I totally agree with the family aspect of this. There is no better feeling knowing you can do what you love and not have to neglect a great deal of time with your family.
back in my tri days, my favorite swims were in the summer in Lake Michigan. Weād start just before sunrise and the sun would break the horizon as we swam.
I still remember on particular July 4th when we did itā¦water was like glass, cool and clear. You could see 20ft+ easy down below.
As much as i love riding, those early AM swims were simply awesome. If I could do those swims w/o having to endure the agony of the pool, I might actually still do triās! LOL!
One of my most memorable rides was on a dark October night when I set off about 8 and arrived at my destination 150 miles away at sunrise. Was 17 or 18 at the time, did it entirely on my own and unsupported. Had a little loose change to phone home in case if an emergency.
this is me all summer on saturdays so i can help the wife with the toddler during the day. love it. though iāll admit i sleep in till 4:30, maybe 5 sometimes.
I honestly should do this more often. The beach is a 20 minute ride from my place. Tons of good coffee spots on the wayā¦I really should plan on some early rides to see the sun come up over lake Michigan.
Night rides are awesome too!
Sometimes on hot summer weekday nights, after my six year old goes to bedā¦if my wife turns in early Iāll go out after dark for an hour long spin to a quiet brewery and have a pint outside. The city is totally different and quiet after dark during the week. Best feeling in the world ![]()
Probably not quite in line with some other posts here, but I have a solid memory of a dawn run/swim in a little cove in St. John (virgin islands).
Beautiful morning ended up with me completely bugging out about barracudas in the water:)
I had seen a few the day before and couldnāt get them out of my head!
As a morning person Iād totally be down for this. Might have to try it tomorrow (Sat).
By the way earlier that should have read fasted not fastest.
No way I was riding fastest at 5am!
Was up at 5:30 today and slightly tempted, but bailed and decided to sit here and type comments over a coffee instead ![]()
That sounds brilliant!
Iām on my last ride of a recovery week tomorrow. 2hrs of āBoringstoneā on the calendar. I live on the side of the local mountain ranges. ![]()
Wish me luck! The XC bike with a 50/32 combo has me pushing 280watts at 60rpm to get up my street, and thatās not as steep as the ride up to the lookouts.
Urgh.
Could always do laps of a flat stretch for 2 hours like a nutter ![]()
That concept is so ridiculous to me. Iāve no doubt it works if you donāt do much else aside from riding a bike and your FTP estimate is up there in regards to your potential.
Riding up the (small) mountain for a sunrise photo it is.
PS. Also a massive fan of hitting the single track after dark. The only problem is that momentum stops being your friend when you canāt see shit.
For all you dawnies: When do you actually go to sleep in the evening? 04.15am sounds awfully early to me.
Here in continental, central Europe this time of the year it is still very very cold.
And my wife hates to get up in the morning, so the 3 and 7 year old kids might burn down the house until I am back.
Donāt worry, it will only happen once and they will learn!
10pm here. Mrs naturally likes to stay up to 1 or 2am.
Sleepbuds are the best when you have two people out of sync like this. I canāt hear her at night, she canāt hear me in the morning. Saves us both needing to creep around quietly.
9.30pm is my normal bedtime, even at weekends. Have got my whole family in sync now too.
you mean 10pm, right? ![]()
