20min tests are just awkward to pace. I’m either doing a ramp or a 1h TT - at least I can pretend that’s an Olympic bike leg.
I’m still a ways off my usual ~270W at the moment but I ramp tested this week after a measely 100TSS per week (roughly 2/3 LV SSB 1) but still gained +3.7% to 256W.
I’ve loaded up LV HD Base into the Calendar but it’s just to supplement my run volume until I hit my run targets.
It’s properly cold here in VA. Lots of snow and ice lingering around. Wish I could run more than I currently am, but at least its giving me time to ride more
My race watts have remained about the same despite an FTP that has gone from low 4 to c. 5 W/kg. I’ve got quicker but that’s down to faster equipment and a much better position.
I’m normally front of front pack cyclist (in AG racing, those pro’s are about 5 minutes up the road in a 70.3!).
What that has meant is that my IF is pretty low these days so I’m much fresher when the trainers go on.
I did a relay a little while ago and biked at 0.85 and there was no chance I could’ve put in a decent run split after that. I’m only biking about 0.75 for a 70.3 now.
I’m pretty positive that most folk, once they’ve got to a solid FoP bike split, would be better off lowering the IF and taking the benefit on the run rather than the ever diminishing speed return of the extra watts on the bike.
But we’re all coming from different places with current strengths and weaknesses as well I suppose. So YMMV!
@Bbdude Laughs in Minnesota. I bailed on my ski because the high was -11F with a windchill of -30F.
I’ll also note that when I first got a power meter back in 2016, I was around 2.7 for my first couple seasons. Then I got an indoor trainer and went to town.
@nicco Thanks a ton for that insight! Yeah it’s weird now that something like 8-10W is a “marginal gain” from a time on course perspective after a couple years building the power. One one of the somewhat warmer days we had recently I did a brick run off an easier endurance ride (3hr at 0.67 IF) and my legs felt AMAZING, and that’s what initially sparked that thought, coupled with the new test.
@Michael_Tate - Always some place colder! ~0F seems to be my max for runs … at least with my current winter kit!
I started cycling in Feb 2020 for general exercise. Became serious and bought a trainer in Nov 2020. Played around w/ Zwift and finally discovered TR in March 2021. It’s been a big help having structured plans. Did the HV 70.3, MV Power Build and now onto HV 140.6 … have gone from FTP of 190 (2.00W/kg) to 255 (2.69W/kg) thus far. Given what you’ve posted … sounds like I just need more time!
I can’t get over how many people here have FTP over 300w to my mind it’s amazing the work that must go in to maintain those numbers. let alone whilst swimming and running. I’m not going to mention w/kg as i’m 5’ 5" and 71.5kg. I really need to stop the bread and beer. Well, the bread at least.
I did TR’s Geiger session a couple of days ago which was pushing my threshold by the end. I know for a fact that I could not hold that for 60 mins much less 3 hrs or less, yet. I definitely need to do some work.
On a positive. I rode again with the skin suit on for that session. After a little thought and tinkering with my balance on the bike, a much improved feel.
I’m really interested in the discussion over what IF level is best for 70.3. This is something that I haven’t considered before.
45f in my room with the trainer this morning and I couldn’t get motivated to start. But I went and ran 1.5miles at 19f in the dark tonight while my pizza was in the oven without hesitation… And I hate running.
Pizza was on the cards last night after a run for me too! I never thought this thread would teach me conversion tables fahrenheit to celsius. I’m happier running in the cold than the warm but I think with cycling there’s less moving, more wind and less bang for your buck.
Running in winter is fine when it’s properly cold and everything stays frozen. The truly miserable bits are at either end when everything keeps melting and refreezing, so you’re either running through frozen slush with numb feet or shuffling around on ice hoping you don’t bail and die alone in the cold.
Oh, and that thing where you come back into a heated house from a really cold run and your knees feel like they’re going to explode.
