I had the exact same question.
Where do you get your structure from? Thatās the most appealing part of TR for me. You can make a year plan with all there plans.
If only 12 weeks like Zwift, I get lost.
Meh - prices increase, would have been good PR to announce beforehand to give those a chance to sign up before the hike. Will be interesting to see new user sign up numbers.
(Iām 99$ p.a., so not fussed).
Totally agreed, I was so excited in the lead up to the calendar and analytics were being released. I even signed up to the annual subscription. Itās totally useless to me as a triathlete with only cycling support. I use training peaks for all my planning and analytics.
When I originally signed up I held out for nearly 6 months because there was no trial period like competitors. I finally jumped, but that was back in 2017. Now at US$20 a month, I doubt Iād be trying if I were in that same position again.
I really think from a customer perspective a tiered membership would be more enticing. $14.99 a month for training plans and app and outdoor workouts, $10 a month for analytics, $19.99 for the whole package.
I donāt really care about the price increase as:
- I already have a yearly subscription, so it doesnāt change anything to me
- the plans work great for me, so Iām happy to pay for something that delivers
But I must say that the communication about that would be highly appreciated. TR accustomed us to something better.
Also, as others pointed - it becomes one of the most expensive options for newcomers - not sure itās the right play guys.
Iām grandfathered in, but as many people have pointed out before me, new features requires money. Sure Nate and company could have kept status quo at TR, no podcasts, no calendar, no outside workouts pushed to head units, lose some subscriptions and maybe gain some subscriptions. At some point as a business owner you have to decide do we stay stagnate and risk the business or take a chance and grow the business. TR management decided to take some risks and start introducing new features.
The podcasts are great, although I donāt race bikes or mountain bikes lots of useful information for those that do. Creating content costs money, purchasing the equipment, hiring someone to edit and publish the podcast costs money. I have no idea how many people listen to the podcast, but I always listen to it during the week while driving since day one. TR podcasts has the best audio to all of the podcasts I listen to. I donāt have to crank up the audio just to hear their voices.
I wasnāt excited about the calendar feature, but as I use it more I am seeing some benefit. I wish I knew how analyzing a ride could help me, but as an individual that just wants to get faster I donāt think looking at an outside ride is going to help. Doing the workouts every week will. I do look at my outside rides and see how close I am to the prescribed wattage though.
Running a forum isnāt too expensive, but it also, isnāt cheap. Making a forum free for everyone is fantastic and I for one am glad it is here. I sometimes felt like I was missing something by not being on facebook, but that was a personal choice ( I loathe facebook ).
Outside workouts pushed to the head unit is fantastic. Iāve only done two and am trying to learn how to use them correctly.
Iām sure there were other functions that have been developed just these stand out to me. Hiring people to make this happen costs money. I do think TR could be a little less public about some of the company purchases, ie sauna, especially with another price increase. This can leave a bad taste with some people. Why should I pay for TRās company sauna. Iām speculating company money was used, I could be wrong though.
As a business owner, the majority of expenses are salary and rent. When I see the hiring thread all I can think of is the bottom line for TR goes down, to keep it at a certain level either revenue increases or one can cut expenses. Lots of complaints about raising prices, but how many people would complain if the podcasts went away, if tech support took days to respond or if this forum was taken down.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and the right to voice it, I am trying to point out some of the great things TR has given to the cycling community. I would still pay the $200/yr if I had to, because that was much cheaper than my previous coach, where I didnāt get faster in swim, bike or run.
Why is it we spend thousands of dollar on bikes, shoes and wheels we explode when we need to pay 100$ more a year! for something thatās (proven) āreallyā makes us faster?
Me included.
Some smart people here?
iPhone 7 or 8(not sure off the top of my head)
Ironically I was listening to their podcast and the app froze.
Happened last night and happened tonight.
Last night happened during a steady state interval so I was on google. But 9/10 times this doesnāt seem to be an issue.
@Nate_Pearson I am caught by the annual piece and would like to move from monthly. Can you let us know when it is fixed please?
(Loyal fan and user )
The support guys can do it right now. For me Cooper did it one hour ago.
Annual subscriber at $99 so Iām not directly affected, but canāt help but feeling off put like so many here .
Iāve been a big pusher of the TR product and have turned on at least 10 people to become TR subscribers over the past year plus. Iāve additionally had such an appreciation for the companyās drive and direction, not to mention the CEOās openness and communication with its users. It felt good to recommend TR to others.
However, this sneaky increase feels like a misstep @Nate_Pearson and out of character for TR. It leaves me to feel maybe TR is not who I thought they were. You wonāt lose me as a subscriber as Iām a dedicated racer, love the product and grandfathered in. That being said, I can no longer in good conscious recommend it aside from those that are very serious about training and need a cheaper option than a personal coach. This feels gross to say, but Iād probably now suggest they try other cheaper competitors first, THEN try TR if theyāre looking for something more.
Some people who donāt race still want to follow a structured plan and get the most out of their riding, inside or outside. TR is there to meet that need.
Some people who donāt race arenāt that bothered about following a plan and just want to enjoy riding their bike. If that extends to enjoying their riding inside then Zwift and Netflix are there to meet that need.
He asked me why someone would let their account lapse - and I told him.
I have been a subscriber since 2013 so I canāt complain about my $99 year but in todayās world $190 a year is a great bargain. Many of you are paying $2K for a carbon wheelset or frame that costs a mere fraction of that to produce and not complainingā¦many are probably spending more than $190 a year on supplements and not blinking an eye. Well over $1K for a trainerā¦its the world we live in⦠My storage unit has gone up $10 a month twice in a yearā¦thats $240ā¦am I complaining? GP Lamaās click bait headline reads like a CNN or Fox News headlineā¦lets keep it real.
As others have said, Iām grandfathered in (thank you!) so this doesnāt really effect me. (Btw, Netflix and many other companies include existing customers in their price hikes so it makes sense that they make announcements prior to.)
However, after getting to know the guys in the podcast and based on how they handled the previous price increase the silent increase is a bit out of character. It probably wouldāve been adopted by the subscriber base a little more freely if there had been a little heads up.
Shaneās article title does read like a click bait, but is in no way misleading or factually incorrect. In the last 12 months the price almost doubled and while the features added are nice, they didnāt fundamentally change the way most people use the product. Some people do spend thousands of dollars, but there are also people with dumb trainers and speed sensors and those people donāt fork out 190$ to get the 20% discount. A significant portion of people that would already did so and are grandfathered in anyway.
Keeping it real would probably be more along the lines of comparing apples with apples.
Your storage unit going up by $10 per month has very little to do with the price of Trainerroad or what you paid for your carbon wheels. But where the products price sits against its direct competitors in the market is very important.
Itās admirable that people are so passionate about Trainerroad - especially the guys in charge, but at some point you have to really have a good unbiased to look at yourself and a very good look at your competition and what is on offer for the money.
I bet Sufferfest and now Wahoo are happy about the TR price increase and now makes a bundle deal for them even more attractive to the consumer. I just hope this TR move doesnāt negatively affect them in the long run and do the opposite of what theyāre trying to accomplish.
totally agree. That and the fact that you can build workouts super easy in xert, using alternatives to FTP, such as intervals based on MMP or xsss. The UI is yucky, the planner and calendar look terrible but these are minor issues for the price.
Just saying price increases are the world we live inā¦I wanted some entertainment so I thought I would post here.
