Waking up in the middle of the night and trying to fall back asleep, how do you do it?

So big C being cancer but big D as in dick?

I’ve tried a few different saddles over the past few years. Wouldn’t hurt to keep experimenting.

What the urologist stated for me after various tests and intake diaries was I drink a bit too much water. Not a dangerous amount but enough that I can cut back without creating health risks. The drugs were a means to see if it helps allow the bladder to fill more.

Not what the wife says…

Diabetes

Ah, was never a thought

I’ve had luck with the breathing thing. Every time you find yourself worrying about stuff you can’t fix right now anyway, don’t beat yourself up about it and just get back to focusing on your breaths. If necessary, you can count them, but that sometimes leads to worrying about getting the count wrong, so maybe just count to one on inhale and two on exhale, then repeat.

Probably helps to practise this during the day as well.

For anyone that’s a very light sleeper or easily wakes up, I can’t recommend the Marpac Dohm highly enough. I bought one as the white noise loop on my phone wasn’t working and it’s just amazing.

So, i am 51, in the past i have played rugby, done kickboxing, judo to competition level winning medals at national competition level, like beer and wine, play hard, make sure i dont work as hard, always loved cycling and now enjoy it lots cos my joints are a bit knackered. I like to think i am a regular bloke. Why is this important? Cos 4 years ago if you had told me i would be doing 20 mins mindfulness at night time, before bed to help me get to sleep i would have laughed in your face! BUT!!! It works…its not new age hippy s…It does work. And when i wake up to go to the loo, i return to bed, a little bit mindfulness and i am zonked out. Forget the medication!!! Thats treating a symptom. Treat the cause! Learn to turn your mind to focus on the moment. On the now. The thoughts will come and go and you will sleep the sleep of the dead. Try it if you dare!!

When is the last time you had a sleep study? You may need more cpap pressure. I’m a sleep tech. Or you could be having leg issues, Like periodic limb movements. It’s like restless legs to a degree but restless legs when you are awake. PLMs is during sleep. But like other people said, once you haven’t fallen back to sleep in 30 mins to a hour you should do something else to get your mind off of it. Something relaxing. So you stop focusing and stressing about going back to sleep.

One thing that might sound a bit silly, but has helped me a lot (I get up as well 1-2 times a night for the loo, especially if I ride a lot and drink a lot) is to not stress about sleep.

The more I think about how I cannot fall asleep, the worse it gets.

If I lay down and cant fall asleep, ill get the iPad and actively watch something for a bit, then fall asleep.

Other than that, regularity works wonders.

Also, do you eat right before bed or such?

yep, relax. Accept it. Sounds stupid but simply accept it. The more you stress about sleep the worse it gets. And if you’re really awake with not feeling sleepy at all, grab a book and read a little. And accept the situation. And there is no need for uninterrupted sleep, this is a fairly new thing actually which came with industrial revolution.

Great thread, just went through a serious round of sleep issues, through all of 2021. I’m 59 and a recreational rider. I could fall asleep quickly, but I was getting up 4-6x per night to pee, sometimes not being able to get back to sleep. Woke up tired every morning, even though I had “slept” for 8 hours. Had at least two rounds of severe fatigue, resulting in weeks off the bike.

Root cause was an enlarged prostate. I had lots of other tests done: sleep study (no apnea), blood work, cardio (stress test) that were negative or inconclusive. Treating the enlarged prostate has done the trick. Sleep is getting more routine (getting up 1-2x per night, but should get better after last treatment).

When I do wake up, I too use the deep breathing or counting trick if I can’t immediately fall asleep.

The surprise for me in all this was how the need to pee was causing all of these other physical issues: pee too often, don’t get enough sleep, don’t recover from exercise, crash from fatigue. BPH (what I had) is very treatable; it sucks getting old.

I struggled with this a fair amount after a particulary turbulent period in my life…would wake up, fixate on my issues and not sleep. Not a good cycle…

I began listening to the radio as a distraction and eventually get back to sleep…which was fine when I was single, but my wife was not a huge fan, but she endured.

I now use bluetooth sleep earbuds…put on a podcast, set the sleep timer and doze off. if I wake up, I just restart the process. I only use one earbud at a time, so if / when I wake up a few hours later, I just swap out the the other bud and let the original recharge.

And my wife is much happier now, too…

I do the same thing. Sports science podcasts that interview academics seem to work best for me. I actively avoid podcasts where the hosts are too energetic / engaging.

I usually put on what ever YouTube reccomends but I know what you mean about some podcasts hosts being too stimulating. Lol, though when its actually something I want to be stimulated by/ listen to I quickly drift off to sleep :open_mouth:

thanks @Jeramy, this magnesium advice is a killer! I took two dose last night and it was the first time i slept like a dead in the past 6 month. I was always looking after hydration and fueling, but the sleep issue had always haunted me in the middle of night. Now it’s the matter of magneisum, which i’ve never paid attention to, or i should i’ve never heard of. Thanks bro!

I’ve been using this for weeks and it’s made a massive difference (that my partner can notice too). I don’t wake up for the loo. I know you are saying you are chilly but I’d recommend trying
