Will most certainly be eye bleeding pricing associated with any/all of that elec-tech.
Like LiveValve, it will be years before it trickles down to “practical” levels, if it ever does. All fun to see progress like this, but it doesn’t likely apply to the great public anytime in the near term.
Interesting, was wondering recently why a lot of places were OOS for Speedplays. If I caught wind of them being pulled from market I’d stock up on everything I could find. Loathe to go back to any other pedal.
There’s float and then there’s free float. Speedplay will feel like they have loads more float than any other common road pedal because there’s no on-center. Most people looking for more float really want low near-center centering resistance. No one really wants/needs more than maybe 10deg of float. Speedplays have no centering mechanism or center feel, which is their benefit and criticism.
It’d be nice if speedplay had an on-center pocket that’d open up over some given lateral load to give it that centered feel
The reason why I like Speedplays is the absence of a centered feel. With Zeroes, you can set the rotation limit in each direction for each foot, and get zero load through that range. I use a fairly narrow range, and rarely if ever hit the limits, even standing. But I can feel and see the rotation through the pedaling cycle.
Mechanically not so easy to implement - would require a way to adjust and set the “centered” position. This is accomplished by rotating the cleat in other pedals, which isn’t possible in this case.
Weird. Ive been running a few x-series sets from the early 2000s. Cant say ive lubed them more than twice a year. Bearings feel perfect. The ti set probably has 75k on them. Im really happy with their durability. Other than replacing the metal “x” part of the pedals once, mine have been pretty maintenance free.
Yeah, this is such a big plus for Shimano pedals that have been maintenance-free for me. On the MTB side I prefer Crankbrothers pedals, and I reckon I’ll like Speedplays. Hopefully the rumors are true. I, at least, will wait for the release.
I’m definitely jealous. My Speedplays are the second-most worked on part of my bike, I’d say. When riding in dry they’re pretty ignorable, but a couple hours in the wet seems to pull the grease right out of them. Officially, here are the intervals:
I emailed Wahoo about availability/future prospects for the Speedplay Frog pedals, and have included their response below. I realize the Frogs are not everyone’s jam, but after stories about radio silence from Wahoo re: Speedplay, it seems like it is at least possible now to find out whether your pedals will ever return, so that’s something?
“Thanks for reaching out to Wahoo customer support. Wahoo is not moving forward with the Frog pedal line. We are out of stock of all pedals and cleats and there are no current plans to replenish the stock. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
