Every rider at the Leadville Trail 100 MTB is chasing a belt buckle. The big buckle is the one you dream about. The little buckle, the finisher’s buckle, means you beat the clock. In 2026 both the course and the buckle times changed, so we wanted to know what it really takes to earn each one.

The race was rerouted around the Willow Fire burn area. The new course is shorter and climbs almost 2,000 feet less, and the cutoffs tightened to match. The big buckle moved from 9 hours to 8 hours and 15 minutes. The finisher buckle moved from 12 hours to 11 hours and 15 minutes. So which is harder, the old course on the old clock or the new course on the tighter one? We built race-pace plans in Best Bike Split for every version and checked our own data to see how many riders are strong enough to hit each mark.

Why We Measure This in Watts Per Kilogram

Leadville has always been a climbing race. Columbine, Powerline, and Sugarloaf built that reputation, and on a climb what counts is your power divided by your weight. The 2026 course is easier, but Columbine still anchors the day, so climbing power still decides most of your race. Two riders with the same FTP finish far apart if one is carrying ten extra kilograms up that climb. So we put every target in watts per kilogram, the same way TrainerRoad’s AI measures your FTP.

One more thing to plan for. The FTP you hold at sea level is not the FTP you get in Leadville. Even a well-acclimatized rider loses about 10 percent of their sustainable power at the race’s altitude, and a rider who flies in cold loses closer to 15. Both buckle cutoffs are 45 minutes tighter in 2026, and yet both got easier to earn. The reroute cut more climbing than it cut time. For an acclimatized rider, the big buckle dropped from about 3.7 to 3.4 W/kg, and the little buckle from 3.1 to 2.9.

How Many Riders Are Strong Enough?

We looked at TrainerRoad riders whose FTP was set the same consistent way, by our AI detecting it from real rides, and counted how many clear each bar. These numbers assume you arrive acclimatized. We split them by gender, because the watts-per-kilogram spread is different for men and women.

Why Altitude Is Worth Training For

Living at altitude before the race is the gold standard, but it is expensive and hard to arrange for most riders. Do what you can within your means to earn favorable altitude adaptations. Heat training, intermittent hypoxia from an altitude tent or a device like HEPOX, and getting to Leadville as early as your schedule allows all help. Any of them improves your buckle odds without adding a single watt.

Aerodynamics Matter More This Year

Climbing power gets most of the attention at Leadville, but aerodynamics have always mattered here. The long, mostly flat miles from the base of Columbine back toward town are where a slippery rider gains free minutes on a rider who sits up. Those miles are still in the 2026 course. What changed is the finish: instead of the Powerline climb, the new route takes Turquoise Lake Road up to Carter Summit and then climbs to the line. With Powerline gone and the flat sections mostly the same, more of your day is spent at speed, so aerodynamics count for more of your finish time than they used to.

Your position on the bike is the biggest lever, and it costs nothing. Practice holding an aero position with your elbows bent and your head and shoulders low, and build up to holding it for long stretches instead of a few seconds at a time. That is the cheapest speed on the course.

After position, look at your kit. Choose an aero helmet over a vented one, even though the vented lid feels cooler. Wear the tightest jersey and bib shorts you own, or a skinsuit if you have one. Loose fabric flapping in the wind is slower than it feels.

If you are chasing the big buckle or a specific time goal, the small stuff is worth it too:

  • Aero socks
  • Shoe covers
  • Fork fairings
  • Other small details that clean up the airflow around you and your bike

None of these replace fitness or a good position, but they add up when you are racing the clock.

What This Means for Your Race

  • The clock got tighter, but the buckle got easier. The 2026 reroute cut enough climbing that both buckles are more attainable than before, even with the shorter cutoffs.
  • The little buckle is a real goal. At 2.9 W/kg on the new course, more than half of men and better than a third of women already have the FTP. Show up fit and pace it well.
  • The big buckle is hard, but it is not out of reach. Around 3.4 W/kg, roughly one in four men and one in nine women. That is a training target, not a genetic gift.
  • Altitude is free speed if you earn it. Arrive acclimatized and you keep power that a cold arrival gives away.
  • Get aero on the new course. With Powerline gone and the flat miles unchanged, more of your day is spent at speed. A low, practiced position and tight kit are close to free time.
