I haven’t set this up, but I will as I train for the Port Macquarie IM May 2023. A great DIY solution

Reverse Periodization for Tri??
Hello, first post on the forum (been using TR for years)
Training for 70.3 Chattanooga - am toying with the idea of reverse periodization.
Has anyone had experience with Reverse Periodization?? - Seems to make sense to start with Vo2 Max and then get more ‘race specific’ into threshold then sweet spot as it is more ‘race specific’…thoughts?
tri plans have Vo2max during Base.
Makes a lot of sense to me to lift the ceiling early with some vo2max on indoor trainer and later become more specific to the event by doing more and more tempo and endurance.
Welcome to the forum and the thread ![]()
Yes, as asteryx says. And I’ve been doing this for years.
In the bag for @pstalley great performance ![]()
Thanks mate, I’ll check it out. May is a bit close for me to commit to IM, but I’m looking to hit maybe the 70.3 in port mac, and Mooloolaba 70.3 cos I have family close by to stay with to make it a “cheap” event. Cairns and Port are super close together so it will be one or the other. Likely PM as it will be a bit cheaper/easier logistically for me. Hopefully 2024 will be a couple IM distance races.
November roll call!
And I think it’s soon time for our antipodean contingent to take over race reporting as the northern hemisphere looks towards winter.

Now looking at autumn winter season, I’m not doing an off-season in an attempt to avoid my annual weight gain and aiming for a swim marathon this month while doing a General Build plan. ![]()
Thanks @JoeX . I really enjoyed the 70.3 WC. Watching the female pros the day before was so fun and inspiring. It’s a great course for spectating on the run and it was just so cool to see Knibb and the three-pack of Findlay, Duffy, & LCB. Watching Emma Pallant-Browne flying through the field was super cool.
My race went well, all things considered. It was cold, so I layered up on the bike. My T1 transition was almost 8 minutes, a result of a huge transition area and the challenge of putting on layers with wet frozen hands coming out of 62-degree water. The bike course was tough, but scenic. Snow Canyon–wow! It’s so beautiful. I averaged about 12 mph for the 5 miles of climbing in Snow Canyon, so I had plenty of chance to appreciate it. (I actually went back and hiked in it the day after the race, just so I could enjoy it again). The bike, combined with the 2+ mile climb out of T2 initially had me in a dark place on the run, but I pulled it together and ran a decent pace.
This was my first WC and I loved it. It’s a whole different vibe and the crowds are huge. The organization was off the charts, especially considering there were 6,000+ athletes, and St. George is so welcoming. The talent was both inspiring and humbling. In my last 3 IM-branded races, I’ve finished 2nd, 5th, & 7th in my age group. Here I was 163rd (of 495) – quite a difference. Even if I got pounded by the competition, I definitely want to do another.
This is my last race in the 45-49 age group so now I get to be the young’un. For next year I’m considering Des Moines (70.3) and have already registered for IM Wisconsin. I’ll probably find another 70.3 that’s within driving distance of home (Chicago). After a year of traveling long distances to races, I’m ready to do some more local events.
Thanks, Joe. Not much to report here, I took a few days entirely off after coming home from Arizona. Today I’m starting a high-volume full distance triathlon plan, and I’ve signed up for three races next year: Ironman 70.3 St. George in May, Ironman Coeur d’Alene in June, and Echo Triathlon (half distance) in July. I might also try to do LoToJa in September if I can get in, I figure if I can do 112 miles on a bike, I can probably also do 200.
I’m currently researching treadmills so I can continue training over the winter and I’m somewhat frustrated every option seems to suck in subtly different ways, but I might take this to the running thread for further discussion.
I finished my season with 70.3 Wisconsin in September. I’ve just been taking it easy since that race. I’m working out less and mostly without a purpose. I qualified for AG nationals (sprint and Olympic distance), so this next year is going to be more about speed than distance. No 70.3’s or IM’s for me. Feel free to keep me in the roll call, I love seeing everyone’s successes and training. ![]()
Thanks @JoeX
I have one more race left this year at 70.3 Indian Wells on December 4th (5 weeks from now).
I was registered for 70.3 Waco a few weeks ago, but threw my back out at work about 5-6 weeks prior. It was pretty severe. I couldn’t train at all for 3 weeks. I could barely stand up for the first week. It left me with only 3 weeks to prepare before waco, coming off of zero training and an injury. So I thought the smartest move was to refocus for Indian Wells rather than rush for Waco, probably under perform given the circumstances, and then possibly compromise Indian Wells too.
Once I could safely train again, I had 10 weeks until Indian Wells. Very condensed schedule, but doable. I ran plan builder and it basically went 4 weeks base, 4 weeks build, 2 weeks specialty. I’m on my 2nd week of build right now, so I’m in that heavy training cycle right now of early rise, workout, go to work, second workout, eat everything, sleep as much as possible. Just living for training at the moment lol.
My Tri season wrapped up in June/July (did a fondo/medio in Sept)
Raced IM CDA 70.3 - which was a decent race (I struggled more than I had hoped in the run due to the heat and my dad bod)
Missed IM OR 70.3 due to Covid
focused on better eating and doing long 5-6 hour bike rides over the summer and lost 17 pounds (7.7 KG)
Very full 2023 race schedule
June - IM CDA
July - IM 70.3 OR
Sept - IM 70.3 WA Maple Valley
