Any Reason to not just do all workouts as outside workouts on Zwift?

I know lot’s of people on here like Erg mode but I have never had a coach who didn’t prefer me doing intervals on a bike computer in simulation mode on Zwift for consistency between inside and outside workouts. I was wondering if anybody does this? Presumably one can always just switch the workout in TR to outside, then run and record the workout on the bike computer with your PM/HR connected to that while riding any route in Zwift with the trainer controlled by Zwift simulation mode?

Any reason not to do that? Anything I’d lose?

I’ve taken it one step further and done workouts (usually longer intervals, sweet spot type) on rolling terrain on other apps like Zwift. It teaches you to keep the power steady over terrain you’ll find outside by shifting gears, changing cadence etc. I’d say it’s taking the game to the highest difficulty level, maybe except outside :+1:

That’s exactly what I am suggesting. Keeps things interesting and is a closer simulation of outside workouts. It also makes the data more consistent between the two options if the weather surprises you and you just want to jump outside (the workout is already yon your garmin anyway). For short intervals/sprint workouts I’d still use something like Tempus Fugit.

The only issues I can think of are…

  1. Sometimes the “outside” versions of workouts is quite different.
  2. I dont think that “outside” rides are as closley integrated with PL levels - I think you will be credited with a pass regardless of how well you did for instance. Could be wrong.

Great plan then! I’ve taken it to the next level which is cutting out one of the programs, but I won’t suggest that here

That’s what I often try to do except my training app is JOIN and I ride in Rouvy (for as long as my trial lasts at least). It makes workouts a lot more engaging and less boring. But I have 1 big annoyance, it causes duplicate rides everywhere which I need to manually remove

This is interesting! So are you saying that the entire ride including power is recorded on your Garmin for example and not in zwift? ( the only workout you want to keep is the one you recorded outside of zwift) For this to work you have power pedals on the bike I presume?

They are recorded on both, hence the duplication. Any smart trainer could serve as a power source

ah ok so the same power meter (smart trainer) feeding both apps, I get ya, thanks

You probably need ant for that but dongles aren’t expensive

works well for basic workouts, ie 20min at SS, 30/30s or just prolonged z2. The workouts that constantly move from 180-190-195-180-200 are the ones that youll never get right outside, nor should you really try

I currently do this exact thing and the only hiccup I experimented is duplicate rides being uploaded to
Strava . The work around I use is once I finish the ride in Zwift and upload to Strava , I then finish the ride on my bike computer which uploads to Strava, garmin and TR . I then delete the Indoor ride from Strava. And only the Zwift ride shows up on Strava .
