Having used Conti 4000’s with great results I was going to switch to the 5000s. Our shop guys say they have seen really poor wear with them, which seems to be contrary to many here. Just got some new wheels and decided to go with Vittoria Corsa after using the Zaffiro with good results. Man, the Corsas are really, really incredible! They are so supple, the tracking and the ride is beyond anything I’ve used in the past. Check them out for road.
Currently running 30mm Schwalbe Pro Ones (tubeless) on the road bike and really liking them. Not as fast as when I had turbo cottons, but enjoying the extra width and puncture protection. Outside of outright racing (got race wheels with 23mm gp5000’s for that) I doubt I’m going back under 30mm again.
For gravel I use 38mm Gravel King SK’s and like those. Used them in all sorts of terrain/ conditions and they haven’t flinched. Only hiccup was an errant rail spike in Oregon that tore the entire sidewall and onto the tread, but can’t imagine many tires I want to ride that would survive that.
Above all those I use Panaracer Pasela Protites on my commuter, and they’re my favorite tires in the world. Never a flat through years of commuting on terrible city roads, and they still roll half decently. You can pry them from my cold dead hands.
Honorable mention for Michelin Pro4 Endurance V2’s I use on the TT bike’s training wheels. Great rolling resistance for a tire with bead to bead flat protection, and feel pretty nice.
I don’t ride the road anymore, but when we did, Vittoria tires were the choice.
MTB: I’ve been back and forth between Maxxis and Vittoria.
For Vittoria, I was running the Barzo/Mezcal combo in the XC/Trail casing. They seemed to roll really fast, but the grip in loose seemed to either be there or not. Drift was happening alot.
Switched back to an Ardent/Ardent Race combo and it feels more grippy.
I’ve ran the Agarros front and back on a larger travel bike, and those were good tires.
I want to try the Aspen tires, just to see how good they handle the loose over hard pack that my local trail has most of the summer.
Hump
I have Schwalbe Pro One 30mm on my endurance road bike.
Cannot love them enough, i switched from 23 mm Continental 4 Season to this one and my control and comfort increased significantly. No flats up to now, ~3000 km now. I will order them again. I used them a lot in rain but also above 30 °C temperatures as well.
I will order them again when i need to replace the tires.
On my TT bike I’m running a 25mm Schwalbe Pro One on my tubeless disc and a 25mm Mitchelin Power TT clincher on the front. I had wanted to run it all Vitorria Corsa Speed but I couldn’t (neither could the lbs) get the tubeless tyre to seat. I also thought about a 23mm front, some claim that has aero advantages, but psychologically I prefer the extra 2mm of rubber (it probably makes bu@@er all difference in reality )
On the road bike I’m running 25mm 5000TLs on my winter and summer wheels, I just liked that they were easy to seat and have been robust. I ran Schwalbe Pro ones before on it but they seemed to be a bit less robust (certainly for a mate anyway).
I’ve been running Sworks Turbos(not the cottons). I’m already on my second set and started to see cracks where the tread meets the sidewall. This also happened with my first set but with a bit more mileage. This happened on all 4 tires…starting to think its because of me!
I’m starting to consider changing over to Turbo Cottons but I’m worried about getting punctures(although, strangely enough, I’ve never had one!). Also looking at GP5000 but I see a lot of people saying that they’re too harsh.
Don’t know where to go really!
I’ve tried other tyres but I just keep going back to the GP5K TLs.
Corsa Speeds are noticeably faster for me but are ridiculously fragile. Everything else seems slower.
The new Specialized S Works Turbo T2/T5 tyres have been out a while now but haven’t seen any ride reviews yet. Has anyone got these or the 2Bliss (more durable version) yet? Interested as an alternative to GP5000 STRs which have been pretty good for me, but lack some Road feel…
Depends what bike and wheels.
On the good road bike, still with summer wheels, I’m running a 25mm 5000TL on the back and a 25mm 5000TR on the front. When I eventually switch it to winter wheels, they are set up with a TL on the front TR on the back.
On the TT bike its got a tubeless 25mm Schwalbe Pro One on the rear (all the lbs had) and a 25mm Clincher Mitchelin Power TT on the front.
The gravel bike is wearing tubeless 40mm WTB Raddlers
The commuter road bike is wearing a 25mm Mitchelin Pro 4 Endurance Clincher on the back and a 23mm Mitchelin Endurance Pro 4 Clincher on the front (the front fork with mudguards won’t let me go any larger). It was a 25mm Pro 4 until last night when I put mudguards on
I have GP5000 with latex tubes on TT and summer bike. I have just got a pair of 25mm Michelin Power TT to go on the er…TT bike. Will be interesting to see if they are quicker than the GP5000. They should be according to the data but will be interesting to see in real life. Winter bike - Vittoria Zaffiro. Cheap and v robust. Slow…but who cares. I can use a shorter route for training.
I put a pair on a couple of weeks ago. 28mm, S-Works Turbo 2BR 2Bliss Ready T2/T5 - that’s a mouthful.
I have Hunt Aero30 rims and in the past a SWorks Rapidair tire was impossible to get off. I had to cut them off. So i was reluctant to give these new versions a try, but i really like the tread pattern, the weight, and look of the new tires.
Not cheap, but i actually think i found a unicorn. The tires mounted without needing a tire lever. Seated with just a track pump and not requiring a blast of air. And then held pressure without sealant for over 24hrs before just a bit had gone. Amazing.
I had a weekend coming up of meeting a friend and riding the Finestre, Sestriere, and Iseran so i thought it would be a great test. Semi shitty roads, a long stretch of gravel (top 8km of the Finestre are gravel) and a ton of long descents over the weekend. I had the tires filled with Orange Seal, and i run my tires 80/83 psi. I have to admit, i didn’t feel them at all. Which i think is the whole point. Grip was great - my friend descends without abandon and it’s nice to chase and hold someone’s line. The tires were definitely confidence inspiring and let me do what i wanted.
Uphill, again i noticed nothing. Great tires, fast and smooth rolling, and lighter than my previous GP5000 TLs. No idea what the rolling resistance comparison is to benchmarked GP5000 TLs but it doesnt matter. The tires are awesome.
Oh, and the Piemont alps also get a thumbs up recommendation too
Thanks for the review… I was afraid about the mounting part as with a lot of tyres it is a nightmare.
Btw I live in Piemonte, in The North-western part, and congrats on doing those 3 ascents this past weekend… the first real cold of the colder season arrived, it was 4 degrees when I left home Saturday and Sunday morning… I can’t imagine up at the pass… Saturday though was stunning
Thanks for the write-up!
