Your FTP improvements

Did the ftp test that is part of my build phase. Was not optimistic as I was sick for a month and had problems doing sessions and eventually had to skip a week. Took it slow the week before today, doing only Baxter type of rides. Ftp test came up 264. An increase that I was surprised myself.

Zwift 20min Tests
29th Mar FTP 239w @ 110kg = 2.17w/kg
11th April FTP 246w @ 109kg = 2.25w/kg
7th May FTP 262W @ 107kg = 2.44w/kg
16th July FTP 283W @ 100kg = 2.83w/kg
31st July FTP 307W @ 100kg = 3.07w/kg
3rd Oct FTP 310W @ 96.7kg = 3.205w/kg

Trainer road - Ramp tests
8th Oct FTP 299W @ 95.5kg = 3.13w/kg
5th Nov FTP 310W @ 95.5kg = 3.25w/kg Half way through SPB MV
3rd Dec FTP 319W @ 93.1 kg = 3.43w/kg End of SPBMV
7th Jan FTP 327W @ 92.6 kg = 3.53w/kg mid Mid HMHV II
28th Jan FTP 334W @92.2 kg = 3.62w/kg End of HMHV II
19th Mar FTP 336W @ 92.1 kg = 3.65w/kg Mid Century Speciality
8th May FTP 311W @ 92.5kg = 3.36w/kg mix and match stuff

Had a couple of Audax’s, two very easy ā€˜taper’ weeks and a weeks holiday in last five weeks so no surprise at FTP reduction. The 400KM at weekend probably left a bit of fatigue in legs on Ramp test. Happy for reduction as I’m starting some sweet spot mid volume and know I’d fail workouts at previous FTP. Another weeks holiday planned soon so aim is to maintain this level over the next two months.

@Crownan You should considere that 2,5% is within the margin of error of your powermeter…
Moreover, the FTP test is just a tool to train effectively.

IMO There is too little difference between your last 3 tests for you to worry!

Yeah I kind of had that in the back of my mind! Workouts feel about perfect at 232 so i’ll stick with it :slightly_smiling_face:

May I get access to those VO2 max series? Thank you.

Delighted with my progress thus far on TrainerRoad. I have had some illness and injury that has set me back along the way somewhat, always seems to be when i’m consistent and on a good run of training that I get injured or sick

I weigh 79kg and still have lots of ā€œfatā€ to lose which brings me up to 3.94 w/kg, very happy with this number.

Slow and steady. Happy with 14w in 4 weeks! But holy crap Mount Goode looks impossible to do this week! :grimacing:

July '18 - 202 FTP - 85KG - 2.37w/kg - No training, just keeping fit
March '19 - 228 FTP - 82KG - 2.78w/kg - No structure but lots of Indoor Spinning for 8mths
May '19 - 231 FTP - 80KG - 2.89w/kg - End of SSBLV1

tbh I was a little dissapointed as I had expected more of an uplift, but I messed up my Ramp Test by ending a minute early and miss judging the time :confounded:
Starting SSBLV2 today so will give it another go in 6 weeks.

Hello Ravivw
I“m interesting the plan VO2. Please send me data base.
Regards
JLXC

I wanted to add that I went to a Mid Volume plan Century plan because I thought recovery was getting difficult for me from High Volume Sustained and I lost 10-15 watts on my FTP.
I will try and stick to high volume plan, if possible.

Feel like I made a big improvement in ssb2 got my ftp up to 260w and weight hovering around 82kg giving me a 3.15 w/kg

Urgh. Mine isn’t going at all well. Too many weeks off illness:

October was 195W.
SS Low 1 took me to 200W
Nov/Dec did SS mid 1, go to 203W
Dec/Feb took SS mid 2, got to 204W
Mar/Apr did BB mid - got to 213W
Apr got fat - down to 205W
Now half-way through BB Mid again - 208W

50 year old and I can’t seem to get it up.

229 for a 3.39w/kg and a 3.2% increase. Edging ever closer to 3.5 and then setting sights firmly on getting to 4w/kg. Once injury stays away this seems at least plausible and my TSS is going back up into the region I feel that I need it to be to make the improvements I want.

Another poor test for me this morning with no improvement in FTP after SSB.

had alot else going on and training hasn’t been as consistent as I would like so I guess its expected, although still depressing.

Staring General Build now so hopefully I see an increase.

Beginning of Century MV1 FTP Test, 277w, up from 255w. Super excited to have a nice sized increase of 8.6%. Started back at 239w in January on the low volume plans, and moved to mid volume for the build. Chugging my way along to 4.0w/kg!

That’s a great bike. My first good road bike was a candy apple red Lemond Zurich, I think a 1996. sweet ride on Reynolds 853 steel and Ultegra STI.

I did a Ramp test Monday morning and while there was a small improvement I reckon I bottled it.
The first time my legs started to slow down I just stopped. Looking back I think I could of lasted another 40 seconds easily and maybe more.

Would you redo the test?

In early versions of the ramp test the instruction text would tell you to stop if your cadence dropped below 70 RPM. I’m not sure if this is still the case but it the guide l follow (more or less).

I agree with this, although my goal is 80rpm throughout and once I’m unable to sustain it then I’m done. I’ve done Ramp tests in the past where I go until I’m physically unable to turn the pedals like the text says, but I found that I could always just turn the pedals with ERG mode, even if I’m at an absolute crawl at 10rpm. The result of doing this was a grossly overestimated FTP. Doing it based on cadence always results in an accurate result for me.
