Where did you workout (ride, run, etc) OUTSIDE today? (2023)

we want to go back too!

We got out for a little Memorial Day ride while visiting family in Pine Mountain, GA. It was a very easy cruise with the wife on the Man O’ War Rail-to-Trail. BUT it was the first ride on the new bike (Motobecane Gravel X Pro)!

Quickie local gravel / trail ride I was able to squeeze in:

At the local rifle range (this black top lot is mostly for the rifle range parking that’s behind me as I shot the picture, pun intended, with the club house to my right out of the frame), they are setting up for a hip-hop festival for next weekend (9-10 June). It’s about 1mi to home from here, but I’ll be in Boston next weekend.

Double Metric on the TT today! Progress, my neck isn’t totally wrecked!

took a KOM from the guy that seems a bit possessive of them again. See what he does about it

Tried on a second one(~117 miles in  ). Missed it by 16 seconds(5 minute KOM) Looked up the historical weather for the KOM. was set with a mid to upper 20’s tailwind, I only had a 10mph tailwind

Congratulations! I didn’t even know bikes have a clutch. I guess I should look that up. LOL.

It almost never happened. I collected a wheel from the lbs at lunch time and the 15mins cycling back was enough to freeze my hands, back in the warmth it felt like I had chillblanes in my fingers  12degC isn’t actually that cold but after a fortnight of temperatures around 20deg C or higher (last Saturdays TT was an average of 24.2deg C according to the garmin), so 12degC sure felt cold. I decided though to avoid falling in to depression I’d force my self to get started on a workout (getting started is the hardest thing IME). I really should have done the workout/recce on my TT bike but I chose the lower gears of the road bike so I could spin and keep warm. I also had thick merino socks on, closed toe vents, overshoes, bib longs, base layer, winter jersey, and long fingered gloves. And in all honesty I could have had more

Meetup with the club for local hill intervals aka Hilltervals this glorious morning. 7a meet at the base, so I rolled out the door for the local ride at about 6:40a to near the meetup with time to see the Przewalski’s horses, with obligatory (?) yurt in the background for @JMT, but they were corralled and not free-roaming their enclosure.

The objective was 1min on, 1min off, with the “on” being 30s out of the saddle. I suggested 1min easy followed by backing off the next minute. I figure that I’m the only person under 3w/kg whereas everyone else most certainly in the 4-5w/kg range, making the below pic my last contact with the group, except when they were ascending whilst I was still descending or vic versa (a couple others started on the far side).

We went up the front side of Buchenegg (from my perspective, Lake ZĂźrich side), then did two repeats on the far side. Below is near the bottom of the far side.

I took a short breather at the end of the prescribed workout…

And then descended the far side again to go up the other nearby pass that’s part of my quick and dirty out the door ride. After a short incline ride, below is the start of the other climb.

And a still from the descent.

Overall, it was a good time in the saddle with some climbing.

Highlight video of the ride is below. This doesn’t, unfortunately, capture the views as well as the eye since the camera is low, but you’ll get the picture, so to speak. It’s 4k…

Why doesn’t anyone listen? Wed night group ride and allergies have been acting up again so I started 45 minutes early. Thankfully I found an ally, Joe from last week when we finished with the B group. We said bye bye to the C group and took the longer route. From that point on I pulled most of the way as you can see from that nice clean z2 power increasing slowly to z4:

Good long 30 minute pull and then I let Joe pull, but that didn’t last long so I went back out front again. Given how I felt, pretty happy with 30 minutes of upper aerobic work. A lot more than I thought after that 35min warmup when I still felt like :poop: and was wheezy / coughing.

I had a 4 x 5 on, 5 off threshold workout tonight but in all honesty I never had the motivation to push in the yet again cold and gloomy weather. It was more of a recce instead. Hopefully, the forecast is right and the sun comes out for my TT and the closed roads gives me the confidence to throw the bike round corners.

Been waking up at 4:30 to be out the door by 5am and have actually been enjoying it. Today I got to watch a beautiful northwoods WI sunrise between 4 minute VO2 max intervals.

Great pic!

A riding buddy did this route today:

someone in the comments called it the Hungry Hippo ride, so I screen grabbed it and doddled.

Couple years ago I used part of that route to make a moose

for @Scheherazade !

Today was the first HOT ride of the season for me @ 93F/34C. I felt great for the first 75 mins and then cracked like an egg :fried_egg: :fried_egg:

I had 64 oz with me and drank every drop. I weighed myself before and after the ride and lost 5.8 lbs, after consuming 4 lbs of water.:fire::rofl::crazy_face:

I dont think I’ve cycled in temps over 30deg C/86F this year and in this topsy turvy weather we were back to 12deg C/54F. It was just over 24degC/76F last Saturday :astonished:

Well, according to my Garmin I hit 100% heat acclimation the day before yesterday or was it three days ago. Anyway, I still feel like I’m at 0%.

112 miles and over 7k ft of elevation gain.
Made a big oopsie, stopped at a c-store with about 40 miles to go and bought a cookie and some water. when I was finished I threw my garbage away. Got home and couldn’t find my ID and CC. :grimacing: Drove back to the C-store, couldn’t find it. Decided to dig through the garbage can I used, after emptying the entire thing, I found them, on the bottom.

Was gonna do a short ‘productive’ threshold workout to start with(1hr) but after about 5 minutes of the first interval I realized that would be a bad choice if I wanted to have the last 5 hours be even remotely enjoyable. Cut it back and just rode Z2 for the most part, doing threshold power for the climbs.

I’m glad you found them! Thank goodness the trash hadn’t been emptied.
