I don’t know what HTFU means but I do think the first two points will play their roles. I went down the Short Power route and am just entering the final few weeks in the Crit speciality. Short Power was by far the hardest training block I’ve ever undertaken but it will toughen you up, fast!
I think the step up from Base to Build is really noticeable.
Also what you eat the day before can have an effect on your current ride especially if you are dieting. No one has mentioned that sleep quality and outside stressors also affect recovery and ride quality.
Which is never good advise without this disclaimer: Listen to your body and figure out if your limiters are mental or not. This is a long learning process and you will probably sometimes get it wrong. But just pushing through impossible workouts (especially if you’re also still figuring out your fractional utilization of vo2max, ftp testing accuracy, personal power profile, and fueling strategies) will negatively impact your training. Once you figured all this out: HTFU.
