I keep saying it because it’s the truth. When you talk about ‘gender’, you’re talking about subjective identities which may not conform to reality. I’m talking about sex, which is objective reality, something that can be scientifically observed, measured, tested etc. You keep trying to reframe my terminology to insinuate I only believe in two ‘genders’ when I believe in zero ‘genders’.
I’m guessing you take issue specifically with the idea that so called ‘transgenderism’ is actually mental illness? If so, yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. ‘Transgenderism’ aside, the majority of them do suffer from mental illness, making my original statement correct.
As a pediatrician specializing in critical care I’ve seen first hand the mental health impact on these children when the come to me (hopefully) surviving a suicide attempt. Portraying their situation as a choice is just not correct. The risk they face from mental illness suicide homelessness and homicide is significant.
We can debate the “sports question” and it’s important AND consider the bigger picture these people face. I strongly disagree with defining the care as described above as child abuse.
I do think that would be the fairest solution thereby everyone can compete and be happy. I do worry that maybe in events like track sprinting especially, Cis Women could be at a disadvantage competing against someone who had been male for 18 years or so. It is important to protect Women’s sport.
Of course…and it is not a question that is easily answered. But we also need to remember that trans athletes are not just throwing on women’s kits and saying “let me compete as a woman” and the number of cases where a trans athlete is doing well, let alone dominating, is extremely small, bordering on minuscule.
But ultimately, there is no clean solution to this issue and I prefer to err on the side of inclusion. And yes, that means that a very small number of cis are going to be negatively impacted. And that sucks for them and I am entirely sympathetic to that.
But others are basically saying this….again, the number of trans athletes who are dominating is extremely small and the number of trans athletes who would be negatively impacted by exclusion is larger than the number of cis athletes negatively impacted.
This will never be a discussion worth having with certain people when they simply choose to be disingenuous.
It is a straight FACT that transgender women have, on a sports level, a physical advantage over XX women.
Anyone who disagrees with this simply chooses to not look at the facts. How can you have a discussion with people who ignore facts?
Worse, they will cloud the discussion by implying you don’t care about people if you say these things. They talk for the transgender community, and for women, and then they say “ask women” or ask “trans people”.
Sheer logical fallacy all the way around but logic has left the building a long time ago with this topic and has gotten into feelings. Meanwhile, womens’ sports suffer. And any woman who disagrees with transgender competing against women is attacked.
You say “ask women” and then when a woman responds you doubt it. Then you accuse someone of “mansplaining” for stating FACTS and expressing opinions.
I’m hoping that reading the article leads you to question your assumptions about data.
The number of cis women being negatively impacted is a very strange data analysis and from my perspective seems lacking in empathy.
It lacks an understanding of the cis women’s experience in society. The years of struggle to be treated of equal value.
It’s not just about sport, but the decisions made in that arena will impact the way women will be viewed by men and the trans community.
There are some things happening in the LGBTQ community which already reflect the lack of respect and understanding often shown to cis women during the sporting “inclusion” debate.
Before I write something so unsavoury, I would just like to reiterate I have compassion for people in the trans community and am in no way attempting to tar everyone with the same brush.
However, there are some women who identify as lesbian, who are being harassed and called transphobic, because they do not accept a penis as an inclusive female genital ie they will not have sex with a trans woman who has a penis.
I think we all live in a world where terrible distortions escalate into some seriously abusive and f*Ked up scenarios.
So when you say this is only going to effect a few cis women, be aware that our identities and lives are complex and have involved centuries of struggle
Make numerous comments accusing people of just wanting to exclude, not caring about other humans, “mansplaining” etc, and then grab your toys and leave when you don’t like something.
