Airpods Pro 3 Heart Rate - TR Support?

Quick search doesn’t seem to indicate that Apple have made it possible for them to make it work. Still only talks to their devices. They’d have to open that up to let TR make it work.

When you work out with AirPods Pro 3, you can share heart rate data with Apple and third-party fitness apps on your iPhone

This seems to say it could work, but TR would have to prompt us for permission.

Ah ok that seems like maybe they could get it working for someone using the TR ios app then for a workout.

Just wondering if there is an update to this.

Bought Pro 3 today and surprised to see they are not supported yet.

I imagine with Christmas just around the corner a few more TR users will soon be wondering what the development timeline looks like.

I reached out via email support and this was the response:

Thanks for reaching out to the TrainerRoad Support Team about this. I’m happy to help out here!

At this time, we don’t have a way to support any Apple devices for HR readings while performing a TR workout directly. As they don’t connect with an open Bluetooth standard, but a proprietary Apple connection, this may not be a feature we can implement from here. Sorry about that!

While cumbersome due to the requirements, there are third party apps that act as a bridge in these cases to transmit these HR readings via an open Bluetooth standard. With that said, the setup itself may require multiple devices and may be difficult to troubleshoot for various reasons.

I’ve also made sure to pass along a feature request to my team to further review our options here! Please let us know if there is anything else we can help with in the future.

Best wishes,

I don’t think this is quite right though. It’s true that trainerroad cannot directly connect with the airpods pro 3 because of apple’s proprietary protocol, but that’s intentionally so. The way it can work is that trainerroad has to request user permissions to read the live HR data from Apple’s HealthKit framework by calling this API: heartRate | Apple Developer Documentation.

Now that the new Trainerroad AI is out, I figured now is a good time to bump this feature request  Please make this happen in 2026.

Monthly bump!

In some of the recent podcasts they’ve mentioned wanting to bring in HealthKit data to support their AI model.

I’d imagine that’s a fairly large project and I don’t see them getting Airpods Heartrate from Healthkit as a separate thing before that.

I’m not hopefully they’ll have heartrate from APP3 anytime soon, but it would be great if they proved me wrong.

I would also love this. Not having to deal with (including find) my chest-based HRM on the trainer reduces pre-ride faff for both trainer and outdoor rides. It’d be a small, but lovely, quality of life improvement.

I’d be surprised if Apple lets anyone touch it, they won’t even let their own apps touch it, i.e. I get no logged data in Apple Health despite using APP3s 6-8 hours a day.

Only time I get HR data is when Fitness+ videos are playing, which…I cancelled my free trial before it even ended because it’s impossible to follow.

The whole concept of APP HR integration seems half baked at best.

Apple allows it. Trainerroad just needs to implement the APIs.
