It’s a pretty small stretch of beach, so I know distances from one end to the other. I’ve also used the timer alarm on my watch to gauge shorter distances. Not optimal for sure, but trying to make it work.
In my opinion, it would be very hard to do the effortless swimming program in open water. There are a lot of drills that would be tough to do.
Are most here using TR for training? I mean I do my own thing as far as the swim and runs, but as far as the bike workouts go.
Welcome back Patti - yes, I do and have for about six years.
Super! I’m starting Olympic mid-volume and just wanted to know how others find the training
I have used TR plans off and on since 2018. I am following the sprint distance mid volume this year with my own swims/runs. I plan to use the swimming and running in the plans as guidelines later in the year. Right now my swimming is mostly technique based and running is just slowly building back mileage after some time off. I feel like the addition of adaptive training has helped TR account for swimming and running stress better by adjusting bike workouts based on responses after the workout.
I’m on Olympic low volume; I’ve used this for the last couple of years. I tried starting mid-volume this year (starting in nov 2022) but doing three sessions a week of each sport just doesn’t fit in with my life, so back on low volume with occasional extra rides or runs.
I’ve actually just finished a couple of seperate swim and run plans so I’m now following the TR suggestions, and they’re actually quite good for where I am in terms of fitness and capability. The swim sessions fit in a lunchtime pool visit, but are the right amount of work to feel like I’m doing something worthwhile, and the run sessions are a little less than I can do, but also fit in to my life quite nicely.
As above, Adaptive Training for the bike planning is great, really does keep the level of workouts at “just hard enough”. It might be my imagination but it seems to be working better since run analysis was rolled out…
The only reason I’m opting for mid-volume is I’m an aquabiker so I use the runs as either walks or strength training. Otherwise I can see where stacking that much would be too much
Yes - I’ve switched things around this time, having used a TR Medium volume Sprint Tri plan previously for the bike and run. I started out with SSB and then Sustained power build, but didn’t like the look of the the 90 hard efforts and limited VO2 work over the remainder of the block, so switched back to the Sprint Tri plan (MV). Swimming through a local SwimSmooth coach, running using power vis Steve Paladino’s plans.
I now have a proper target too - I qualified for the Euro Sprint Championships in Madrid (June), so 12 or so weeks to focus!
Sound plan!
I use the workouts and sometimes the plans on my FORM goggles - they really motivate me to push. A few times in the past weeks I will see what TrainNow recommends and do that workout.
I either need someone to talk me off the edge of making a mistake or encourage me to take the next step.
Last year I did Olympic low volume off the covid couch. Saw decent improvement. Wasn’t satisfied with my performance, however.
Last offseason, did LV SSB 1&2 and SPB. Saw good improvement.
This January, I started mid volume Olympic base and I just finished mid volume build. While hard, I’d say it was the appropriate amount of hard. I’ve seen good improvements in swimming and running. I was targeting a race in may, but that is cancelled. Now my main and only event is the Lake Tahoe Olympic at the end of august.
My thinking is that more volume is better, and I might see greater improvements if next week I start high volume base, build, and specialty leading into my event.
I’ve been successful with staying consistent with mid volume. I will tone down the intensity of swims and runs as needed, I am not afraid to stay z2, I prioritize the consistency of doing the workouts and getting the volume in over the intensity. I let AT handle the bike stuff.
Is it a mistake to move up to high volume? How do I know when I’m ready to make that jump? I want to be competitive in my age group. I feel that I’ve tolerated mid volume and it’s 2 a days well, and that adding more volume will help
I’ve used the HV Olympic Plan, I was inconsistent but successful. It’s probably the most achievable HV plan TR have, I think it’s 4 swims 4 bikes 4 runs.
The only questions really are do you have the time and routine to allow for all the SBR sessions…and the time to recover from them?
I believe so, I only work in the office twice a week, rest of the week at home. No kids, not a lot of overtime. Just turned 29, so hopefully young enough to absorb some good training.
Evenly paced for all 8 reps, but at a pace that you couldn’t maintain for a 9th interval. Should be slower than your all-out 50 pace, but maybe not by a whole lot. If your pace fades over the reps, you went out too hot.
The May 4th podcast announces updates to the Sprint and Olympic triathlon plans! (last 2 minutes)
RPE changed to distance paces and bike workout progressions updated…
Been waiting a long time for updates so good news
First race of the season for me today. Sprint aquabike with a pool swim and surprisingly hilly 9.8 mile bike. I’ve been pretty hit or miss with training lately, having my husband and my mother both hospitalized one week after the other for heart issues. And yes, I’ve heard all the jokes about me being the cause!
So with very little training and a suddenly cold morning I headed off to PA at 4:30 in the morning to start my season. One of my CeeGee’s arm pads flew off somewhere along the highway so that when I racked my bike I had to innovate and taped a folded up sock to the arm cup. I’m hoping to upgrade the cups at some point so a cheaper replacement has already been ordered.
Not sure what I estimated my time at for the 300 meter swim but I did a pretty good job of seeding because I swam up and down the lanes pretty close to two other swimmers. I did not push and just wanted to come out of the pool comfortably.
It was one heck of shock running out into the cold morning now being wet! I grabbed my long sleeve jacket as soon as I reached my bike and then grabbed the bike and out I went. Since I have don’t no practice lately I didn’t hazard a flying mount and instead sensibly walked out to the mount line.
I had forgotten my Garmin so no data to share but the first few miles through a neighborhood were fast and sharp and a helluva lot of fun. I really need to try crit racing one day because I love this fast and furious riding. Every time we made a turn you were staring up the road at a noticeable hill. As much as I hate hilly courses I still was able to make some passes on hills and was able to maintain the gap.
I’ve started using the Wheelbuilder disk cover that I’ve had in the closet for years because “why not?” and let me tell you, that thing felt slippery as all get out! My ol’ Kestrel felt like she could take flight when the downhills and the wind cooperated.
My takeaway from the course was “FUN” and I was surprised at how quickly the 2 laps went by. When I dropped my chip in the bucket there were two others in it so I was hoping for a podium. Aquabike awards top 5 women and top 5 men. There was one absolute stud of a swimmer in the women’s field and I knew I was racing at best for 2nd.
I was pleased to be correct and earned a silver on the podium and a cash prize! Whoa! I may be a professional aquabiker now!
I’m wonderfully tired and inspired to get my training back on track for the rest of the season. Racing season is here!!!
Congrats!
Did the changes occur? I’ve been fiddling around with TriDot but find it extremely finicky and not to make too much sense
I’m at the end of a full distance plan so I haven’t had time to explore I’m afraid
