Bad news is that my September race (Challenge Lisbon Olympic), which had already been postponed from March, was postponed again to next May. It was going to be my first triathlon. That sucks.
The good news is that Ironman 70.3 Portugal is still on, and my training is going great. Followin the 80/20 endurance lvl 2 plan, and really liking it.
I know this might not be what you are looking for but since I have started doing this over the last couple of months and has helped me a lot. I sub to this guy on youtube and has a bunch of helpful hints.
Sorry to hear that series of unfortunate events to close out an already beleaguered season!
Can you avoid air quality issues by doing it indoors (pool/trainer/treadmill)? Imperfect but I have found it satisfying when all else is off the table.
I watched my wife attempt 100mi on a treadmill last year. It looked absolutely terrible!!! Honestly, I’m getting excited to start lifting weight again and focus on CX and riding my mountain bike more often. This year I almost exclusively did the road bike. Next year I’m going to get back to XTERRA, I love those races!
I’ve watched a lot of his videos. I have considered trying one of his strength plans, but it looks like they require a lot of time. I already don’t have a ton of time fitting in swim/bike/run. I have been using Sufferfest for their strength plans since covid started and I feel like it has helped a lot.
Like I said, I’m pretty sure my back issue is from tearing my meniscus and limping around for a month before having surgery.
Cool. I don’t follow the plans but watch some of his tips. That one 30 sec exercise daily has really helped surprisingly and hardly feel any discomfort anymore.
Third (!) flight home just got cancelled along with my last hopes for a race season, and I’m honestly surprised that I’ve managed to string together a couple of my best training blocks ever given the first two times absolutely knocked me about mentally and along with a pretty gnarly iron deficiency took me a couple of months to come back from. More surprised given everything from heatwaves to stupid AQIs to mechanicals and the return of COVID restrictions- think I’ll put it down to a snowball effect of smaller successes (note to self: underrated), plus being so thoroughly over annoyed with the world that I’m just doing my own thing come hell or high water.
Haven’t done anything resembling a build in over a year or really worried too much about numbers, but in retrospect I’ve seen pretty big improvements in my pace/power vs. HR along with efforts above threshold being close to where they were at my peak last year, so I’m really excited to see where that goes. Also finally moving the needle on my swim times, praise the lord!
Uni is back next week and the lake is starting to get a bit nippy so keeping the momentum up is going to be the priority, particularly as my best fitness seems to come when I’m not overly concerned with fitness. Also managed to strip the tension bolt on my trainer because I’m a absolute caveman, so hopefully the replacement parts don’t take too long…
Congrats to everyone who had a productive last month, and best wishes to the people who had a rough one- usually means better times are coming!
I’d actually be interested in trying a treadmill ultra, I’m always down for weird challenges like that. Always shoot myself in the foot when it comes to running though- I usually gravitate to lower volumes in training, so my better judgement has to win out there.
August has been abit all over the place with training. Had a pretty solid few weeks of training strung together and feeling pretty good moving closer to weymouth in 2 weeks time. Would like to get a solid run off the bike at the 70.3.
My diet hasnt been great and all over the place really just been shovelling whatever is thrown at me. Will try and correct it for the last few weeks of training and then will take somewhat of an offseason going into the end of September and see what that brings.
7 weeks from my race…
swim feeling better than usual, so that good. Hope I dont panic!
After taking a mental break I am finally back at it.
Bike is feeling strong,
Running is MUCH slower than usual, but I am feeling the running fitness slowly getting back where I want it to be.
Been rocking about 10.5 - 11 hrs this last few weeks.
Race is 1/3 of IM distanca (.8 swim, 42 miles ride, 8 miles run)
I did the race in 4:26 in 2018 (after getting lost and adding about 1.3 extra miles on the bike and been 4th from last out of the water).
Hope to break this 4hrs this year with a better swim and not getting lost in the bike!
Oh… This is a race in Florida… Called Great Floridian Triathlon.
And you all may think… its florida and flat… a fast bike ride is a no brainer…
well…
The race is where ALL THE HILL in florida relocated…
2300 feet of elevation in 42 miles…
For perspective… Mt Tremblant has 4300 feet elevation gain…
This race has 6746 if you opt to do the full distance!
what goes up must come down… seriously though good luck. I was in Ft. Lauderdale for work a few weeks back and still hot there but still feels hotter in Atlanta. Cooling down a little now though which is nice.
Its doesnt cool down here till November at least.
every year it seems the “cooler” weather is less cool, takes longer to get here and doesnt stay for long…
That race had only been non wetsuit legal 4 times the last 30 year…
3 of them the last 5 years…
Just the bike. I add more low intensity running/swimming. I’ve followed it entirely in the past and it worked for me, i’ve just tailored it more to my needs at this point. See you in St. George?
