My tern folding bike 2016, used to be my right arm

Canyon Endurace CF SLX 2020

Giant Trance X Advanced SL 2012, i had terrible accidents with this dude - and also have the most pleasant memories. This is the bike which made me addicted to the winds.

Kids carrier & hardworker Winora Montero Pinion drive - 2016 (or maybe 2015 not sure)

Giant TCX Advanced SL 2011; very special bike, very low maintenance. Nearly 8-9 years older than endurace but lighter than it.

So pretty! Congrats.

New bike day today after waiting 2 months for certain parts to arrive… I tried to build this as ‘cheap’ as possible while fulfilling the needs of being an N=1 bike (road, crit, gravel, CX).

Frameset: $750 AUD delivered with through axles, headset, seatpost etc
Wheels: $900 AUD delivered (EIE Carbon - 50mm deep, 30mm wide, 24mm internal width)
Groupset: $75 AUD Second hand Shimano 105 5800
Brakes: $75 AUD Shimano RS305 mechanical
Bars & stem: $30 AUD second hand
Cranks: $80 AUD second hand Praxis Zayante M30
Saddle: Old Fizik I recovered myself
Assorted other parts like brake mount adapters, cables, discs, tape etc under up to roughly $200 AUD

The frame is technically a Fly FR-609 (the same as a WCB-C-112, GR029 or CX028) straight from Chinese factory. I’m a bit of a maths nerd (maths/physics teacher) hence the ‘alternative’ branding.
The wheels are by far the most expensive cycling related item I have ever bought which is a little scary but they feel SOOOO fast. I have no idea how people ride around on 5-10 thousand dollar bikes.
I have another set of second hand aluminum wheels I picked up for 50AUD that will be my gravel/cx set for now.

Can you imagine that happening during a race at the last full on stretch to the finish line? Would have pooped myself :joy: :joy:

It’s exactly because of little things like that I’m still sticking to good old aluminum. Seriously, a bike falls over and you crack one of the most vital components for your safety? Nope…

I’ve seen both carbon and aluminum bars break during rides as well as races. I watched a guy next to me do a back flip of sorts in a sprint as he snapped his carbon bars. He walked away w/some scratches.

Aluminum has its drawbacks as well, it might not crack like carbon from falling over, but have you seen it corroded from sweat. This is typically hidden under the bar tape. If you have not, Google “aluminum bars corrosion sweat” We call that a “widow maker”

Regardless of what you go with, you need to take care of it. Regular cleaning and visual inspections when swapping out bar tape.

Aluminum can crack too, except when it breaks it will snap completely like a candy cane instead of tearing off in a safer manner like carbon.

Oh yes, anything can break no doubt about it.

That being said, I’m 99,99% sure that an aluminum bar would never fatigue to a point where it would break during a hard effort after the bike landing on its side whilst being stationary.

I had a wipe out 2 years ago on a roundabout with the handlebar taking the brunt of the hit on its left side. I totaled the shifter, but still the handlebar came out essentially rock solid with only a few scratches.

Here from what I understand all it took you said was a smallish hit to make the carbon weak enough to break :face_with_head_bandage:

My buddy crashed his venge. Broke his shifter, his wheel, and fork. Carbon bars only got scratched. I’ll still take carbon over aluminum any day

New bike day for me! Picked up the frame, and built up with components that I had from an old build that didn’t fit. Still dialing in the fit, and will cut the steerer when I’m comfortable with it. Now to find a decent set of wheels for it…

Check out this video. Pink bike tested The break points of Santa Cruz tested aluminum vs carbon frames. Overall the carbon ones performed better taking a lot more force to break on the different crash and fatigue testing
