeling for it.

I tried when it was first released free for paying TP members, but it’s just too static. Maybe they’ve added some scenery since then. Felt like I rode the same route every time. Also, I admit I find leveling up, badges, upgrades, etc in Zwift motivating. Plus I like the direct integration to TR.

The direct integration of TR into Zwift is definitely a factor. I have found with WiFi on my kickr bike it makes setup a bit better since I can connect TPV to kickr via WiFi and Trainerroad via Bluetooth. But direct integration is a nice things with Zwift.

I do agree leveling up can be a a carrot. I can still focus on structure training and have the motivation of different challenges or just checking off routes.

TPV has sharpened up some of the route scenery but they still have a long way to go on that. That semi-realistic world is slightly odd. You’ve got Rouvy with real world video and more cartoon like Zwift so too is in that middle area. One thing I don’t like in TPV, which is picky, is the roads. This darker grey chipseal look. I don’t know why that bothers me

I’ve paid for training peaks for a long time and every year you can usually get discount codes to get it around $100. But if I dropped that I’d probably switch h to intervals.icu and pay $48 a year.

I also don’t race much and would only use it to occasionally get myself out of my comfort zone and push myself hard

Try out MyWhoosh. It’s free and nearly as good as Zwift. I recently started using it and for a free platform it’s absolutely fantastic

If you go this route, know that MyWhoosh is heavily backed by the government of the UAE. You can decide if you’re ok with that or not, just an fyi.

They have good graphics, but I generally don’t like the routes as they are super flat or super mtn climbs. Not a ton of users either. It’s my last choice behind TPV and swift. Good price though

Yeah. That’s a debate I’ve had with myself. The whole sportswashing thing and whether it backfires be drawing more attention to UAE’s poor human rights record.

I’ve tried MyWhoosh a few times and do like the graphics and some of the routes. The MyWhoosh World Article Trail is visually cool

Here my take:

Tpv is the superior training app. It has every metric you could want and allows you to do workouts in erg, slope and TERRAIN mode. That something zwift cant do and it a bit more real than the other two modes. nice to switch between modes during a WO too. Unfortunately racing is not yet well attended on tpv, although a few events are gaining traction (alkin series is great), making your own route from a gpx is cool, but unless its in a race, it gets kinda boring as the scenery is generic.

Zwift -rad for racing and group ride, decent for training. Solid amount or routes and worlds to ride in

My whoosh. Great graphics. Lots of worlds, but limited roads in each world Also terrain seems either flat or mountains, limited other riders. Sketch funding country. I may use it once a month for an endurance ride.

Rouvy. Cool to sight see, but cant make turns or anything, so better be happy with the route yoi choose. Downhills SUCK as your trainer spins out and you basically are just sitting on a bike coasting down the hills.

Nice summary.

One thing I just discovered with Zwift is that you can convert a GPX file into a Zwift workout using whatsonzwift.com.

Obviously not quite the same as creating a route that you can ride as you wish, but to try it I plugged in a route I rode, selected the particular IF that I wanted to complete the ‘route’ at and it spat out a workout following the profile of the route with appropriately harder efforts for the climbs, easier efforts on the descents etc.

That’s a nice feature

Kinda bound to Zwift here. I like MyWhoosh also but I really like the nice Zwift integration. Also have a Zwift ride so virtual shifting just works on Zwift without any extra. So if I also want to do workouts in non erg mode it’s just easier staying on Zwift.

That makes sense. I have my TP premium with TPV paid through Nov. And may then keep Zwift during that time and evaluate both. The TR Zwift integration is a big bonus
