What's Going on at Stages? Ceases Operations, Apr 2024

Their sales and administration office in Victoria Washington (1220 Main Street, Ste 400) now lists as being ‘P.I.E. Management, LLC’.

Foundation Fitness seems to be a division of Stages Cycling (It’s their ‘spin bike’ division). They share the address in Boulder (5335 Sterling Drive). Stages Cycling is listed as being delinquent as of June 2019.

606 SE 9th Ave, Portland, OR 97214, once Stages principal address, seems to be Professional Roof Consultants, Inc. now?

It’s the other direction; Stages was spun off Foundation.

I’ve read it both ways. I also saw a disgruntled owner of an SB20 who was so angry (and childish?) that they ‘threw it into a dumpster’.

While I was about to do that with a gen 1 Peloton bike we had, I got to second level support, and got a fix that the first level either couldn’t do (more likely) or wouldn’t do. I guess it depends on what the issue was, but it seems a waste to effectively destroy it. shrug

If it was the power meter that failed, isn’t a pair of Assioma’s ‘cheaper’ than tossing an expensive bike?

Shimano should buy them at least stages could get the duel crank working.

I am gutted I have two stages power meters and I think they are great, I just hope they carry on working ok. Makes sense for giant to sue them knowing they will break them and buy them on the cheap.

The problem with the SB20 is that it intrinsically uses power match with the power meter cranks to control power in ERG mode. So if the power meters on the cranks die, then you’ve lost ERG mode - you might also lose resistance mode (I haven’t tried using it in resistance mode with dead power meter batteries).

Yikes! That’s like the Peloton bike. If Peloton dies or is bought out and the purchaser drops their servers, that’s the end of the bike. The screen is proprietary and the whole thing is so focused on that ‘cloud’ server that if the system dies, it’s kind of done, except for maybe as a really expensive dumb trainer. Hmm, would an Edge head unit drive the SB20? At least the Edge, or other head unit would be able to connect to a different power source (Assiomas, etc).

I had a LeMond spin bike and thought of ‘educating’ it. Drilling the flywheel for a magnet, using power pedals, but the resistance was the big issue. It would mean the definition of ‘DIY ERG Mode’, having to roll your own, cranking that knob and watching the power output, effectively lobotomizing the bike, or doing a brain transplant. (But that LeMond bike was so solid. It was distressing to sell it)

It seems that their spin bikes might survive the collapse. (Maybe they could sell the IP and all to Peloton for a Gen 4 Peloton bike)

that’d be an interesting experiment alright, I have an SB20 and think it’s great but am wondering what I’d do to continue using it if some of the electronics fail…

Please try it for the benefit of the larger community :grinning:

Certainly! As soon someone sends me a free pair of Assiomas😉

Anyone see or hear any updates on the status of Stages yet? I am itching for a dual sided power meter and there are some smoking deals on the Stages stuff right now!

Nothing I’ve seen (I post it as soon as it shows in my feeds).

The deals are smoking because nobody wants it, and for good reason

Between recalled Shimano cranks and a non-supported power meter, there is ZERO reason to buy a Stages unit right now.

Where are all the deals? If the deals were so amazing, one could risk someone else picking up Stages and supporting the product further. You’d probably be without warranty though.

Until someone one does pick up the pieces, I’d consider anything purchased “as is” no support, no warranty. That said there’s a lot out there that just works so :man_shrugging:t2:

Same thing: ‘OUT OF STOCK’, and ‘Verifying you are a human’.

Giant is making a bid to buy the remnants of Stages for $20M…

Somebody needs to breathe life back into the stationary bike biz. We have a new gym coming to town and to date they’ve populated the other locations with Stages power meter bikes. Our current gym has Stages SC3 power meter bikes.

If this does happen, I expect the SB20 to be killed off due to the Swift Ride + the SB20 is a beast to have to ship to individuals. It, or something like it, probably works for gyms / spin studios which are buying multiples at once and need something that is built like a tank.

But what I would really like to see is a Swift Ride like frame in aluminum with an industry standard bottom bracket & power meter cranks, with a seat post that has fore-aft adjustability so you can both match riding position + make sharing with a partner a realistic possibility.

I’ve been looking for a discount on Stages SC3 but the prices seem to ignore that the company went out of business. Any gym owners out there care to explain if/how you monetize unsupported Stages equipment?
