$20 for a tire? Even though the races are some of my least favorite tires, I’d jump at the chance to only spend 20 bucks for a tire. Colorado rips thru tires quickly
No point wasting money on a rubbish tyre though… And it’s UK mixed conditions it’ll be used for, although we are heading for drier trails now.
I don’t want to invest much money in more tyres as it new bike time in September, and it’ll come with a descent set, and I won’t have worn out the triggers broom 2023 season set already in the bike (Barzo/Ardent race).
I’m fitting up tires for Sea Otter (Fuego XL) and I have a supply of “The Racing Brothers” Ray and Ralph.
Ran a 2.35 Ray F and 2.25 Ralph R last weekend, both measured up at 57mm inflated on 30mm IW rims. That I thought was odd that what should be wider on front measured up the same as the rear.
The rear has seen better days and I wanted to go wider, so I mounted up a 2.35 on the back. Now that one measures out at 60mm inflated, which again struck me as odd. Why doesn’t the 2.35 Front measure up at 60mm.
I did the same on a Barzo 2.35 I have mounted on another set of wheels (25mm inner width) and they are also 57mm inflated.
Anyone else see this? Now I’m thinking I need to go back to a 2.25 on the back because my brain is having issues with going wider on the back as this isn’t a motorcycle. I mean I EXPECT to run the same or one size smaller out back, but yeesh.
what about tire pressure? I have a ray/burt I can measure to see how they do on a 28mm internal
Put them both at 20 psi
F 57.3mm
R 59.1mm
Thought maybe it was the fact I did not put an Airliner in the front, but that made all of 0.1 mm difference
Inflate to max psi and let them sit overnight somewhere warm. Or better yet, let them sit in the hot sun all day. They will stretch a bit.
Well since sidewall suppleness = low rolling resistance, I would bet good money that those are slower.
I’d prefer to pump my tyres up before a race.
Just an update on the Wolfpack Race/Cross combo…ran them at a short track race last night. The venu is super looss, off camber and flat corners…have raced there tons over the years and never felt confident in the corners. The Cross front tire changed that. Tons of grip…the 2.4 measured 2.38…ran 20 psi. I actually won the Master’s 55+.
This helped quite a bit. Thanks!
Watching the Pisgah Stage Race highlights, looks like the Rejon Race front/Aspen Rear is the combo for the fast people
Looks like all the Schwalbe riders in the elite XCC and XCO on the weekend were running the super race Tyre casings despite what BRR says is faster…
Does anyone have any thoughts on the 60TPI Rekon Race for the rear of a hardtail raced on super technical courses known for flats? I only have experience with the 120TPI version which I flatted last year without an insert. I don’t think I’ve ever ridden a 60TPI tire so was curious about the real world difference besides a little weight.
Is the Maxxis Ikon still relevant?
Rekon Race is the worst tire I ever tried… on the other hand both Aspen and Ikons (old 3C compound) was great… Rekon Race was like too much in between and not good at anything
As a rear tyre for me, yes it is.
My experience is different. I love the 2.4 Maxxspeed Rekon Race 120tpi. It just works for my riding style and trails. In the 50+ race category for yesterday’s local XC race, the entire podium was guys racing the Rekon Race 2.4.
