I have not done a full, I got in an accident 6 weeks before my first. But my plan was:
BTA
2 BTS
Do you have a storage over the bottom bracket in that picture for tube/levers/etc? Or do you have bosses on the top tube that can attach a bento box of some sort?
Each bottle had enough calories for 1hr. My plan was to have 3 replacement bottles at special needs. Toss the 2BTS, replace with fresh ones, top off my BTA. No need to mess with aid stations or worry about on course nutrition.
I would hate to have a cage or bottle of some sort on the frame in the triangle. That’s a huge aero penalty.
Any tips for bad weather in a full distance triathlon? I was meant to be doing IM Copenhagen this weekend but travel restrictions meant I couldn’t get there, pivoted to Dalesman (in Yorkshire) and the weather looks horrible. About 17°C (or 63°F) and straight rain all day, I’m currently not planning on bothering with a jacket or gloves… Is this stupid?
Yes (if you are talking about the bike)
Go with a light rain shell - it will make the bike much more comfortable - being comfortable during the bike is key IMO. otherwise it a long time to be miserable in the rain
Surely you don’t think this is cold?
Rain, I’d take gloves and a gillet but I’d expect to be hot unless there is gale force winds too.
Sorry @JoeX, realise I wasn’t clear at all. What I was getting at is potentially being too warm if I wear a jacket in that temperature but also whether I should still do something about getting completely soaked. I think the answer is extra chamois cream and bear it!
Ah, makes more sense. I just checked Yorkshire, thundery showers I’m an optimist so I probably would leave the gillet in T1. If it’s intermittent heavy blasts of rain then dry and warm, I’d ride as normal. But definitively take something so you have options in T1 as the forecast could change. Fresh socks for T2 with your shoes in a closed plastic bag, too.
I suppose if the thunder is early you might miss the swim…
Oh man…
Yeah, just cancelled our vrbo and flights. This is getting old….
February 5th, 2022 is the new date. Sad that these postponements are still happening at this point. What a mess.
I also feel bad for people who passed on their KQ’s due to travel restrictions this year when Ironman was saying you couldn’t defer, but then they started sending out deferral options for up to 2025? ahead of this announcement.
They didn’t officially send out deferral options before this announcement (or even with the announcement yet). The change in deferral options was rumored before the official cancellation/reschedule or whatever we are calling it this year. The details regarding official deferral options were promised by Ironman no later than August 25th.
Anyone racing Aberfeldy this weekend?
Same with 70.3 Worlds being moved to a single day. Female flight/hotel bookings completely thrown off. Just grateful that race is happening .
Not me but it’s one I fancy. I’m always back at work the week before it which kind of puts me off but I will do it one day. It’s fairly close to me
Good luck
Damn, really sorry to hear that- hope it works out for everyone.
Been trying to get back to Aus for a year now, and after 4 cancelled flights it doesn’t seem like it’s going to change anytime soon. At least there’s no races on the line for me, but I’m going to be so grumpy if I don’t make it back before winter hits
Done LCW mallorca. Good fun events, very different from an IM stand-alone event.
Although I was there with the aim of working on the bike for a pro friend to make sure he finished the bike In the front of the race. So I basically smashed the bike and then had the joy of a marathon on very battered legs.
I think they are road bikes (although wales used to be TT bikes I believe, which would be terrifying) and are basically a bike race as a result. Especially in the race I’ve done where it had standalone bike participants as well as ‘triathletes’.
Worth a go as something different. I would not say it’s good prep for an IM though.
Yeah, I watched LCW Wales a few months ago and they had different bibs for the people racing all three events, from the people doing single stages. Looked fun.
5-6 weeks before a race I try to do some outdoor rides to get my neck, shoulders, core, etc ready for race day. I did a ramp test Monday and FTP is now 225. This always worries me…85% of that says I should ride my next race at like 191w. My prior 70.3s have been averaging anywhere from 159-174w avg. 191 is way above anything I’ve done for a race. But…trust the data.
Today’s ride was 6x20’ race power and it was surprisingly manageable. I set my 2hr power record, and 1 and 2min power records (chasing a KOM at the END of my ride). Felt strong and definitely a confidence booster leading up to race day.
Question: does anyone have experience with putting on knee-high compression socks for the run? I know it’ll take some time in T2, but whenever I do a long run for training - without biking before it - I wear these and am contemplating now if it’s a good idea. Will try for myself soon, but N=1 experiences are always welcome!
I’ve worn calf sleeves for the entire race. I know not the same as the socks but very similar. I would imagine putting on compression socks would be difficult when tired and sweaty. I’d try the calf sleeves.
