Yeah getting to. Consistent 3 will be an ongoing challenge for me. I can do very little swimming to put out an okay race time, I just think there’s a lot more to it than that; overall fitness, minimal injury risk, impact on bike leg, etc. I’ve never given myself true swim focus so I don’t know what I’m capable of.
Rodriguez talks about this particular point at the end of the talk I posted above. It’s worth thinking about imo.
So this past year, I’ve made the commitment to try and swim 3x a week, watched a fair amount of videos, and put in a focus to swim either hard with full rest, or try to get in some good work with minimal rest.
Form work doesn’t need to be easy, and can still be quite a workout. I focus on 4 drills personally, the catch up drill, fingertip drill, closed fist, and what was explained to me as a quick catch drill. I do a slightly different focus on the fingertip drill as I really use it to overemphasize my body roll and get really streamlined during the drill. The quick catch is just as it sounds, try to do the fastest stroke rate you can do… in control.
Slightly off-topic, but a quick question for you… my goggles (Zoggs Predator) occasionally leak when doing flip turns (they hardly ever leak other than that)… is this likely to be poor flip turn technique (head position or something like that)?
How old are your goggles? I find as mine age - usually about the 1 year mark they start to loose their fit and it starts by things such as this and progresses to the point of just leaking. Just a thought, if they are well used might be time for a fresh pair.
Agree with @MikeMckinney that one reason may be the seal is just wearing. Another possibility depends on when they leak during the turn. Is it the push off? If so, it is possible, for example, that your head may be at the wrong angle and/or you’re arms are not streamlined enough (and thus not “protecting” your face… or rather, preventing your face from creating drag).
There’s also the possibility the strap needs to be tightened. Another is that these specific goggles aren’t a perfect fit for you.
I’d start with nos 1 & 2, but it never hurts to have a second pair of goggles around, at least as a backup (and for indoor v outdoor use).
I’ve just checked & they’re about 14 months old. They’ve started to mist up as well (even when using an anti-fog solution), so think I’ll treat myself to a new pair.
Yes I think it’s during the push-off. They never really leak when pushing off after doing touch turns, so it may well be my head position during the push-off when flip turning. I’m swimming in a few hours so I’ll try and pay attention to this.
On the fogging, spit is a good anti-fog. Also, a tiny drop of water left in there works well. Don’t have so much that it bothers you, but enough so you can just shake your head while swimming. Sometimes, I need to fidget and fidget with my goggles and they will not stop fogging and other times, I put them on one time and they never fog for the workout. Once on and they’re not fogging/bothering me, I never remove them until the end of the workout. If you’re constantly taking them off at the end of sets, ask yourself why you’re doing that. Also, rinse them off after swimming to help prolong their life. Every bit helps, especially if you really like how they fit/feel.
And if the goggles are ‘losing their fit’, it’s likely the gasket. You can also try goggles without a gasket, like ‘swedes’ (for example: https://www.arenawaterinstinct.com/en_ch/swedix-mirror-goggle-smoke-silver-black.html ), though those aren’t for everyone. Or a different model or manufacturer. But 1.5yrs of 2-3 days/week will wear down the goggles.
Ordered some new goggles this morning… went for a swim during my lunch break… did a load of flip turns and my current goggles didn’t leak once! Sods law. I was due a new pair anyway
Thanks for the recommendation. I love the fit of the Zoggs Predator Flex though, they’ve served me well over the last few years, so I’ve stuck with them.
