XC Race Tire Thread

Yes, for sure. Comparing the puncture resistance and everything else objectively would be great. Getting trail/enduro tires enough votes on BRR to get tested is difficult though.

I’ve been voting for the Python Race, but would really like to see some ‘trail/enduro’ tires just to compare. After throwing votes at those tires in the past I’ve quit trying, but would love to see what the new Schwalbe radials do.

I don’t generally run XC tires, except on gravel, so I tend to try and pick out casing trends to apply to meatier treads (Nobby Nics are my current fast/grippy enough choice).

according to Schwalbe, the new radial tires rolls slower compared to the “standard” version

bet it grips more too, but any tire with serious knobs almost certainly “fail” the BRR grip test due to the test method which emphasize more “smooth” rubber and more flat contact surface.

BRR test is far from perfect… for example why test 2.4 tires at 1.7bar as minimum pressure? Who runs that high?
Off course it would give very close numbers compared to 2.25 tires, where 1.7bar would be still high, but not that crazy high…

Really hope BRR will have a test run with the same manufacturer-same tire, just with different sizes: 2.25 vs 2.4 but with real life adjusted pressure!
Myself at around 65kg, on xc(m) races i tend to run 2.25 tires at 1.2-1,3bar rear(race king) but just 1.0-1.05bar in case of 2.4 Vittoria Peyote…

Or what is the point of testing wider road tires (30mm) at 6.2bar and 7.4bar (just to keep all test data “aligned”, while the manufacturer (Continental) allowed maximum pressure is 5bar…

The Python Race has been cleaning up so far… 46 votes and counting this month!

honestly proud of how a “few” die hard mtb riders still have a good chance “against” the gravelboyz

What do you guys do to prevent sealant drying up? I know you can just add more sealant, but this is just adding more weight every time that I do it, and 700g tyres end up being 800g in a few months.

Install new tires before the events that matter

Fair enough

Yep. All the new tires are mounted before A events. Then rotate. There is a lot of waste if your focus is performance and racing.
Last year I handed over two boxes of semi used tires to local clubs with junior riders. 20+ pairs at least. They looked at me like I was the reason for all that is wrong in the world.
Kids.

What are the general experiences with the new Vittoria Peyote ? Are they any better than the Aspens in wet conditions ?
I really, really like the 2.4 Aspens on dry trails, but :

  • the RR penalty (on the testing) over alternatives is always in the back of my head
  • they are deadly on slimy conditions I get for almost half the year here

The Racing Ray/Ralph I’m using surely rolls fast and behaves OK in the slime/mud (specially the Ray) but the lack of volume is frustrating. The bike feels slower on the trails, nervous and much less comfortable after you try whats in fact a 2.5 tire…

Never tried the Aspens, but the Peyote in mud, even in light mud is like riding on ice  but that is just like every tire with such a minimal knob in the center. Once it got “filled” with mud (and that can happen very very easily) is almost like riding a slicks until it got cleaned on drier parts or rocks…
Personally had no problem running them as a rear tire even in mud, but for the front i would put something like Rocket Ron… Most of the rolling resistance on mtb came from the rear tire(70%) …

I am curios about these radials, I already run quite high pressures, as a larger rider. Folks running the radials run a few PSI higher, I wonder if the radials in at 30 would be slower than other tires at 28/27 or so. Speaking enduro/trail here.

If anyone in new england has a pile of tires like this (mine has been depleted), I’ve got 15 or so juniors that would finish them off in no time.

Anyone heard anything about rocket ron 2.4? Still have my rick xc on the shelf, haven’t used yet not wuite sure if I grab another one or wait

Ok, thats not very encouraging…

I’ve definitely asked for them to do a DHF cause they are the standard ‘trail’ tire. An assegai would be really interesting too. I was hoping they would even do it outside the voting altogether. It’s just interesting cause I feel like most people are running super slow tires needlessly.

I ride on mud quite a bit and an aspen kicks *ss. If I know I’ll deal with a lot of mud I’ll chose an aspen over a r ralph any day all day.

Hopefully it’s tougher than the Blackbird (Road) I just mounted. I only put about 2 miles on it before it punctured and would not seal.

What makes you dislike the Racing Ralph so much compared to the Aspen with mud ?

IME the ralph gives up much quicker as soon as any moisture is involved. Free water means dragging and spinning on technical and steep stuff. Also, it packs thick mud and doesn’t release it as quick as the aspen does. I know it might seem counter intuitive. I didn’t believe until I tried.
