Where did you ride OUTSIDE today (2022)

Believe it or not this is the middle of Phoenix. I live just off some of these trails that criss cross the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. It’s all fairly rocky and mountain bikes are the best option. A gravel bike with nobs can navigate most trails, however, picking the line is critical with no suspension. Shaw Butte in the background of the first two pictures.

If you know how to connect with the canal system you can avoid roads and get in some peaceful riding. A lot of the system is paved. Some is really smooth packed gravel and some has both like pictured. Squaw peak in the background.

Nice, its like Leeloo falling from the skies into your backyard  Love the new forum name!

Haha! Yeah a team issue came up. It’s complicated. Name change was not necessary but, I feel better with a completely unrelated name…

Thanks, a lot closer for you than me! Still, 90 minutes on a Sat or Sun morning is close enough! Mosquito Ridge is a little closer but had a major fire a couple months ago.

I’ve got this idea I need to climb White Mountain and have my wife meet me at the top, so we can see the Bristlecone pine forest with the oldest trees on earth. Started my bucket list over at Pjamm and backfilled it with climbs dating back to 2016, plus stuff I’ve done recently like Mt Shasta and Mt Hamilton:

and figure I need to do Diablo North & South in one ride before I’m ready for White Mountain out of Bishop, CA, or Mt Lemmon in AZ. Not sure I’ll ever be ready for Onion Valley or Horseshoe Meadows…

Maybe it is time for a separate thread on climbing bucket list? I’m still not done making my list.

That’s funny. I’ve been waiting to see if this was a new Ronaldo lover or the old one, but was trying not to ask.

Same as I did when some guy named WindWarrior joined the forum.

Pics are a good tell  At least with KorbenDallas you can click thru to account and see activity including posts a week or two ago that were (as I recall) under the older name. I was forced to create a forum only account, because of how I originally created my forum account, and used the same pic for some continuity :+1:

Now that I’m in for. All six of the old Everest Challenge climbs out of Bishop for starters…

That White Mountain climb was brutal when I did that event back in 2009. I think oxygen deprivation killed any detailed memory. You should do it, it’s “fun”.

Mt Rose west side has always been my favorite.

Right?! Good list of the big ones out of Bishop:

Need more gearing, 33x33 (on bike) or 33x36 (have cassette) at 3W/kg isn’t enough for some of the long 10+% grades…

An hour spin on the bike this morning to get back into a rhythm. There’s a local competition to photograph the local “Big 5”, which is not the same Big 5 as Africa’s, fortunately as that would make my pre-dawn rides a bit more, um, interesting. In my area, the Big 5 are deer, hedgehog, fox, ermine, and squirrel, which are a bit, er, tamer, though that probably adds to it being hard to find them as they don’t like being seen. I’ve seen all of them, with the fox and deer most common. The rarety of squirrels here is weird to me because I’ve always lived in places where they are plentiful and easy to spot. I have seen ermine, which was a confusing sight at first because I knew it wasn’t a fox, a badger, or a squirrel, so I had to look up what I had seen. Not on the list is badger, but may be that’s because they aren’t spotted at twilight and the idea of the competition is to get people out at twilight and enjoy the outdoors at a reasonable time.

With that said, here’s a pic from about 5:45a this morning.

A train came by, as expected, but my phone slipped in my gloved hand as I took the picture, so I’m surprised it’s this good. This is my “I’m in a typical HO-scale model train diorama” spot closest to home.

That was this morning, which was a ride. Yesterday, though not a ride but maybe an interesting pic from a 3.5mi run elsewhere (taken at 5:15a with the Louvre as my turnaround for a preflight run during an overnight layover in Paris).

And the day before yesterday, a 5km run in NE Morocco with homeless dogs (there are several in this pic, most are on the beach, and to my left out of the frame are several more large dogs but that pic was darker) and, in the second pics, what I figure are storks making their nests wherever they want cuz they’re big.

First frost of fall this year. I’ll ride later

That looks ice and not grass frost, its a good call :+1:

This is the time of year where we can get spots of ice on the roads. Worse, spots of ice where there are wet leaves on the road in shady spots. Wet leaves and icy wet leaves will take you down faster than a Mike Tyson roundhouse!!

Definitely. The worst I’ve been caught out was down here in the mild (the roads are less well treated than back home). Rain was falling so I thought it’d be mild enough, wrong! A rural road had frozen over night and the rain falling on to it near instantly froze too. It was like marbles :open_mouth:

In between long and likely not useful post on training and clinical studies to TR forum, managed to get out for a couple hours today with a buddy. Nice ride and a quick coffee stop.

Because why not stop for coffee right? Am sure there will be a study out tomorrow showing that coffee stops prevent all gainz and actually turns a productive ride into a fitness killer.

Since that is inevitable, I also had a cookie.

I’ve also decided to no longer post about training and have taken up a new hobby. One which will occupy all my extra time!!

In other news, nice day here. Enjoy some photos of our trees and clouds:

Winter is heading our way so wanted to get out for a ride. Couldn’t decide what to ride, so decided to do road and single track with my gravel bike. 35 miles, 3,400 ft climing… about 80% pavement and 20% dirt.

Not the best pics and the leaves are losing there color, but it will be all white on Sunday.

:joy: don’t say that! Frisbee golf is not a sport

I spent the afternoon searching for the 2nd lost wool dryer ball, and trying to negotiate a contract.

Then 2 hours on the bike. Was taking too long time to warmup, after 18 minutes getting out of time I decided to move todays (hard) workout to Friday, and do Fridays (easier) workout today. Mission accomplished. After dinner wife found 1 dryer ball hiding in sweat shirt, the other that went missing months ago is still MIA.

Another gorgeous ride during my Vegas vacation.

This time up and around Mount Charleston.

Amazing views and great climbing roads. Highest elevation I’ve ever been to on my road bike :sunglasses::smiley:

Hour easy today. Not worth posting WKO5 screen shots and no new pictures. Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

In other news, when our wool dryer ball goes missing, we know the puppy has gone into the dryer and nabbed it.

(Heh - this was actually yesterday but I never hit “send”)

It’s a beautiful Friday here in East PA. Temps in the low 60s and sunshine.

To ruin that bucolic atmosphere, instead of a nice comfy Zone 2 ride, I decided to do hill repeats!!! 6:02 was my best effort of the day. That’s a PR but still haven’t broken 6 min. I need to go out and absolutely blast ONE climb on fresh legs and see how far under 6:00 I can get.

Here are some WKO5 charts and some pictures from the local grass strip airport. Couple old tractors parked out front. Who doesn’t like old farm machinery right?
