Using TrainerRoad for NICA Devo Advanced Riders

I’m the head coach of a NICA devo team of ~100 riders (7th & 8th graders). We already separate out an advanced group of riders who are motivated to race and capable of training at a higher level.

We’ve got a solid foundation for:

  • Learning to ride for fun, enjoyment and general health
  • Skills progression from beginner to advanced
  • Group separation based on skills and general aerobic endurance
  • Positive race culture based on individual performance

We currently follow a training plan created by a USAC level 3 coach several seasons ago. It’s phased reasonably well. The issue is that plan is pretty stale and static at this point. It doesn’t adapt, progress dynamically, or account for individual variation. And it doesn’t allow the most advanced riders to excel, thus nudging those kids to seek private coaching and training.

What I’m trying to figure out is if TrainerRoad can be used not just as an individual tool, but as an intelligent framework to modernize and guide training for the advanced group. I understand TR is exclusively an individualized training platform. But I’m curious if there’s a way to adapt it to a small, similarly capable, team based training tool.

I’m trying to avoid a static plan that has no flexibility. I’m also trying to avoid total individualization at the devo level, as that would be chaotic and not helpful.

Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

Hey @addds :slightlysmilingface:

Really cool you’re the head coach of a NICA devo team of ~100 riders! I was one of the first-generation NICA kiddos myself, hehe. It’s great to have seen the team grow exponentially over time. Such a great program.

TrainerRoad requires users to be 18+, so 7th and 8th graders aren’t eligible, unfortunately.

BUT, what you can do is use TR for your own training as a coach and use TR’s training philosophy (periodization, power-based zones, adaptive load) as a framework to modernize your team’s plan.

Thanks for pointing out the age eligibility. I definitely didn’t consider that.

I appreciate the response and recommendation.

Either way, I’ll have another great season riding with these kids!
