It measured 206w
I canāt now as I cancelled the free trial
Iād imagine there wouldnāt be a breakthrough on a 60 min FTP test. MPA will likely be pretty depleted by the end, but unless there was a sprint at the end, Iād wager no breakthrough.
Thatās probably why it only measured 172W. It needs maximal efforts to calculate TP. Probably wasnāt enough data to be accurate for you.
So it calculates ftp from max efforts? Does it not use 20min or something power?
thatās why the fitness signature in Xert was off.
you need some maximum efforts at a few different durations to start getting a good fitness signature.
Xert was telling me I had a 325w FTP, which I knew was low based on HR and watts for all the sub-maximal riding Iād been doing. After one good fartlek session with some full-gas 3-5min efforts, each one capped off with the best sprint I could manage, it was up to 345w, which matched up perfectly with the watt/HR Iād seen at lower intensities.
Like any other modelling, Xert works really well when you give it enough data, and the right kind of data.
I had the opposite experience! It was telling me my TP was 337W, and I didnāt believe it was that high until I did a fully commited ride using MPA as a pacing strategy. It was spot on.
No, it doesnāt use 20 min power to calculate TP. It uses all the data it has, but needs some maximum efforts to keep it up to date. There are workouts on the Xert designed to push you to a breakthough to get it up to date. They are awful!!!
It uses max efforts of any duration. the key is that it has to be a max effort.
here is my monday feb 17 ride ā the ābreakthroughā came after I flogged myself at 400w for 5min, and then did an all-I-had-left :10 sprint to reach MPA (Maximum power available).
I know from 20 years of PM use that whatever Iām doing at a HR of 123 day in, day out is ~75% of FTP. 260w@123 bpm matches up well with that 345FTP.
Give it the max, and the modelling works. It gets tricky when youāre no longer doing max efforts.
It probably would deplete quickly, but not to a breakthough. I am just speculating though!
I am not sure that is exactly the same but I think Wābal in other tools is very similar to MPA and has similar issues with not modelling fatigue very well. The FTP estimation in Intervals.icu also relies on doing max efforts every now and then to update so it has similar limitations to Xert.
I paid for a year of Xert but I donāt think Iāll renew. I get there data but their workouts and workout plan seems to extreme. Maybe Iāve never gotten far enough ahead of my XSS points but it never gave me days to rest or take off. Also, there are multiple times where it will say I am fresh but TP says Iām exhausted and I should take time off.
Over the winter I had my improvement rate set at maintenance and I just recently moved it to Slow. Funny thing, when I was racing a lot on Zwift and felt like I was killing myself every night Xert would tell me I was fresh every day. I quit Zwift last month and been just doing TR. Last week was not a hard week for me but Xert was telling me I was tried. Almost like it was upside down.
I have noticed that since doing just TR that I havenāt had close to a breakthrough yet on Xert. When I was racing a lot on Zwift, I seemed to have a breakthrough every week or so. And since doing just TR my FTP on Xert has gone down roughly 6 watts.
Also, it seems like every workout that Xert suggest is a interval workout. Your killing yourself everyday without a zone 2 or recovery rides. Or maybe if I followed their plans closer it would build those into the plan.
Thatās largely by design. Doing workouts can lead to some PRās, but it depends on your season in play, the duration and time you spend at the planned zones.
Assuming a typical plan, you may see more PRās in the FTP testing that are part of the plan. To get ārealā PRās, you likely need to include outside rides, Zwift rides or races, or deliberate workouts to push particular zones.
Andy is your threshold set correctly there?
Agree totally re Zwift - it works. I just wish TR would allow the push of workouts to Zwift like Todays Plan and Training Peaks do. It would add value to a TR sub, not diminish it.
Wishing the very same wish here.
I agree, but past history and their refusal to even utter the āZā word (and criticism of āvolcanoāsā in discussions about entertainment) is a pretty clear sign they donāt plan to head that way.
I hope they change their tune, because Z & TR are one hell of a combo for many users here.
Yes.
