I use the Mozilla VPN and it works flawlessly w/ GCN. First time I’ve ever been able to watch the Giro; usually watch CX races or one of their documentaries doing TR workouts. Absolutely love it and will happily pay full price if no specials are available. Still a terrific bargain compared to NBC Gold or Flobike. If I want big screen, I just hook a HDMI cable from laptop to TV
I’ll gladly subscribe again when my time comes in March, but I wish they would add a search to their site/app, preferably with filters. Over the winter I watched a lot of races I’ve missed this season and it’s quite a hassle going through the library.
I’ll definitely re-up at full price (assuming it remains at $50…which I am not certain it will).
That said, they really need to fix a lot of the issues that still plague the experience….first and foremost, the occasional crashing of the system on race day. Close behind, the audio has been absolutely crap for the CX World Cup / Super Prestige races. Almost half the races have had no audio, others have had intermittent sound, etc. You also still can’t Airplay any of the races to a TV or AppleTV.
There are other minor issues, but those are the big ones that really need to be addressed.
I dropped it. Unlike many others here, I don’t find watching racing while on the trainer to be engaging enough to distract me from the pain or to make long rides feel shorter, so it’s hard for me to find 2-3 hours several days a week to watch. I tend to only watch a few stages of GTs in full, and too many classics were unavailable in the US. I’ll just watch highlights on YouTube this year.
OK….your membership card. Hand it over.
I am able to stream/cast from my phone to Apple TV. I find I have to use the ‘share’ not ‘stream’ button to get it to work.
You could also try browser on mobile and cast from browser to tv (vs app)
Hmmm….I’ll give it another go and see what happens.
Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the reminder. Need to see when mine is up for renewal.
+1 on better organization of the site/search function
And also wish they had an apple TV app…
Also my CX watching has taken a big hit this year. Won’t subscribe to flo which seems to have the major races unfortunately, which I wrongly thought would be on gcn. Missing nbc gold.
Mozilla VPN, I believe, uses the Mullvad servers.
Maybe save yourself some cash and cut out the middle man and subscribe directly to Mullvad?
Mozilla is slightly less ($4 something/month).
I used it a lot at first, but like you, I never set up a VPN so I mainly watched highlights on youtube. This might be an “American” response, but so many races happen early in the morning and I’m not a morning person so I missed them. I will cancel mine and maybe re-up if there’s another $25 discounted price. I’m pretty content to watch other things while on the trainer.
I signed up what back in January for the $25 half off in January.
They said they would have a Roku app “soon”.
Well, they must measure in decades because it is not here yet.
Not like they don’t have money or support, it’s owned by Eurosport/Discovery, right?
I did not use it much and won’t sign up again until they have what they promise.
Thanks for the tips, but neither option worked trying to stream to my AppleTV. Phone says it is being shown on AppleTV, but my screen just shows the AppleTV menu screen.
Mozilla is fractionally less if you pay for 12 months up front. Otherwise Mullvad is cheaper in every other scenario.
You totally can airplay races that are available in the US. Now if youre using a vpn and hitting races not available to the US, then yeah, airplay is not gonna work, but thats because your not supposed to be streaming them at all, so dont put gcn down for that.
I just checked my account, and I’m early Feb for renewal, and it’s showing $49.99 for 2022.
I see Mullvad is $5.50/mth, and Mozilla is $60/year. I just need to check the details as far as if I can setup VPN on the my firestick, laptop, desktop and iphone. I’d really like to have a dead simple setup. Either the computer always uses the VPN when it’s started, or one particular browser is linked through VPN and I just know that “chrome is vpn, and firefox is regular” or something.
I don’t watch when training, but quite like having it on in the background when I’m starting work (from home) and checking emails and so on early in the morning.
So right now, after getting a little more excited about being able to watch more than I did last year, I’ll probably just do it. The Giro was great to watch. I probably have lots of their doco’s and stuff to catch up on too.
As I’m in the US, if the price goes up to $50 I won’t renew. The US race selection is pretty bare. I hate seeing the list of races, click on one, and get the “not available in your area” message. If it isn’t available in my area, don’t show it at all.
Vpn is your answer
Then charge me less if to get full value I have to buy a 2nd service. I get that licensing rules are crazy, but you are selling a service in a market where you cannot offer full value, so don’t expect to get paid for full value.
And given where we are in technology development, showing me a bunch of races that I cannot watch, and you know that when I click to watch the race, is infuriating. I shouldn’t have to know what I can / cannot watch, that is GCN’s responsibility
Unless they do the half price thing again I’m out.
Reasons…
-Still no Roku app
-Casting is very clunky on my Chromecast
-Firestick app is ok but could work smoother
-Live-streaming usually has troubles
-Can’t seem to find this years classics anywhere to rewatch because…
-No search feature
-Limited events shown in US and…
-Most races/shows end up on YouTube anyways
Had high hopes for this but unfortunately (for me) my money is better spent on YouTube.
