TrainerRoad AI FTP Prediction FAQs

It was definitely a little short and maybe a few watts shy of the recommendations. Didn’t want to wear myself down too much for the big ride tomorrow. I can see a slight decrease in predicted FTP, but 8 watts seems to be a lot for not nailing one endurance ride.

Was Boarstone originally on your calendar, or did you add it and then do it?

Looking at your calendar, I notice that you’re pretty much going straight back into hard intervals after your big ride. I wonder what would happen if you took Cenizo out and gave yourself an extra recovery day?

Good luck on your big day! :+1:

I don’t blame you at all. Hope you crush tomorrow.

Thanks!

I was planning on moving Cenizo back a day (as well as Asta) but I will play around with removing it and see how that affects the PFTP.

The longer I think about - I‘m not sure what I should do with my FTP or predicted FTP. I have a goal in mind (climbs of around 3h length) and want to train for it. I‘d love to have a „number“ for my goal. E.g. „in four weeks you should be able to hold a long climb at x watts“.

I don‘t care about the rest honestly. I‘m not even sure I‘m training the right thing when I optimise for a higher FTP (I selected a fitting plan).

But it probably doesn‘t matter that much, it motivates to train, so that‘s good.

Similar thing happened to me. Finished a workout on Thursday and predicted FTP actually went up +1 w to a +6 in 25 days.

Woke up today and the prediction is now showing as -1 instead of +6 with no activity in between. Something is off.

FTP is not FTP?

I’ve been off TR for a long time as I had some frustrations with the old system struggling with properly managing the impact of workouts done outside of TR (outdoors or on other indoor platforms than zwift).

I’ve had my longest spell off the bike in 7 years, starting almost from nothing, and I’m excited to give the new approach a go and see if the old frustrations have gone and I can progress and get the consistency that I’ve been after from indoor training platforms. The good thing about starting from scratch all over again is I can do so with an open mind.

My ftp prediction went down from 213 to 211 after doing this workout. I completed it without breaks. The cadence drops were me out of the saddle. Does AI consider out of the saddle riding a ding on performance of the workout?

Did you accept the new AIFTP? If not, what you are seeing is pretty common. Highly recommend accepting the new FTP and letting the new system do its thing. BTW, accepting doesn’t mean you are slower or less fit. You are just accepting a training metric that works MUCH better with this new release.

I really want to see how accurate this is based on feedback from users. I’m a coached athlete, and love my coach, but was a TR user for many users, am still am a user just don’t use the plans. I’ve thrown a few medium volume plans on my calendar for the next 4 weeks out of curiosity and AI predicts my FTP to jump from 351 to 370, I find this hard to believe. My coach’s predictions for the year were 360-365 (if I can avoid the plague from my tiny children). Should I fire my coach…? I say that jokingly but have thought a few times over the last year thought I needed more TIZ which TR plans subscribe.

Just because TR puts an Ai label on FTP does not mean it’s redefined from what FTP is. All that does is make what is looking like a largely much improved setup unnecessarily confusing.

It was a shock to me when I saw my FTP go down in an instant and all your hard work felt like it did not matter, but giving it time, I see the wisdom in it. Its stepping back a bit to get faster. I will give it a bit of time to do its thing. Trainerroad has done a lot of wonders for my fitness in the past 2 years so will have to ride the new wave workout by workout and see where it goes.

Hang on. You’re looking at that TSS trend and wondering why your FTP is predicted to fall?

I’m no.coach, but ……

Yeah you clearly do a lot of non-TR activity?

You need to pre-plan some of that in if you want to give the system a chance of predicting your FTP at the end.

But you dont necessarily have to pre-plan it to make real progress - it depends how important you think the predicted FTP is to you and if it’s worth the effort.

Ok first query though.

AI FTP detection put me at 245w despite having done more that that for an hour in a random training peaks virtual race recently (which obviously wasn’t full gas), and a recent 290w 20min effort.

I’m all for the number not being FTP at all and meaning something completely different, but surely it’s not a value with TTE well beyond 1 hour?

I get all of that. Still… the number has a TTE above 1 hour.

Agree something sounds off if these are recent. Id contact support.

You’re cutting your TSS by approximately 60%.

If you were to cut calories by 60% do you think you’d lose weight or gain weight?

the answer here is simple as to why you’re current plan is losing fitness/FTP
