Where did you workout (ride, run, etc) OUTSIDE today? (2023)

I live ~1km from your start/end point. Not sure which way you went up (the left route or right route). Assuming you went up the left which is Bishan and then linked up to the top of FengGuiZui (aka FGZ), then came back down via WZS. That’s a nice morning! Def do not let it rip on any of these roads in the damp. Caution is the word!

@WindWarrior It’s been about 17C in the morning the last couple days, but damp. So, kinda bleh.

edit: the climb you descended (WZS) is a nice climb going up ( ~10km), steepish from start to about 2/3. The final 1/3 is so so, but can be rough if you’ve been pushing the first 2/3

Oh damn dude…I am staying at the Hotel Indigo near Miramar Mall.

If we can’t meet up this trip, I’ll be back in late April / early May.

ETA - and yes, I went up the left side and came down the right. Just a super ride…

Like I said, you’re literally in my backyard! The riding is super convenient. Mountain in the backyard with lots of choices or endless riverside in the other direction if you want something flat.

Yeah, I used to run on that path when I was doing triathlons.

Very jealous of your riding options…amazing you can get to these awesome, secluded mountain roads in less than a handful of KM from such a major city.

I also can’t believe I have never ridden out here before now…I’m an idiot!!

Anyone else wondering since now TR is supporting running when or if we’ll see a thread “Where did you RUN outside today?” @mcneese.chad @IvyAudrain :joy:

You don’t need permission from us, nor for us to make the thread.

Anyone here can do it, but please follow the basics of topic title conventions & tags (there’s one specific to running) used for this type of long range topic.

mornings are still 1-3C, but it was 20C this afternoon when I started my ride. First ride of 2023 wearing summer bibs.

Stopped at the first light on the double overpass and scanned for debris:

Nice screw waiting to puncture a tire. If I make the light my speed is about 48km/hour and its impossible to see debris like this. After the light turned green I rolled up the 2nd overpass and spotted at least 5 nails, screws, a lag bolt, and a wheel balancing weight. Joy.

Just got back in from this one. Had to stop midway for a work call and had cramp in both my thighs the last 30mins.

That would be awesome @mountainrunner ! And you don’t have to bring a bike to run on vacations! So maybe there would be really nice photos on the thread. It would be good incentive to change up my runs in any event!

@JMT and @mountainrunner i changed the thread title to Where did you workout OUTSIDE

so post any outside workout!

Hopefully with pics!

I’ll start, not much of an outside workout but SPRINTS for the #gainz don’t need a lot of work LOL

Woke up and did 20 yard sprints with arms waving to scare the ducks:

Twice. You know spring is coming when the ducks start looking for quiet ponds to setup house. And then tore apart the shed to extract a wheelbarrow for neighbors. Then espresso to finish the HR work.

Briefly spiked HR from 50s to 95+ - sorry I didn’t record actual HR from the sprint work :joy:

For a second I thought the ducks had torn apart your shed.

I must read more carefully.

I’m telling you, those ducks are the downfall of the neighborhood!

The usual Saturday morning group ride for me and it was quite sedate. The only thing of note is one of my mates turned up on a lovely new bike. Slightly annoyingly I have got away with nothing more than a wipedown after the ride for the last few weeks I think when I get to it a full degrease will be needed, the roads were filthy despite it having been dry for the last few weeks :joy:

This morning, it was a not-flat ride on the trails: 20 miles with 3100’ of climbing.

Most of the climbing was done in the first 12 miles.

It was cool for most of the ride at around -4C / 25F, but it warmed up to nearly 0C near the end. Traction was great on the frozen ground, with a bit of snow only at the highest elevation of the ride.

This frozen ground also meant the bike stayed clean, which was nice.

I stayed local, riding around my local river valley. I think the farthest point from home was perhaps 6 miles.

I drive the road through the small valley – Sihltalstrasse – every morning driving my son to school, making for a not-terrible commute.
Sights during the ride were, as they normally are, also not terrible.

The following pic is from a spot I often take a picture. It’s about an hour after sunrise and it felt colder than -4C, and probably was.

It was a good day in the saddle.

As for run pics, here are two from Thursday morning’s short 3.75mi run. I’m easing back into running after a short reset due to a calf injury (which could’ve been prevented from strength training and stretching/rolling). The first pic is from 5:40a; it’s about -6C / 21F under a recently full moon.

This second pic is from about a dozen minutes later. While the bridge pic above is from one of my favorite local spots for a pic while on the bike, below is my favorite picture spot while running. The undulating loop around this large pond is about 1200m, making for a great place to do “track” work.

Not far from this spot, off to the right beyond the small ridge, less than a half mile, is a “track” of fine sawdust (fine enough I’ve seen barefoot runners in the summer) set in the woods. It’s largely flat and with some slight turns through the woods to keep it from being a boring oval. I don’t use that track, but I suspect it’s about or perhaps slightly more than 400m.

Good times. Only 5 more months here…

Nice star pic, at first I thought it was Orion but not before dawn this time of year. That’s gotta be Scorpius and the low bright star would be Antares.

The WhatsApp group was quiet last night and I didn’t really expect to see anyone. I was delighted to see a mate on his mtb at the meet though and we headed up to the Fineshade Top Lodge cafe. We quite often end up there the cakes are good and the trails around the cafe well looked after. We took a familiar route: Yarwell Mill (by the Bridleway from Elton), Sulehay Forrest, Bedford Purlieus Woods, Kings Cliffe and Fineshade Woods. In the woods it was marginally different as my mate suggested that I do the Blue mtb route.

When we got to the cafe it looked empty but to our delight when we walked in another mate had just been served :+1:

We then went on to Wakerley Woods, Spanhoe, then the old road to the A43 just west of Bulwick. Just after there a roadie jumped into our draft and sat there through Blatherwycke, Kings Cliffe and Apethorpe. Circa 5.5miles of a free tow for him until we pulled of to the Apethorpe Cut through Bushrubs Woods. We then went to Nassington where one of my mates lives and I rode upto Wandsford with my other mate. They had both p’tured but luckily close to home.

After leaving them I doubled back to Elton. I was going to go back by road but decided I was more in the mood for off road so I cut down to the back of Yarwell Mill and the reverse of the bridleway we started on. I then decided to take the gated road to another bridle way and came back into Peterborough by Ferry Meadows park.

More outside miles in an upper midwest winter!

This ride brought to you by orange gatorade and plain m&m’s!

Took it easy today and cleaned up the roads:

Nice day, nothing but clear skies and views of the Sierras and thats Desolation Wilderness and some of the highest points in the Lake Tahoe basin:

a little further down the road:

Then a little time on some easy gravel:

and the Sierras again:

Road cleanup was fun, stopped a lot and removed branches, lag bolts, screws, barb wire, socket wrench, plastic swimming pool for toddlers (fell off truck that past me), saw blade, crowbar, and tire fragments. This was the worst tire:

Left a debris field for 1+km and this is where all those little wires come from:

that tubeless will seal but puncture tubes every 3-4 weeks. So thats why I run tubeless.

But couldn’t clear all the storm debris:

Just over 1km from the house I made a light with a little tailwind and hit the gas:

not all out but close. The big surge was just before the segment.

:metal:
