2x8 FTP Test Problem

I did a 2x8 FTP test with the ERG turned off. All was going well in the warmup until I hit the first 8min section. I had issues with my Wahoo Kicker Core not having enough resistance. Was in my 52x12, spinning at 127RPM, my power only at 214 and event turned up the effort up to 122%.

Should I be setting my resistance to Regular?

You can adjust the baseline resistance to ensure that the gear range on your bike is in the right spot to get you what you need for all of your workouts. I pulled the below info from our Help Center article on smart trainer modes:

Resistance Mode

This mode mimics the functionality of a magnetic trainer with a linear power curve. This mode includes a variable resistance setting that can be electronically adjusted.

Tips using Resistance Mode:

Changing Gears

When using resistance mode, you’ll need to change gears as you typically would while riding outdoors. To reduce wear on your trainer, try to select your gearing that limits cross chain as much as possible. This will also keep you riding as quietly as possible indoors.

Finding the right Resistance Percentage

You may find that the “default” resistance percentage of 50% that many trainers default to is far too high to actually train at based on your gearing - it might be impossible to turn the pedals. If you plan on using Resistance modes, we highly recommend finding the right Resistance mode percentage before starting your workout.

If you use the TrainerRoad desktop app, you can use the left and right arrow keys to adjust the Resistance mid-workout.

What gear combination & power did you do your warmup in? This will help with providing advice.

For example (very fictitious), if you did your warmup at 100watts in 52x13 at 90 RPM, and then tried to do an FTP test you would spin-out as you are almost in your biggest gear already with nowhere to go except upping the cadence to increase power.
