TrainerRoad - Feature Requests of what athletes expect / want in the future

I recently needed to use the workout creator on a Mac - boy was that a bad experience. All I needed to do was drag in an ERG file to create a workout, nothing more complex.

Maybe TR should publish their API to create workouts, I would guess the community would create something to upload them into the user account.

Alternative maybe Intervals.ICU could generate the right data natively in its export.

You can’t beat a bit of “blind adherence to plan” :joy:

It would be nice for TR to show the work actually done on the occasion when portions of the workout are repeated.

I occasionally repeat intervals or portions of a workout if I have additional time to ride and cannot find a suitable alternate. For example, I repeated the last hour of Eyre +1 on Saturday to make it a three-hour ride. TR shows only two hours (plus a little extension at the very end) but not the repeated interval. I believe it accounted for the extra time, though, since it increased my tempo PL by +1.8. So in some ways the backend seems to account for the work actually done, but you’d never know by looking at the workout itself or any of the workout metrics.

And to clearly indicates pauses, if any.

In the triathlete life there are not only triathlon, but also preparation races which might include single run, single swim in open sea or duathlon or other specialties. Would be very good to have them in the list of competition.

This works - but the Workout Creator often crashes, is a pain to change names - again needs to be copied and pasted from somewhere else due to keyboard handling. If TR opened up the API to create and publish that would be great, even push direct from Intervals, even better.

On the app, when swiping to see the list of intervals, it would be great to be able to scroll up to see the details of completed intervals. Particularly when doing VO2 workouts in resistance mode, it would be really helpful to see the average power / average heart rate attained for the previous intervals to confirm adherence (or not!) to the target

Mac or Windows only!

No bueno for me…

More surfacing of insights from heart rate. Would be good to see what, if anything TR is gleaning from my HR data. Also, estimation, or at least updating of MHR would be good too. Last would be a presentation of either % to LTHR or MHR amongst the post-ride graphs.

How about a button or something to toggle off the FTP line. I’ve figured out why sometimes I’m so stressed about some workouts… it’s when I can see how close to the FTP line it is… turns out they are not that bad but I could definitely do without the stress

Won’t you still know how close you are to FTP because TR scales all of their workouts as a % of FTP?

What’s really scary is when it gets further away from the line (ie - above it)…

FTP efforts (or efforts close to FTP) have a certain degree of suck, but I actually find it comforting when something is below FTP by any margin. 30 minutes at 95%? I can talk myself into thinking that should be pretty easy. I mean, I should be able to do close to an hour at 100% when fairly fresh, so 95% for 30 minutes should be a cake walk (until I’m into the interval anyway). The line is kind of like a rev limiter in a car, should be good if you are under it and it’s unsustainable when you are over it. Anyways, I’m not saying that getting rid of the line is a good or bad idea, but maybe try to flip the script on the line if that helps.

thats all true, until your not so fresh… and dont get me wrong, im all for everything above the line, thoes are typically short efforts and a lot of power, its the long bouts of time right at or below the line that i would rather not loose to before the fight even begins.

the numbers on the scale are so small i cant read them , that line is a menace and it knows it, haha

I totally agree

Pardon my cynicism but it seems like this question could be a way to understand the minimum amount of effort required to satisfy users.

With that said it might be worth differentiating between:
-What a typical TR user wants (me like blue graph! & % compliance to ftp-based plan)
-What they could & should be receiving
-What other apps provide, incl insights (many for free).

I’ve merged your thread into this one just to keep things tidy.

I’ll pass that feedback along to the team!

While using the App on a phone. I’d love to have the calendar page set as the home page rather than the suggested workout for the day/ career page.

Is there a way we could have an option in the preferences?

I never use train now. So literally every time I open the app I have to click away to see the workouts for the week.

My ideas not sure if other folks also would like this. Feedback and Ideas are welcome

  1. Enhancing TrainerRoad with Motivational and Adaptive Training Features

What we already have:

  1. The Training Plan & Workouts** – TrainerRoad excels here, offering intelligently structured plans and adaptive workouts.
  2. Feedback & Adjustments** – Features like workout surveys, AI-based workout analysis, automatic adjustments, and the Yellow/Red Day function ensure that training is personalized and adaptable.

These two aspects are already well-covered. However, the next step in making TrainerRoad even better is enhancing Motivation & Progress Tracking.

What i would add:

Motivational Features to Improve Consistency

Consistency is key in endurance training, and while TrainerRoad does a great job providing the workouts, it could further motivate athletes to stay on track. A few ideas to enhance this include:

Consistency Tracker – A simple percentage-based tracker showing how many of the planned workouts an athlete completed in a week or month.
Progress Feedback Messages – A weekly recap message such as:
“Great job! You completed 4 workouts this week, burned X calories, and stuck to your plan. Keep up the momentum!”
Streaks & Milestones – Encouragement for hitting consistency goals (e.g., “3 weeks in a row at 90% adherence!”).

This type of small but regular feedback could help athletes stay engaged and motivated.

  1. Better Progression in Endurance Ride (not only Endurence Rides but a good example)

Correct me if i am wrong, currently TrainerRoad’s Plan Builder progressively increases only intensity but not the workout time. For example, endurance rides could also progress in duration for those who have more time available.

For example, if an athlete can ride for 1–3 hours on weekends, Plan Builder could automatically increase the duration of endurance rides over time, rather than keeping them fixed.

  1. Flexible Plan Builder for Custom Plans with AI Assistance

For those who build their own training schedules, a hybrid option would be useful. Instead of selecting a pre-made plan, users could input workout types and available training time (e.g., VO2max on Tuesday for 1–1.5 hours, Sweet Spot on Thursday for 1 hour, Endurance on Saturday for 2–3 hours, etc.). TrainerRoad’s AI could then:

  • Suggest appropriate workouts based on the Type of workout
  • Provide progressive overload while maintaining balance and keep recovery weeks

This would allow users to retain flexibility in their schedules while benefiting from AI-driven progress recommendations.

Keep training
Cheers Guys see you on the Roads soon

I would like to see more things related to nutrition. Like the survey post-workout, one that keeps coming to my mind is having a cell to fill with the amount of carbs consumed during that training. The system does not necessarily use this information but could be used by users only as a centralized notepad instead of noting down this info somewhere (like I’m doing now…)
