This is a good one because I had no idea. Is it Muh-tay-ew? Mah-tyew? Mat-chew? Something else?
Middle one is closest.
This might be more believable if you weren’t posting here.
Why? This is a triathalon forum.
Maybe we can all agree that triathletes aren’t cyclists ![]()
This is the unpopular opinions thread tho…
Whether you believe me or not isn’t the slightest bit important.

See, I think that sounds like the third one, but someone above said the second. This is why I asked. It seems there is agreement it’s not “Math-you”, but there are lots of ways to pronounce Mathieu, so I was trying to see if there was any definite “this is the way his mother says his name”.
I always thought it was “matt-chew”. Which I always found amusing because my aunt used to always pronounce my name that way and my name is spelled “Matthew”.
I resemble that remark.
It was much better when I was younger and called “Elite” in AusCycling terms. It didn’t matter if you were A,B,C or D grade or maybe never even raced… “Elite” thankyouverymuch ![]()
En Francais? He’s Dutch!

Regardless if we go for French or Dutch pronunciation it’s 100% not Matthew!
The discussion of MVDP name has strong, “it’s pronounced gif” vibes.
He definitely pronounces it like the French do. There’s no “eu” sound in English, hence all the “ew” and “oo”
There’s no “ch” in there. But then again there’s no “ew” either.
My unpopular opinion is that Eddy Hoole is just misunderstood and people should get off his back.
Lol.
