Unbound Gravel 2025

I’ll probably go with a thin wool short sleeve base layer under a summer jersey, arm warmers, windstopper long finger gloves, and thin windstopper vest. Vest can be unzipped from bottom to manage temp if needed. Arm warmers can be pushed down if needed. Toe covers for shoes and wool socks. I don’t think I’ve ever raced with knee warmers, but might break them out. My legs never feel cold, but the knees aren’t getting any younger and the cold makes em hurt a little more.

Sounds fantastic….hot & humid is my jam.

We get the best of both worlds. In the middle of a snow storm now, and by summer we’ve got 90’s and humid.

Back on the trainer tomorrow for me. I’m racing Sea Otter in 8 weeks and it just hit me I’m going to have to start driving to find some dry ground to get some time on the XC bike.

I don’t get heat training till July. If it’s 95 at unbound I’m screwed

But point taken.

Everyone will be… All the worrying about rain/mud/wind/etc., but the heat years are the years with the highest DNF rates by a big margin. So exposed and remote, can get really dangerous.

Yeah 2021 was a death march

I don’t use Training Peaks, so I couldn’t tell you.

If you are interested in tracking CTL, TSS, etc., intervals.icu is very easy integrate your data into and provides an easy way to see stress balance and ramp rate, etc. I just link it to strava and all data is pushed to intervals. Intervals is free or you can give a donation to support it.

My CTL is in the mid 90’s right now, up from mid 50’s at the beginning of the year when I started base. I’ve been hitting the volume pretty hard, but not much intensity and keeping the ramp rate under 10. I haven’t had any significant fatigue yet this year, but still respected my rest week last week. The build phase (starting in March) is where I usually start feeling it, so I plan to reduce my ramp rate as I add more intensity during build.

It’s on trainer road

I’m the opposite, 3-4 hard days a week. I get 8-10 hours a week on the bike. That’s all I have in doors

CTL? I’m not aware of CTL tracking in TR. TR does provide a 6 week rolling daily average of TSS, which is a similar way to track training load. I’m not sure why they don’t just include the traditional CTL and Stress balance stuff unless they couldn’t come to agreement with Training peaks on it’s use. TR uses many of their other metrics (IF, TSS, etc.) and they reference training peaks as the source, I assume the other stuff is theirs also.

Isn’t the 6 week rolling average the same as Ctl?

Similar, but CTL uses weighting so not just a simple average like TR. I honestly haven’t paid enough attention to the differences to see if CTL tracks better to fitness or not. It’s all just directional stuff that can help inform, I just start paying more attention to sleep and mood when my stress balance starts dipping into the red. I find TR does a nice job with red/yellow days based on acute (short term) stress, but intervals.icu does a better job tracking long term stress.

Maybe I’ll try that system

My targets are Race the Sun (would be AWESOME) but would be content with Midnight Club. Not going to make the lights/lenses mistake I did in 2023.

Just a friendly reminder to start thinking about lining up any equipment/supplies that might be in short supply as we get closer to spring. I’ve noticed Pathfinder Pro 47’s being out of stock at a lot of places, so I picked some up from my local specialized shop since they had some in stock. I also ordered some new wireless blips (getting low battery warnings on my current ones).

I’ll likely be running the same tires. My frame can squeeze the thunder burt’s it has but not much clearance for mud, nor are they as good for puncture resistance.

I have some pathfinders with a few hundred miles on them I’ll likely mount for unbound and mid south.

I need a 2.0 fast tire for the front and need to jam a 45mm something in the back.

If it’s muddy, you don’t want to be jamming anything in and need to leave clearance.

I have a MOG with advertised 50mm clearance, have race kings that work in the dry, am wondering if I’ll ultimately run the Pathfinder 47 (have a low mile set on the bike) or Thundero 48 unless there just isn’t a mud worry. Don’t think I’d need to go lower than that.

I’ve considered getting 2.1 Racing Ralph’s too as an option to give me a little more clearance than the Race King, and Schwalbe’s usually run narrow too.
