TR Price Increase to $189.95/year ($19.95/month)

Just adding that I would like to see a replacement tiered system. I have only been using TR for a short while and have seen intense improvements. I have been fingering the plans and only look at the data from that day. I don’t need the outdoor workouts it any of the deeper information. I only made sure I hit the targets if the particular ride I am doing.

I still cant figure out why folks just let it lapse. Nate states all the time that he wont raise the price you pay now if you keep it going. I got an email a few months ago when my year was up. I didn’t have to do anything to renew just happened. It is legit the best money I spend on cycling.

A coach is how much a month?

Heck I just bought new handlebars MSRP $400 I know TR will get me better than those bars ever will.

In the grand scheme of cycling even at $190 it still is way cheap.

I get why you feel it is a kick in the a** since you let it lapse then got hit but still worth the money by far!

The only thing rising faster than college tuition is TR subscription fees… over 90% in less than a year.

I would say it’s the opposite. If they were getting ready for a sale or getting a cash injection from an investor then they would likely be more focused on expanding the customer base. I take this is an indication that they’re looking to grow the business organically and sustainably. Which is good news for customers in the long run as the money will be spent on building a better product/service, not on marketing, sponsorship and advertising to chase higher growth.

I disagree.

If I were looking to sell my company and wanted potential buyers and VC to increase their valuation I would try to find a way to increase my revenues… ala silent massive rate increase.

But that is only increasing the price for new customers so how can you equate that to an increase in revenue?

I would said to get new customer and fast money is to promote a discount to new customers not increasing the price to new customers or increase the price for existing customer?

I enjoy using TrainerRoad. I feel that it offers some GREAT workouts and plans. However, I urge caution to any multi-sport athletes who might consider the calendar and TR analytics a selling point when signing up. As a triathlete, I find NO VALUE in this feature of the platform. I don’t even bother looking at it. WKO is far superior for analytics.

This won’t have much impact on revenues in the short term though, as existing customers won’t be paying any more. It’s a change that will kick in over the long term, which to me shows that Nate and co are looking down the line at this as a sustainable business, not something they’re planning to sell off.

If they were looking to boost revenues in the short term ahead of a sale I think they’d be looking at things like selling advertising space on the forum and in the app, maybe licensing their training plans out to other platforms like Zwift, maybe looking at how they can sell our data. All stuff that would boost revenues in the short term but go against their stated long term mission.

That’s how I read the move, too: the TrainerRoad team wants fresh cash to supercharge their efforts to e. g. get in-app calendaring and analysis tools to the user. If you want to offer yourself for sale, you want to maximize your user base by lowering prices. Again, if I were them, I would have communicated that fact together with the price hike. You want to maximize good will and give people the impression you are working hard for their money, and that the price increase will be worth it.

To me the biggest miss here was not announcing the change ahead of time. Seems that when bigger services like Netflix or Amazon Prime raise their prices, you’ll hear about it months beforehand.

In this day and age where everything is becoming a subscription service, knowing about an upcoming price increase is helpful to multiple groups of people, like those who are: 1) on a budget, 2) about to subscribe for the first time, or 3) if their subscription is about to end (like the OP’s situation).

While this increase doesn’t affect me (I have a current sub and plan to keep it for a while), doing a stealth pricing increase does seem a bit shady. Being forthcoming about future product changes, whether functionality or pricing, is always a Good Thing™️ in my book.

They ultimately will increase the price for current users. I’m sure even longtime users have temporarily let their account lapse during periods of little use (spring, summer, fall.) Then when they come back, BAM, price increase.

They will never license their plans to Zwift. The minute they do that, their only advantage is gone.

Bet this company is sold in less than 2 years.

Why would you let it lapse? I wont let mine lapse. I use it all year long and I race and race a lot in comparison to most people. I am fortunate that I have a local race series and I am old so I can race up to 3 times a week during the week and racing on weekends and still don’t let it lapse during the season. I am odd in the fact that I don’t ride hardly outside anymore except for racing but still wouldn’t let it lapse as I use the calendar to track everything which it is worth it to keep for just that.

Probably the longest thread I’ve read on here!!!

I started using TR in 2013, and cancelled my subscription earlier in the year. I found that with Zwift, Strava premium and latterly Xert, TR for me was redundant. I wasn’t using the extra features, had a core of workouts that I was doing and had pretty much memorised, and found other platforms more immersive for spending time on the trainer. The fact that you can push the Xert workouts to Zwift is a no brainer for me.

As now a “new user” were I to reactivate my account, I don’t see that TR is value for money. It’s double what I was paying in 2015. The new features don’t, in my view, compare with the features in other platforms.

For me, at the new price, it’s just no longer value for money and wouldn’t consider a subscription again (unless I could push the workouts directly to Zwift and the price saw comparable with Xert).

Being an Aussie this pushes the price up around $270-300. I for one would struggle to recommend it to anyone at this price.

They have a long way to go in my opinion for the premium price.

  1. It still causes my MacBook to freeze
  2. The App has caused my phone to crash.
  3. The App is great, but could be better.
  4. The inside to outside workouts don’t all correlate that well IMO.
  5. I think if the features which get carrot dangled were already in place it would be a different story.

Has my FTP gains been any different or better than my friends on Zwift, possibly, possibly not. I know my workout compliance has been easier on Zwift.

Same here. “Serious” enthusiast, not someone looking for a coaching replacement, rather a knowledgeable way to stay near the front of group rides. I believe a tiered model could work here.

I have never had my app crash on my phone. I have read other say this but never once had this happen. What phone are you using? Are you running multiple apps at once? Just curious why this never happens to me. When I say never I truly mean never.

I wonder what percentage of people commenting are on the grandfathered plans? 99%? So there’s no cost disadvantage to pretty much anyone commenting here.

So why the comments? Because I think everyone just wants to see Trainerroad succeed.

Not everyone is a competitive racer. Some people just want something to do when it’s not nice enough to ride outside, where bikes belong.
