Wattbike Atom ERG mode problem

Just to update, I called Wattbike customer service, they had me send them a video of the diagnostic screen whilst I was pedaling. Confirmed there was an issue with a sensor that needed replacing. Engineer came to my house a week later, replaced the faulty sensor and the issue is resolved.

The Engineer did comment that the sensor that needed replacing has been redesigned. Makes me think, anyone with an “early” Wattbike Next Generation will likely suffer the same issue further down the line. In my opinion Wattbike should be treating this as a recall and actively going out and swapping the old sensor to the redesigned sensor on affected units.

Not far off from pushing the button (now that the house is almost sorted).

Are you still happy with the Wattbike Tom? And is it still working well with Trainerroad in ERG mode?

For me it is between this and the Kickr bike. But frankly, I like the price of the Wattbike - and it seems to me like more tried and tested tech. Also in the UK the service seems great - and good used market when upgrading.

I bought a WB in May 2021 after struggling to decide between that and a Kickr bike. Very happy with my decision. I had a faulty sensor after 3 months but had it replaced by an engineer.

Works well with TR, Xwift and FulGaz. I have not really used the hub app. Saddle is OK for me but I know some need to change it.

Hi Paul,

I’ve not used both at the same time for a while as I’ve not been using zwift but never had issues when I did. I will try for my next workout and see.

I used 2 different devices, either iPad and iPad or iPad and Samsung phone.

If I remember correctly I had to connect the devices in the 4iiii app somehow and then the 4iiii just appeared as a device (remember you’re not looking for an extra wattbike when searching for the device in zwift/TR, just the 4iiii which will be bridging tmyiur wattbike)

Like I said I’ll try it again in the next few days and update you if I discover anything else to add.

Tom

Kind Regards

Tom

New ish watt bike owner here - just for the avoidance of doubt ERG in TR on watt bike is awful. Massive over and under runs. Like 100 watts over. My old kickr (5yrs old) was so much better / wish I hadn’t given my mate such a bargain.

Will try standard mode but not why I bought it.

Can’t seem to add a photo - but will try

Oh you can’t switch to resistance mode.

Literally wtf.

Not quite true - booted old MacBook with old version of TR and can switch - but not on iPhone or iPad.

But the gears don’t do anything

Avoid

It’s been OK in Erg for me … I try to get my cadence to whatever I’m aiming for in the work intervals about 5 or 10 seconds before the interval starts and then try to keep that cadence as the resistance ramps up. Takes about 3 seconds.

If I really wanted or needed to run it in resistance mode, the workaround is to clone a version of the workout in Zwift’s workout creator, do it there in resistance mode, and then associate it to the original workout in TR.

As I said … a workaround.

Interesting / my cadence is pretty steady…

Are you on android? I wonder if that’s worth a try - or pc…

No issues for me, erg is snappy and smooth. If I really lose concentration before I big interval I can push it over maybe 50 watts but it comes back in line almost immediately and that’d be the same on any trainer. works great!

Galaxy S10 phone. :+1:

Are you also on android Tom?

Yes, I do sometimes use my iPad however and don’t have any issues on that either.

I’m a new user too.

Keeping my cadence steady seems to help massively. If I try and follow the power then it goes all over the place!

I’m just about to return my Atom because the variance in wattage makes it unusable with TrainerRoad. I’m using the latest wattbike, dell windows i5 laptop and on advice from wattbike I’m using Ant+ to connect. The power variance is sometimes over 100w but it’s the inconsistencies that drove me mad… anyone have any bright ideas before I send it back and revert to my kickr which was rock solid please?

Just to make sure we cover this base, are you talking about the Kickr with “ERG Mode Power Smoothing” Enabled (ON) position vs Disabled (OFF)?

The kickr was in erg mode and probably did have power smoothing on but honestly, the Atom literally varies as much as 50-75w above the below the target power. Cadence is consistent throughout. At one stage tue power dropped from 260w to zero and then up to over 500w … it’s been back to wattbike once for sensor replacement and has had an engineer out once too (it’s 6.5 months old).

OK, so at the very least, it’s useful to adjust expectations a bit. When you turn off the ERG smoothing on the Wahoo, it gets far more bumpy and most people think it’s broken at first. But it is telling a more accurate story than the falsely smooth one that Wahoo default too (and drives me crazy  )

Anyway, every trainer will have some amount of deviation from a power target under normal use. I have no idea if what you are seeing is appropriate for the Atom. Hopefully Wattbike will get you sorted one way or the other. That or any other Atom users here may be able to share their workouts for comparison.

All my rides are on my Atom (2nd Gen) … I think they should be visible here:
