My lbs built one up with 105. 52cm frame. 19+ pounds!
8 years ago I purchased a 2014 AL Jamis Ventura Race with tiagra for $1100. Few years I ago I updated to 105 primarily for the shifting cable that didnāt route out the side of the shifters. The 105 was used off of eBay so cheap. Still one of my favorite bikes to ride. I donāt really road race so itās just for training and fun.
Feb of 2020 - i was looking at the Allex Sprint. But then got a Cervelo R2 for $1600ā¦I feel good about paying bargain basement price.
Those whinging about āheavyā AL bikes with āmeaslyā 105 tend to forget that the local crits are regularly won by kids on their hand-me-down bikes, running Shimano Sora or Tiagra. ![]()
Haha right? Itās not a climbing bike, three pounds means nothing in a crit.
Three pounds has very little meaning in any type of race minus a super steep Hill Climb.
The race specific bike is silly when considering amateur racing or riding.

Even on a hill 3 pounds isnāt much if your body weighs 175 pounds.
I think it more has to do with the cost and those features of weight and 105.
I feel attacked! But what if Iām 6ā2ā? ![]()
Iād bet on college kids on hand me downs fighting for beer primes every day of the week over someone on a 10k bike.
Flicked through the bikes at my local (In the UK https://www.sigmasports.com/) and the price seems in line with other big brands, a lot has changed in the last couple of years. Sure, I feel smug with my 2019 bike purchase at 2019 prices but they are not coming back anytime soon.
For carbon with 105 and racey geo, I can still go direct to Canyon for a few less ££ or spend a little more for bikes like the Cannondale super six evo.
Frameset is more tempting, especially if youāre the sort of person with a healthy spares box.
The frameset is more expensive than a carbon ribble endurance SLR frame, and double the price of their alu options. You can buy a complete Alu race bike with ultegra from Decathlon (Van Rysel EDR AF) for less than this frame too.
And nearly 50% more than the Trek Emonda ALR frameset.
The frameset is worse value than the 105 bike if anything, the insane markup is on the frame itself.
Tried to only glance at race framesets, not endurance. If adding ribble, may as well include Planet-X for half the price carbon options.
It depends what value you place on the marketing material of how aero this is, how much you like the aethetics of hidden cables or the colour choices, even how much you preference a BSA BB and then how it actually rides. Chances are the Trek will drop at a higher RRP on the next iteration.
Trek Emonda ALR frameset 2021 £1,150
Allez Sprint 2022 £1,599
It doesnāt make financial sense but Iād consider paying the extra Ā£449 just to have a BSA BB over the Trek
Itās a shame cannondale stopped selling framesets for the CAAD.
I would not pay for the weight.
I will pay for: geometry. Stiffness. Features like common parts, standard or threaded bb etc.
Al frames tend to be very stiff but a lot of them have relaxed geometry. A bad combination for the potential buyer.
But an al bike with racing geometry will beat the hell out of many racing(!) carbons.
This.
If the weight difference is 15 lbs, yes weight is important. 2-3 lbs? All in your head. This coming from a guy who has Dura Ace on everything - but hey I just love it, so Iāll change that to āAll in my headā ![]()
Geometry is vastly undervalued as is the ability to avoid proprietary parts.
Is that true though? If it was, why donāt they use it on all their cheaper alloy bikes and not just on their most expensive, performance oriented one? And I imagine the ease of the welds would be offset by the cost and time to hydroform all the complicated tube shapes.
It doesnāt make any sense at all to skip the Emonda. BSA is not superior, BB beatrng replacements are years apart and the cost to have a shop do it is minimal if you donāt want to make a press tool. You need almost the same tools to get your bearings in and out of a BSA BB anyway, youāre just adding an extra step.
But anyway, confusingly Ribbleās race geometry bikes are called Endurance SL / SLR, as ridden in the pro peloton.
Iām shocked Trek hasnāt had a 50% increase on the bike since the announcement of the new Allez.
Dont forget, we still in in the 1st quarter of the yearā¦

You got to hand it to the Specialized marketing department that they can sell an aluminum race bike for 50% more money than Trek can.
