Hello - I’ve had a 530edge since 2020 and wondered if upgrading to the 1040 was really worth it. I do -~ 8 hrs a week and do a number of 100km + rides during the year. Thanks
Unless you need a bigger screen and a lot of fancy extras I would not upgrade. I went from the 530 to a 840 and did not think it was worth it.
I also went 530 to 840 solar. I actually liked the change to the touchscreen except for the times when I touch it accidentally while on the TT bike and make changes like deleting my whole road profile and then the unit defaulting to indoor mode for a bit before I noticed. But that’s just user error (make sure to lock the screen at the start of a TT bike ride haha). I probably would enjoy the larger screen when navigating on my longer rides on my road bike.
I wouldn’t go to the 1040 at the moment though as it’s already been replaced by the 1050. The 1040 solar is the same price as the 1050. If you’re in the US and part of USA Cycling you can join ExpertVoice and get around 20% off Garmin Edge units and watches so you can buy it whenever at a discount. They add the newest models a couple months after release.
Some of the fancy extras are nice to have, but I liked the metal back quarter turn mount. Having broken a wing off that vital point of contact to the bike, having it be much more durable was a win for me. (the 1050 mount is replaceable apparently)
I like the big screen too, but if someone is happy with the support of their older Edge, and doesn’t need the features (yet), staying put is fine. (I got a Di2 bike, and the support for that in the Edge units was important to me. Then varia came out and seeing the screen better was a plus.
Garmin seems to be admitting that the Solar feature was a gimmick, and not a viable reason for buying one, nor worth it from a usability standpoint? They have/are dropping it from product model updates.
Def not saying upgrading to a 840/1040 is worth it, but they both have replaceable plastic mtg tabs. I’m running an 840 currently. I might consider an 850 if/when that comes out as I don’t like big computers. Even the 840 is kinda big compared to my previous 820.
Thanks for the responses.
I feel like my 530 is still pretty awesome and bug free. I’m hesitant to jump on anything new with Garmin as I’ve had buggy products in the past.
Also, $500-600 for a bike computer just feels like a bridge too far for me.
I upgraded from 530 to 1040 strictly for the size. Just much easier to see everything
Excellent thanks
Your gps is barely broken in. I’d run it a good 10:years at least or until it presents regular problems.
Thank you!
I upgraded from the 1000 to 1040 two years ago, mainly due to battery life being an issue. If it wasn’t I would probably still be using the 1000. Unless you want the bigger screen size I doubt going from a 530 to 1040 is worth the money.
Thanks!
Excellent thanks!
