7mesh bib shorts?

Background:
Over the last few months I’ve dropped from 172lbs to 161lbs (and probably a few more to go). I am relatively short at 5’6".
I’ve worn large in assos equipe and rapha pro team.

My experience:
On 7mesh’s sizing chart I am between small and medium for thighs and hips; and between medium and large for waist.

Clare recommended small, but I doubted her and ordered medium instead (thinking there’s no way I could be a small if I wear large in other brands). They seemed comfortable, but (as some others have experienced) there was slightly too much bunching/wrinkling of the material around the back of my thighs and around the inner knee area.

Exchanged for small. They are a bit more snug; I would call it comfortably compressive, and have reduced (but not eliminated) bunching/wrinkling. Bunching/wrinkling only appear to be an issue when off the bike.

Trust their sizing advice!

I would also echo another poster’s observation about the snugness around your package. It seems to be ok/better once you’re in position on the bike.

I’m looking forward to trying these out on the bike soon.

Thanks @tj7mesh!

@tj7mesh

I just received my bibs! I did a quick try and the size seems to fit! I ordered Medium, 180lbs, 5’11". I have yet to go on a bike ride an try them but they seem LEGIT! I really like the material and the way the stitching (or lack of ) around the chamois is done.

I can’t wait to try them. I will come back and give you all a report!

Thanks for the promo offer! Could you leave the coupon activated until size XS is back in stock?

Really want to try these and compare them to Rapha Pro Team and Castelli Free Aero bibs!

I should have done the Med. Need to do a return. I’m same height and 2lbs less, small was just too small despite measurements aligning.

@rnsnbrnk I’ll remember you have a rain check, just contact me through our site if you need help

@RONDAL did you get sorted through our service chat? If not ping us there and we’ll make sure it happens. (Or DM me here but I might be a bit slower to get back to you…sorry haven’t been on here for a bit!)

@tj7mesh claire and i got sorted out, sent stuff off on Friday should have arrived with your warehouse yesterday. Hopefully set of mediums on the way soon! So that i can sit inside on the trainer and watch the snow come down…

Okay, I promised I was going to do a full review of the bibs after I had a chance to use them… so here it is.

Disclosure: I am not by any means compensated by 7Mesh other than the discount given earlier on this post. This post is MY opinion on the bibs and can only reflect that… my opinion.

Overall, I am impressed. I have experience with ASSOS, Rapha, Castelli and Pearl iZumi bibs. The 7Mesh bibs are different than every other bib I have ever tried. I think the main difference is the “floating” Chamois which is a pretty cool feature but definitely takes some time to get used to it. As others have mentioned, when you stand, the chamois will ride up and give you kind of a wedgie. That said, once you are on the bike, you can see the difference, since there are no seams and it just falls right into place under your sit bones.

PRODUCT: 7Mesh MK3 Bib Short Medium

SIZING:
The sizing according to 7Mesh is a bit different to the usual sizing for bibs. They do run a bit large. I am 5’11" and about 180lbs (trying to get it down). I am usually a Medium in other brands (Assos, Rapha) and probably large on Castelli.
My tights are 23.5" so according to the 7MESH sizing guide I was right between Small and Medium. I chose to go with Medium and I was happy with my selection.

FIT:
The legs are race tight about 1.5/2 inches above the knee. The straps are somewhat loose which is very comfortable but gave me hesitation that the chamois would move around. The waist is tight which prevents any movement of the chamois. The groin area is significantly tighter than other bibs. In fact, this is the number one reason I was glad I got the medium instead of the small. This is specially true when I ride on the drops and my body is more aero… lots of pressure in the package.

FABRIC:
I am very impressed with the choice of materials. The fabric is NOT transparent and very smooth. My girlfriend noticed that it was a new bib which should say something. She said, it made me look “slimmer but full legs”… not sure what to make from that, except she liked them.
The elastic straps are very flexible and like I said, they do not provide lots of pressure on the shoulders. That might have to do with my sizing choice.
The logo is printed on the right leg and seems very good quality. Hard to tell if it will wear out after a couple of seasons of use. Seems a bit reflective, but will not provide any safety feature by any means. This is the only marking on the exterior of the bib, so if you are into the Black black bibs… this is one of those.
The leg grippers are also printed directly on to the Fabric. They are blue and really good looking. The fit is tight so the grippers worked as expected.

CHAMOIS:
Probably one of the most critical parts of any bib, this is at par with the best of the best. The padding is medium, with more padding where it needs it (under your sit bones). There are no stitches anywhere near the chamois which means for no friction rubs where you are used to or expect. This does means that there are stitches on other locations of the bib which might mean you have to get use to those areas. That said, these areas are not nearly at the same pressure (not your sitting area).

EXPERIENCE:
I have used these bibs on three rides. One ride was indoor and the other two were outside.
Indoor: Workout on TR: Dade. 1hr. This was my first experience with the bibs and I was impressed. The fact that there is less compliance indoor and the floating bib worked out really well. I liked that I felt “fresh” after a tough workout.
Outdoor 1: Workout from TR: Baird +6. 1.5hrs. Going outside for a longer ride is where my experience with the bibs change a bit. Doing hard workouts outside meant I spent more time on the drops and I started feeling a bit uncomfortable with the pressure on my groin. I found myself trying to reposition the package to relieve some of the pressure (specially on the second endurance half of the workout). This was by no means a showstopper but it did point out that these are not the bibs I would pick for a Century ride. These are more for my crits and races (due to the tight fit).
Outdoor 2: A recovery ride in Z2. 1.5hrs. I found these bibs way more comfortable than my previous ride. Maybe I got used to them, maybe the workout wasn’t as hard and therefore I felt more at ease.

PRICE:
These are great bibs from a smaller shop that is batting with the big boys. The price is in part with the deluxe bibs out there and it meets the expectations. Hopefully as they get more establish in the market, their price can come down a bit and compete better. I would probably but another pair once this one has more miles and only if I find a discount.

SUMMARY:
Overall this is a great bib, in par with my Assos and Rapha bibs. The fit is a bit too tight for me (specially groin) so these are not going to be my choice for endurance rides (Century and Grand Fondos). I will definitely use these for indoor training and 1hr rides.
The floating chamois is their big differentiator which is the main reason it can compete with Assos (who also has no stitches on the sitting area). Fabric is good quality. Fit is a bit tricky but they do offer a good chat feature to discuss your measurements with their experts. Price is a bit steep and hopefully can come down as they start shipping more units.
I would recommend this bib for people looking for a high quality bib and would like to splurge on looks and new features. I would also recommend this to anybody having saddle sores due to stitching on their current bibs.

Good review, I think you nailed my experience as with them as well.

Based on this thread, I ordered a S and M in the Cargo bib. My measurements (@ 5’ 11" and 151 lbs) had me definitely in a small, but read about the crotch issues.

Highs: Super high quality material, comfortable straps, beautiful looking, and pockets! Seriously, leg pockets are super functional! Fantastic leg grippers and fit in legs.

Lows: Folks are not kidding about crotch tightness. I had interpreted it as more up front, but for me it felt like rubber bands stretched over my junk to my undercarriage. And they are super hot.

I wanted to love these but I couldn’t finish Baxter with these on in the drops. Even in medium. The discomfort became unbearable quickly. Tried on an outdoor ride as well. Made it 2 hours, but again, my undercarriage felt like I had left a tight rubberband on too long.

I know bibs are personal and there is so much to like about these. I don’t want to discourage people from trying them, they may work for you, but just so not for me. Back to the drawing board.

Got a chance to test these on an outdoor ride today (66km/2.25hrs)

I would agree with @alvaroe16 assessment almost exactly. The only difference for me was that, although I also felt the tightness in the groin area, it was not an issue for me once on the bike.

5’6". 160lbs. Size SM

These are on the pricey side, but I would not hesitate to recommend them to someone in the market for a high end/high quality set of bibs (comparable to assos and rapha)

@alvaroe16 Thanks for the comprehensive review, much appreciated!

@llmonty Thanks for the review, appreciate you adding your thoughts even if the MKs don’t work for you. Sorry about that. I am sharing all feedback from here with our whole team, I’m pretty sure your comments are going to cause quite a stir! You’re right that each person is different, and your experience highlights the difficulty of finding a design that will work for the wide variety of people and shapes out there. I’m going to post something below that might be interesting and I’ll ping you a DM.

@geebutbut Thanks for the review and recommendation also!

MK3 is our flagship and one of our top products, but anyone concerned about groin tightness might be interested in our RK1. We did something quite different with it, and created a customized Elastic Interface Force chamois where the foam tapers down to nothing then disappears in the middle - again with no stitching that can cause chafing - this leaves two ‘wings’ of foam on either side while having no foam padding at all on the modesty panel - cooler, airy-er, less compressive, roomy feeling, more sheer.

Awesome! Any idea when you expect the XS RK1 back in stock?

I grabbed a synergy jersey and a pair of mk3 bibs a few weeks back.
The bibs…well that is going to make for a great story when they finally get back to 7mesh for return. Due to COVID and Canada Post they’ve been all over the place, including being quarantined in a Shaw warehouse for 10 days.

The synergy jersey though; AMAZING
if you had to buy one jersey or pack one jersey to take anywhere this would be it. I’ve been using it in 5C to 19C weather here so far, dry and even some spotted rain and wet roads. It keeps you warm enough and blocks wind/road spray, but it vents heat perfectly. I also love the pulls on the zips, why other jersey/jacket makers cant put these on is beyond me, but it makes it super easy to unzip slightly on climbs if you want to vent some heat.
I’ve been putting just a rapha sleeveless base layer on so far and its been great. From Zone 2 rides to tempo session and even some smash fests, this thing is great. And unlike other manufacturers they come in colors so you can be seen. Two thumbs way up for that piece of kit. Serious quality.

@rnsnbrnk are you in the US? Fresh stock arriving as we type, we’re trying to get them available to order by Friday if possible! (Covid making things unpredictable - if you’re on our mailing list we have an RK1 email ready to go and are waiting to hit ‘send’ as soon as they’re in.)

@RONDAL thanks for the feedback! posted and shared internally. I’m probably the biggest Synergy fan on our crew so I shared with great pride, ha! I also use it with just a sleeveless base most of the time, it’s my go-to for cool weather.

It’s really neat you said if you had to buy only one to take anywhere… When we formed 7mesh we developed our first line around a concept I proposed called 10 Great Things - if you were going to travel the world riding for a year, however you wanted, and could only take 10 pieces of apparel with you - what would they be? It’s a fun discussion - everyone agrees on the first 5 or 6 and after that it’s all over the place.

PS I’ll ask Clare for the MK3 story that does sound like a good one…

Edit: Just received my bibs and thought I’d give guidance for anyone else looking to purchase. First off - quality is great. Finish is easily in line with other high end products. I’m 5’11" - 157lbs. Generally wear Large in Assos. My measurements for thigh, waist and hip were all spot on for Small, but I could barely get them over my butt. Straps felt great once they were on, but compression around waist and nether region was super constricting. Hoping to return for a Medium which will likely suit me better.

I almost pulled the trigger on some 7mesh last year but hesitated at the price. I’ve found something that really works for me with Assos and although they’re also pricey, I know they work.

Thanks to this discount I just put my order in - thank you!!

I’m 5’11" and 157lbs. Based on the size guide, I’m a dead ringer for Small, which surprises me as I typically do Large in Assos. I’ll report back with how they work.

Thanks again to 7mesh for all the info and discount code in this thread, I’d love to support a smaller Canadian Company

Great! I’m in Europe, so assume I need to have a bit more patience. Currently checking stock levels couple times a week!

ME: I am not spending any more money during this quarantine.

ME: Ohh that is so tempting… I need a long sleeve jersey… Now I want one. But i just spent some money on 7mesh bibs and new wheels.

You won’t be disappointed. the other nice thing about it is unlike other jackets that are bulky and certainly can become a bit of a sail in the wind, the fit on the synergy is great. I spent most of yesterday pushing headwind and unlike my rapha pro-team that while similar likes to grab the wind, the synergy was far more aero.

Wish I’d seen this before I bought mine a while ago, I’m 5’8", 160lbs and bought Med. Based upon the chart small would have been better. I find the chamois bulky, I’m assuming this would be less of a problem with the smaller size.
Otherwise, I like the quality and feel of the fabric, just don’t like the bulk.

Thanks for the discount. Just received the RK1! First impression is impressive, soft/smooth fabric. Comfortable straps. Nice tight fit. Normally I wear S in other brands (like Rapha, ASSOS), good that I sized down to a XS. Thanks to the chat with helping to choose to correct size.

Will try them on the bike ASAP.
