TREK Checkpoint?

Great, thank you both. I think I’ll move the axle forwards a bit again as I’m finding myself wrestling the bike around hairpins as it tries to run wide since moving it most of the way back!

I live in Brussels Belgium and my shop has the 2022 Checkpoint SL 7 eTap model (only size 58) on display. I placed an order for one (size 56) with 21 September as the estimated date to pick it up.

Interesting, I wonder if it’s actually the 2021 model?

I haven’t seen anything for actual 2022 models.

Definitely 2022 model. ETap Force 2x, different cable routing (just in front of the headset, not the down tube), and different seat stay collar (“normal” with it just above the top tube).

Wow, crazy stuff then. Not sure what Trek is doing around the world???

What were your thoughts vs the Crux? Ive been on a Crux for 4 years now. Thinking of wider tires…

Did you notice what bottom bracket it has? Did they move the Checkpoint to standard threaded bottom bracket like they did on some of the other models?

I loved the Crux - probably my favorite bike - from a ride perspective. It was just so responsive and fun to ride. The only issue I had with it was the frame was slightly too small for me which made the front tire toe overlap a huge issue in tight turns for me (I wear a size 13). For road riding I can get away with a 58 frame from most manufacturers, but throw in some tight CX turns and there were way too many rubs and a few almost over the handlebar moments.

Tire size was never a limiter for me on that bike however, I want to say I had 37’ Riddlers on there without issue which was more than enough for our gravel out here in Eastern NE.

I went from a 58 Crux, to a 61 Boone to my Checkpoint. I only buy “like new” used bikes which is why I didn’t just jump to a larger Crux. I hated the Boone - in large part because coming off the Crux it was like riding a Penny-Farthing. Boone had tire clearance issues with anything over 35. Had I gone from the Crux to my Checkpoint, I probably would have had a similar impression of the Checkpoint but having the Boone as a buffer had me liking the Checkpoint from first ride.

yeah, moving that wheel backwards it a bit of a mind bender as you normally don’t have to think about where the rear of the bike is. You go from sitting almost on top of the pivot point to sitting further ahead of it. It’s like driving someone else’s pickup truck in a parking lot.
It does slow down the zigzag-y slalom type of handling as you’re moving the moment of inertia away from the pivot, but it doesn’t improve stability or change ultimate grip - it just lowers your ability to change the rate of turn.

Some bikes can fit wider tires if you use a smaller wheel, but Trek put a lot of room ahead of the tire and the chainstays are parallel, so don’t get a fitment improvement. I couldn’t fit a 54c x 29(700c) or 27.5 (650b) as it would barely clear and the casing would occasionally hit the side. If you’re hitting steep hills, I think the longer wheelbase might help with wheelie control and braking.

I did not check the bottom bracket or discuss it with my shop but think it is T47 in the 2022 models. This is based on several websites that all show a T47.

Tried to order a Trek Roscoe last week and was told 2023. Any one having success actually buying a new Checkpoint in Australia? Don’t know why they continue to spend so much on marketing.

I keep seeing the Trek Australia instagram promoting ads for the (previous model) Checkpoint. My blood boils every time I see it. Not sure why they bother.

No more seat mast cap! Finally.

Wonder when 12s shimano stuff will be out, i have an issue buying 11s stuff and it being outdated off the floor.

AFAIK only DA and Ultegra 12s have been announced, no word on GRX yet, and presumably that’s the way you’d want to go, although I know some guys who actually run Ultegra for their gravel rigs and only utilize GRX in the RD for capacity.

Prior to grx i had Ultegra RX, worked great.

Whats AFAIK?

As far as I know, sorry online acronyms can be a bit confusing lol

Appreciate the response. I love my Crux, but sometimes would like some more tire clearance. I’ll keep it for CX for sure (and road for that matter), but am going to look for something that will take 50+ I think…

Another new Checkpoint sighting.

This seems to be similar to the race bike from UB2021. I am guessing it is an SLR “race” version.

I was looking at a pic, it looks like they added frame bag bolts al la Salsa. Everything seems the same except for the front is 20mm further out with a shorter stem, the Domane style compartment, the aero /internal cable routing, and the seat post.

That pic is weird because it has a seat mast. That might be a pre-prod unit or SLR build.
