No I wouldn’t redo. I’d see how the first couple weeks workouts go and if you think you can raise the intensity of all of them by a couple % I’d just manually adjust my FTP by that amount
244>259FTP(6%) after first 4 weeks of general build mv. This brings me to a 3.89w/kg, closing in on 4.
Did the ramp test the day after a 100km club ride. So maybe my FTP is underestimated, but seems fine for now.
I redid the test yesterday. Increased my ftp another 12 watts on top of the five from the first test. I guess I’ll find out if I made a mistake in the next couple of weeks. Will let you know how it goes.
Here’s a quick update as I wrap up SSB2HV: I bumped myself to 310w for this round of SSB. For those unfamiliar with me, I stopped doing any type of testing and basically let my performance in each training phase dictate whether I’d do a modest increase in target wattage. I began my season in November with a 275w (3.9ish w/kg) and increased it through SSB1, 2, and sustained power build HV. I’m in my 6th week of SSB2HV in my second go around before I train for CX season. So, nominally I’m at 310w (4.4w/kg), but don’t ask me to do any type of sustained effort at that level right now lol But I’m pretty excited about the type of power I can develop over build and specialty, considering I did pretty ok (and felt great) in CX last season at 275w FTP.

I don’t think you’ve made a mistake…if that’s what you tested at then thats your FTP (first one was just a bad test which happens).
I just wouldn’t have done one because of not wanting to do another ramp test. I don’t think there’s a downside to what you’ve done.
Started SSBLV at the end of April. FTP of 192 and 1.88 w/kg.
Tested last night at an FTP of 217 and w/kg of 2.25.
So i kinda failed my last ramp test about 1.5 months ago since i’d given blood a week prior and was still weaksauce.
So i still had my 196 FTP from like 3 months ago. I was at about 89kg so that put me at 2.20w/kg
Went and did one yesterday. I have been really awful at sticking with my plan because…well we finally have some nice weather. I’ve been mainly doing 2-3 rides every week (about 2 commutes of 50km each and 1 weekend ride of about 50km)
So i got a result of 195 FTP which at first was a bummer. But i’m now at 83kg which puts me at 2.34w/kg.
So overall i’ve increased
so that tells me that if i can start sticking some training sessions back in now that i’ve “acclimated” to my commute again (i’m recovered by the next day) i might see some nice incremental ftp gains.
I’ll attribute weight loss to my fasted commutes in the morning ![]()
Now i reaaaaaaaally gotta start running again cause i feel like i might die at my triathlons if i don’t do anything about them

First time ever “training” for cycling, but have certainly ridden more in the past. 60 days of zero riding going into Jan FTP test (Nov. / Dec.) Have had many other life stressors during this time, many workouts were missed or turned down, plus a pretty terrible diet for alot of it / lack of sleep. Not sure what gains are normal, but I am happy with my progress, 46 watts or 18-19% improvement over 4 1/2 - 5 months.
Up until now, I’ve been using a dumb trainer (no power meter) for all my TR rides. Virtual FTP is 260. Yesterday I purchased my first Smart Trainer (Tacx Neo) & decided to do the 8 Minute FTP test. Man, what an eye opener…& reality check! FTP is 194 2.69 FTP/kg. I was spent, hit HR’s that I’ve only ever achieved on outdoor hill climbs. Got a lot to learn using a smart trainer. I guess my “real TR” experience starts now.
While the numbers are different, your power source is different as well. The suffering will feel the same. It’s all relative. Now if you use the virtual FTP as your TR FTP while using the Neo for power, expect your legs to get ripped off!
You did the right thing by retesting w/your new power source (i.e., Neo) to get your new FTP for setting your workouts. Now, get back to suffering! ![]()

This! When the first 8 min block commenced, I hit 260…for a few seconds. Then I slowly died! I had to ignore the graph & ride to a power/cadence output that I could sustain.
Looking forward to to more rides on the new new trainer!

Pretty happy about today. Getting closer (although a year or two will be necessary) to my ultimate goal (4w/kg) to be able to enter in Spanish amateur races.
Just finished my first A race of the year which was a 4 stages weekend event. I think the timing is good to share my FTP improvement.
I started cycling last year in October.
First FTP test 190w @ 75kg = 2,53w/kg
One week prior to my A race, I did a 20 FTP test.
Results: 293w @ 61kg = 4,8w/kg
I finished 3rd overall (Cat 3) and only 8 minutes behind the P-1-2 field on the final stage that was a 126km road race with 2500m elevation gain (Matt Zimmer won the overall of the P-1-2 field).
Even if I am really proud of all the work I put in, I must admit that I ate a humble pie during that day. I tought I was a good climber, but it turns out that I still have a lot of work to do in order to compete with the best. I’ll keep racing this summer and make improvements for my second A race in August.
However, I am looking forward for my off season that will start in October to do a proper base training.
Next year, I aiming for a 315-320w FTP @ 58kg to reach the 5,5w/kg

Just finished base training for Ironman LOW Volume and only saw my FTP bump up 2 watts. I feel like the test wasn’t my best as I am not the best with the ramp test. (Also forgot to set up fan and legs are burnt from weekend training).
I didn’t expect a massive gain since I am only 6 months in to power meter training and I HAVE seen gains over previous tests but feel i could have jumped another 2-3 watt in this one. I feel stronger than ever on the bike.
Do i just take my results or try another test?

Dedication and consistency. I think there is a big difference between motivation and discipline. If I look at my calendar, the only workouts I missed where related to illness. Moreover, when I train/race, I have a beast mode switch that allows me to go deep to trigger a positive adaptation. Also, I think that tracking your objectives on a daily basis is imperative to stay focused. I put a picture of my bathroom door at the end of the post. I tracked my weight every single day and wrote my objectives at the beginning of the whole process. I had my objectives in front of me every time I walked off my bedroom.

Background and knowledge. I have been playing hockey since I am 4 years old (I’ll be 26 in two weeks). During the winter I can play up to 4 times a week. I don’t think that playing hockey has a huge impact on cycling performance, but it surely helps. Also, I have been training in the gym for 7 years squatting, deadlifting and benching heavy loads. I think that this neuromuscular power could have been an asset. Finally, in order to build strength and muscle you need some knowledge regarding nutrition. I applied this knowledge and the new one I learned trough the weekly podcast to support my body composition and performance improvements.

Really well done, @jeanchristopheroy. Your improvement is awesome alone, but your performance is truly impressive - sounds like you could have legitimately hung with the P/1/2’s! When you get yourself to 5.5, I have zero doubt you’ll hold your own on the climbs regardless of category, and everything else will follow right along, so stick with it. Good luck, man!
