I’m new to trainer road. Have previously worked with coaches through the ‘indoor’ season but have never felt that off-plan activities such as backcountry skiing, running and strength work were properly supported/taken into account, so curious to see how AI deals with this.
On getting started: I ride gravel, road and mtb. Ride hours vary from 5-6 in winter when there’s more skiing and fatbiking to 10+ per week in summer. Also 1-2 runs per week. For general fitness gains, plus being able to do decently on longer (60-80 mile) gravel events, where do I start?
I should mention that I’m a 56 year old woman. Pretty fit, very motivated, recovery slower than it used to be!
Thanks!
Interesting stats but you don’t tell us what you’re hoping to gain from using TR…
TR will need your training history to figure out where to start. If you have that in a Garmin device you can sync Garmin to TR. Then it’s possible to import history.
As far as how all the extra activities ( not cycling) will affect TR-AI, I will leave that up to others.
Well, I guess the main thing I’m hoping for is a schedule that gives me the right workout for where my body is at. Hard when it needs to be, easy when it needs to be. My Garmin has been telling me for weeks that I’m ‘unproductive’ lol
It will.
Garmin has most of my outdoor rides “unproductive” . Too much of this zone or that zone. But says my Vo2 max is great .

Here’s a link to my plan TrainerRoad
It is a Masters Aggressive plan and so far it seems to be working quite well as I recently won my age division, 70+, at the NY State Crit Championships. There were three of us racing, we were mixed in with all the masters from 40+ up for a total of around 40 riders. I managed to beat a cat 2 former state champ and actually lap him…The plan I’m using seems to work well but I also change/tweak it here and there when I feel there is a need.
You should look at building a plan, which is based on type…aggressive, etc…following the TR instructions. It will look at all your data from previous rides, etc. and build the plan along with that data and what you want to do. You can change it when you feel the need and can change a specific training day effort for something else depending on your need/desire/etc.
Thank you, that’s super-helpful, and congrats on that result - impressive!
