I actually don’t like the blips. I know they are popular, but I can never find them and always have to push more than once to get them to activate. I think it’s easier to just swipe the screen with my finger. I’ve also tried them for shifting and find it’s easier to just push the lever.
I never knew Garmin had a remote like that (although tbh never really investigated that much). That’s neat.
stares in using a Hammerhead while running Shimano Di2
Lol; I strictly run mechanical on everything, so the remote is my go-to for keeping hands on the bars while perusing my various screens. The programmable blips on the Di2 are nice, though. If battery life on the Karoo2 was close to what I get out of my 530 I’d consider it as an alternative.
Seems like RGT could add more bots automatically to make courses have a certain number of riders. Unless you’re chatting with people it wouldn’t make a ton of difference.
Maybe they could wire up the bot to use ChatGPT to respond to people
Remote Garmin control is not worth the whole price of a Di2 system but it is awesome once you have it. My use of the lap button is up significantly which really helps with non programmed interval work and it makes flipping back and forth among screens a breeze.
For those unfamiliar, each lever has one button (on the top) and each allows 2 actions (press and press and hold) so you can have 4 actions. Here is what you can choose from:
What Are the Options That the Di2 Buttons Can Perform on an Edge Device?
The options that can be selected are:
- Next Page
- Previous Page
- Record Lap
- Start/Stop Timer
- Turn Back Light On
- Show Map
- Show Compass
- Show Elevation Profile
- Show Lap Summary
- Show Virtual Partner
This is where psychology comes in, it does matter to me. There are plenty of bots but not many real people.
I thought it didn’t matter to me, but it does seem to. As for RGT, unless there’s a large group or event, then when there are people it still feels like an isolated void. On Zwift there’s more interaction and liveliness all the time.
If only there was a button to disable live partner!
It is one of my gripes with SRAM eTap: it doesn’t allow my to repurpose buttons to switch pages and the like. I’d immediately shell out money for wired or wireless blips to be able to flip through pages without having to take my hands off my handlebars. Or switch on lights. (Lights are AFAIK not supported by Wahoo either, bummer.)
To be fair, that snafu is entirely on Shimano.
Did you hear about the open source solution? If you jailbreak your Hammerhead, you can install an app that allows you to control your Di2 drivetrain.
There is now a workaround for Di2 on the Hammerhead.
Thanks guys….and yes, I realize it was all on Shimano, I just saw an opportunity for a joke.
As for the side load option….
Of course, this also means there’s a level of geekiness required to install this. There is no easy button here, but, for those that want their Di2 shifting back, it’s here
Now again, this isn’t a ‘hard’ install, but it does require a level of geek that you’re comfortable with a command line
Yeah, I’m out…
I’m sure it is relatively straightforward, but it just isn’t that important to me.
As much as I’ve tried, I’ve never been able to get hooked in by RGT or Zwift or Rouvy. For the most part my sessions are an hour long so for me it’s pretty easy to just watch tv or YouTube for an hour.
I’ve had a few times where due to bad weather and prepping for long races I had to ride many hours indoors. At that time I was trying RGT. It was fine but for with or without people it didn’t matter
I had a 530 and it was frustrating. Either the screen worked on its own, or it didn’t react well to touch. The 1030 seems a lot better, but the hood buttons on Di2 are genius! I wouldn’t care about the brand now so much if the screens can show me what I really need when I’m riding. I have generally two screens that I use, one for Di2 (battery, gears, and basics) and one for ‘regular riding’ (speed cadence, basics). But the hood buttons allow for easier access to maps, virtual partner, etc… Give me hood buttons that work, I’ll be happy.
Touchscreen 530? Did you mean 830? I really like my 530 except for random sensor dropouts from time to time, which seems to be linked to my phone connection somehow. Anyway, re. Wahoo my Kickr17 is still going strong, albeit with a couple of belt changes and I did like my v1 Tickr until the strap died and I couldn’t seem to get a replacement and bought a Garmin hr strap instead.
I only use Strava for segments. Now that they’re on Zwift it is less likely that I’ll pay for premium again.
Was it the 830? It seems so long ago. I think what helped it was the screen protector I bought off Amazon. It seemed to make the screen less skittish.
I had an ANT+ only Garmin that worked no matter what. I joked that it would probably survive a nuclear war. I could just throw that thing on and no water, no nothing, and just rip on the bike. Inside, outside, it didn’t matter. It just worked.
Until it didn’t. I swapped batteries, nope. I swapped straps, nope. Took it apart and found so much grossness in the case behind the circuit card in it. I’ve used Garmin bands ever since. I did have a Tikr because somehow I left my Garmin behind for an out of state ride. Needed something, also left my Edge. Only thing available was that Wahoo strap in the whole area. It worked for a while nut after a few months started going out and back in during rides so I tossed it in the drawer. It was cheap, needed in a pinch, and served its purpose. I was kind of disappointed, but moved on. Use what works, and works for you. I did inherit an older Garmin monitor too, and it worked for another 3 or 4 years. It died, swapped batteries and it still didn’t work, so I got my monies worth out of it.
If you can get stuff fixed, or better yet fix it yourself then I’m all in. I hat shipping huge things back and forth because of a design flaw or they refuse to send me the parts. I broke a pinch bolt on the crank on my Neo Smart. They wanted me to send back the bike for the bolt. Seriously? It’s just a bolt. I bought a machine screw and fixed it myself. Sorry for the rant, but WE should be able to fix more things OURSELVES rather than shipping huge stuff around the planet.
That was a satirical reference to being a startup with no money.
Compensation will likely be some combo of equity / options / salary at some point but we’re bootstrapping and we’re all doing it as a labor of love right now.
