Who’s in the sick house?

Omg, just went to calendar and discovered push week function :+1: kudos to TR team

That’s the way. :+1:

It’s the miracle function for vacations, business travel, sick periods, and just plain lazyness.

This week should be my come back to structured training with ssblv1, but flu got me… if I start base this week, diaster 2019 would fall right at the last day of training! sigh…

just push 1 week and hope my condition gets better.

Man I was looking forward to training hard this weekend. Girlfriend was out of town, had all my nutrition (rice cakes!) cooked and ready. Workouts scheduled and podcasts downloaded.

Then, Friday night comes. It gets cold, and I forget to turn on the heater before I go to sleep. It’s 57 degrees in my apartment the next morning, and my throat feels like sandpaper.

It’s Sunday night and I still feel horrific. Talking hurts, going up the stairs nearly killed me. Gonna ease back in Tuesday and see how it goes.

Got a pneumonia vaccination yesterday and today I’ve got pneumonia…symptoms. Lovely hacking cough, achey bones, and that great feeling spreading across my shoulder and neck from the injection site. :+1:

Maybe the flu shot I’m getting later this week will counteract the pneumonia.

Shame, it’s been so rideabley dry here.

That guy really loves sound effects.

On topic: I’ve had a cold for 2 weeks, my RHR is up by about 10BPM and my breathing is absolutely screwed when exercising. Struggled with easy workouts so paused bike training last week, hoping to resume today.

Did a couple of runs in the interim just to not let down a friend and my Garmin ‘performance condition’ was showing as -9, which is as bad as I’ve ever seen it.

My youngest son had a nasty bug for a week, then it took down my wife who ended up with pneumonia. Thought I had escaped but then my oldest son and I went down HARD late last week with chest infections. I had just finished a SS Base1 block and was supposed to start SSMV2 this week with an FTP test today. Not gonna happen as I can barely finish a sentence without coughing.

Concerned about losing the gains I made during the 6 week SS block, but it is what it is. I know I won’t gain back the 10lbs I lost at least!

Probably will be off the bike for at least another week.

I know how that goes. I have a 6yr, 4yr, and 15mo old. The first grader always brings it home this time of year and I’m usually the last person to get it. I’ve been more or less sick for the last 3 weeks. Cannot kick the lingering sore throat and cough.

Does anyone have tips/tricks for living with kids in regards to sickness? I know it’s totally normal, but outside of handwashing is there anything you take (supplement wise) or do that helps deal?

Not sure if it’s sold in the US, but here in Canada we have an herbal supplement called ColdFx that supposedly boosts your immune system. It may be a placebo but I’ve found when I first get a tiny hint of getting sick (or when my kids are) I take it as directed.

It seems to be able to ward off common colds etc., or greatly reduce the severity of them. I also load up on Vit C. Again, I’m just going by what I have noticed, totally a non-scientific study.

I’ve avoided a few colds that have taken the rest of the fam down by taking it (my wife doesn’t take it, gives her acid reflux). Have I been lucky, or does the stuff help? Dunno. Hasn’t hurt me though (other than the cost to buy the stuff). YMMV.

That said, It didn’t help for this nasty thing…

No, just try not to stress it. Getting sick is part of being alive.

I try to avoid sharing drinks and food when one of us is sick.

I have been down for a week. Hoping the antibiotics and steroids do their thing.

I do believe a few years ago the company got taken to court for false claims of such.
It’s parent company is Valeant Pharma (nee)…and we all know what a stand-up co. that was!

Ha. Good to know.

Yeah a couple of things on so-called “immune system boosters”. The short story is that they do not work, and even if they did, you wouldn’t want to take them.

So, there are two parts to your immune system. The first is your “learned” immune system. Your body sees an invader, forms antibodies and “remembers” that invader so that if you encounter it again, you can fight it off with a minimum of fuss. This is when you get a vaccine, or experience an invader like chicken pox – one time and you’re done. No supplement can possibly strengthen your learned immune system, only vaccines and prior encounters with invaders can.

The second part of your immune system is the “reactive” part. This is your body detecting an invader, finding that it doesn’t have a prepared response, and having to “rally the troops” while it creates one. The reactive system is made up of the stuff we know and hate: runny nose, cough, fever, diarrhea, the whole sorry lot. The body is so good at this part, that it goes way overboard, to the point where the stuff we buy over the counter is to reduce our body’s response to sickness. You know, lower fever, suppress cough, dry up the sinuses, and so on. Evolution has determined that it’s way better to be sick than dead, so we have symptoms way past the point where the body is on the mend. No supplement can increase your reactive response, and even if it could, you wouldn’t want it (EDIT: this previously said “learned” but I’ve corrected it)

So, don’t buy any of those “immune system boosters” because they’re hot, useless garbage. I mean, if they make you feel better, go for it, just be aware that it’s all just placebo effect. You’ll be infinitely better off just resting, getting good sleep, drinking lots of fluids, using a nasal rinse if you have a head cold, and suppressing cough and fever (as needed).

Good info. I think I’ve spent my last dime on that stuff. How does one retract a post in embarrassment? LOL :joy:

In other news, I am feeling quite a bit better now, leaps and bounds over Saturday, which was the “hit by a truck” day.

Deep breaths feel good. I may try an easy spin tomorrow.

Ha. Yes. My 15yo son who got sick the same time as me said the other day “Dad, if this is what a man-cold is, I’d like to go back to being 10 again…”

Went through the same a few months ago, and again on my 2nd shot of shingles vax. Hits 12 hours after the shot, lasts 24 hours. The pneumonia one was the worst - ended in bed shivering at sweating at the same time for hours.

But now that it’s over, I know I won’t get the 1-2-weeks of sidelines every couple of years for sone pneumonia - somehow I get those once in a while.

Came across this in another thread that may help with concerns about losing hard-won fitness due to short-term illness/injury.

Thanks to @mcneese.chad for posting it.

Cheers
