I want to clarify what happened here.
Dr. Coggan was banned for willfully ignoring moderator requests. While he has an immense amount of knowledge and experience to offer, it was unfortunately often done in a manner that did not exemplify the forum guideline of “Be excellent to each other”. While he was careful not to directly attack people with words, he subtly did so with tone and indirect implication in a repeated manner.
In response to flags from the community that his posts were demeaning and harmed/discouraged forum participation, we engaged with him through forum moderation efforts to ask him to analyze whether his tone and treatment of others exemplified “Be excellent to each other”. He ignored repeated requests to engage in that dialogue and instead kept posting on the forum. We gave a further warning that continuing to ignore moderator requests would result in a ban. He continued to ignore, so he was banned.
This is not the first time he has been banned for similar issues, and this is further evidence that our updated rules about not allowing a banned user to return are good to have in place.
Dr. Coggan has an immense amount of value to offer any community, and in particular one such as this. However, it does not matter how much value you can offer if it comes at the cost of respectful dialogue and overall community “health”.
I hope that clears this up.
