55 days is plenty of gap. Whether it is your best marathon will depend on your history.
Some fools do a marathon three weeks before an Ironman…
which is definitely a bad idea!

Oops, I forgot the roll call for this month. @Billabong @cc51cam @moonman @mrtopher1980 @stino77, how did March go for you all?
My March summary:
| Sport | Activities | Time | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swim | 2 | 1:28:32 | 3.7 km |
| Bike | 37 | 46:35:50 | 1,639 km |
| Run | 10 | 8:27:14 | 85 km |
| Total | 49 | 56:31:36 | — |
My bike fitness is in a good place, the new TR AI system is working pretty well even though the tri plans aren’t fully adaptive. I’m slowly building my running mileage back up after taking a couple of months off to deal with some ITBS, and the swim… is what it is, as usual. My plan for this month is to get back in the pool (lap and endless) in earnest and start building some proper swim yardage, and as soon as the lakes thaw get some cold water swims in to prep for Alcatraz.
March was a decent month:
I’ve signed up for my first 70.3 on 24th May. Done a few olympic distance before, but I’ve never even done a standalone half-marathon so the run concerns me a bit!
Chattanooga70.3-Augusta70.3- Edisto Island,SC 70.3
Where’d my long weekend ride go ??? Logged in to see the week ahead and weekend long rides are gone ! for my whole training plan through October. Sent message to support, hopefully they get back to me faster than the 6 days it took for my question a couple weeks ago.
Terrible. Last year’s run injury settled in again. Still not able to run for a month now. And also intense or long rides or not really an option because it delays my recovery. :-(. 9 weeks before my full IM. I give it another two weeks. If not been able to run easy again I am afraid I have to transfer my race towards next year.
were they replaced with something or just totally blipped off the calendar?
about half were completely blank, no w/o at all, the other half had an unusually long run substituted
How long were your last three long runs? (Time or distance)
Time on feet is your friend starting yesterday.
After doing my first full (IMCA) in October of 2024 I had a hard time really committing to training last year. Did a couple Oly’s and basically called it a year. I kept cycling and lifting. Finally fully motivated again this year. I was going to do IM Sant Cruz this fall, then last minute decided to do the 70.3 at Wildflower next month. I’ve got a sprint on Saturday, then I’ll do a local Oly series this summer to keep the training manageable while still fitting in life. Lol. Anyone else here planning to be at Wildflower?
It went really well to be honest. First run in to a 70.3 that I have managed the taper rather than have work or sickness dictate. Strangely my legs felt really heavy out of the swim and heading in to T1? Anyone experienced that. Once on the bike and spinning i didn’t have any issues but not sure if from having a wesuit on much longer than usual but was a strange sensation and in the moment i decided to walk to the bike rather than run and risk a bit of a trip
March was a great month for swim and run, however, my bike was not good. After returning from Spain and not needing the PRSix I left it in the bag. When I finally put it together i saw a blemish on the rear triangle This area has looked suspect since i crashed in Aug 2024. Now it has a nice crack. I went to my shop to talk with my mechanic about options, he sold me a XPR that has a small crack from one of TriBike Transports last shipment. So it is in the Carbon Repair shop until this weekend. And the trainer bike has been neglected and it is in the shop getting a new drive train.
So I have been pushing my swim and run volume up.
Swim 62,000 Yards
Run 121
BIke 250
This past Monday 16km easy in 1 hour 46 minutes
Two weeks ago I did 15km including 5x2km at threshold pace, it wasn’t meant to be a long run, but by the time I’d jogged to the park and done the intervals it was!
Three weeks ago I did 14km including 6km progressing the pace from 5:50 to 5:00/km in the middle.
I did do 28km off road, mostly over sand dunes, at the end of February, at a very relaxed pace.
I know I can do the distance, it’s about doing the distance at a reasonable pace that concerns me.
How did you treat you ITBs? How severe it was, what helped you? Can you share some insights about your routine.
Do any of you have some advice on pacing the run in a 70.3? Assuming I’m aiming for sub-2 hours, and a pace of just below 5:40/km. How long should I take to build into that pace coming off the bike? How much slower than goal pace should I start at?
Most people would say aim for even splits, see what happens. It’s running too fast at the start that’s the thing to avoid.
I’ve never cracked the Ironman run leg, but I would look at your Olympic run leg, double it and add 20mins as your target pace to train towards.
Then, in training, see how you feel holding that pace in brick sessions and long runs. If “it feels great, invigorating!” I’d say it’s too fast
If it feels easy and too slow, then it’s probably about right ![]()
If you have never run a half marathon, I would be extra cautious in setting a time goal that will demoralise you on race day. I can’t tell from anything you’ve posted whether it’s a reasonable target or not…
I did 51:23 for an olympic distance triathlon run leg a year ago, though the course was was 400m short of 10k. My running has certainly not gone backwards since then, but I’ve not done any all out 10Ks in training. Yesterday I did 3x3km at 5:15/km with 3 minute jogging recoveries.
If it were me, I’d set off at 2h10 pace. If you’ve got 5km left and are raring to go, then drop the hammer.
Whilst we will often talk about individual splits, it’s only the overall time that counts. And then usually only to ourselves ![]()
